Haha, thank you very much for being supportive of the change. I thought I might have over-stepped my implied wiki-social-contract bounderies. Also, thank you for the comments on my site. I'm not sure what you mean, but my Wordpress layout is totally original, not from a template. Thanks again, -- User:Ejfox

Have you considered joining this WikiProject? Judging by your userboxes, you're an Apple fan. Not like I'll be upset if you don't, but we'd all be honored to have you aboard. --HereToHelp (talk) 15:37, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your contributions to this article. However, in the future, please use the preview function and make your edits so that there aren't 15 diffs, etc. Thanx. - RevRagnarok 15:41, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Iranian Azerbaijan

[edit]

Hi Mac,

You should have merged the two pages the other way around. Iranian Azerbaijan is the correct term to refer to Southern Azerbaijan and that page has been around for years. The Azarbaijan page is new and incorrect, and can also refer to both the North and South. --Khoikhoi 21:36, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'm terribly sorry for the trouble I've caused you, and I thank you for informing me of my mis-merge

Mac, I am the original author, and I have been fighting a battle to keep this article on wiki for days now. I have essentially given up even though i believe i am in the right, and posted a go ahead and delete on the AfD page. As such, I merely blanked the page as a way to help the process along. No vandalism intended. Tokyojoe2002 13:47, 31 December 2005 (UTC)

An Esperanzial note

[edit]

As I remember, the last spam that was handed out was on the 20th of December last year, so I think it's time for another update. First and foremost, the new Advisory Council and Administrator General have been elected. They consist of myself as Admin General and FireFox, Titoxd, Flcelloguy and Karmafist as the Advisory Council. We as a group met formally for the first time on the 31st of Decembe. The minutes of this meeting can be found at WP:ESP/ACM. The next one is planned for tonight (Sunday 29 January) at 20:30 UTC and the agenda can be found at WP:ESP/ACM2.

In other news, Karmafist has set up a discussion about a new personal attack policy, which it can be found here. Other new pages include an introductory page on what to do when you sign up, So you've joined Esperanza... and a welcome template: {{EA-welcome}} (courtesy of Bratsche). Some of our old hands may like to make sure they do everything on the list as well ;) Additionally, the userpage award program proposal has become official is operational: see Wikipedia:Esperanza/User Page Award to nominate a userpage or volunteer as a judge. Also see the proposed programs page for many new proposals and old ones that need more discussion ;)

Other than that, I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and wish you an Esperanzially good new WikiYear :D Thank you! --Celestianpower háblame 16:57, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Another Esperanzial note...

[edit]

Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".

The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Due to the neutrality precident, I will not vote for anyone.

Yours, as ever, Esperanzially,

Journal graph

[edit]

A graph from a scientific journal is almost certainly not free and thus not suitable for the Commons. However, if you can make a fair use claim, you could upload it to the project you want to use it on directly. - Mgm|(talk) 09:48, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mac Davis, Please don't remove a cleanup notice without first cleaning up the article or leaving an explaination on the talk page. In my opinion, the Englewood article needs work. Phrases like "gone through the suffering from the Great Depression and racial discrimination" tripped that response. Looking at it again, I don't think I'll replace the tag, but parts of the article need an encyclopedic-tone cleanup. --Fang Aili 15:08, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey! Nice to meet another teenaged Wikipedian :) I joined May 2003, and I'm totally a Wikipediholic :P. Currently I go to Glenbard North High School, but I have hopes of getting into the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy starting next year. My fingers are crossed like you don't believe. I was in a gifted program from 5th-8th grade, and now I'm in a bunch of honors classes. How about you?Ilyanep (Talk) 22:05, 23 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I was in a gifted program from 6th-8th grade, and wow did I love it. I had all gifted classes, with only other gifted kids. But I moved to Guam, and I'm on a military base now. Unsurprisingly, the classes are not very high-level, and I am only in honors world history and honors world literature. I am into physics, especially nanophysics, and will go to the University of Central Florida for a bachelors degree in nanophysics. Uhm... what's up? -- User:Mac_Davis

Heh. I totally love honors classes and I would fall asleep in a non-honors class. I plan to double-major in Computer Science and Mathematics and minor in Music and hopefully I can get into MIT (I'm applying!) and then I'm going on to get a master's degree in Computer Science. Nothing really is up, I'm just bored (and happy) now that it's spring break.Ilyanep (Talk) 23:06, 24 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, it isn't spring break here yet. I like to play Halo. :) I am also extremely interested in lucid dreaming and sleep, since I am a natural, extremely frequent lucid dreamer. Its the weekend now! yeah! -- User:Mac_Davis

I haven't ever had a lucid dream and I've been quite interested in those :\Ilyanep (Talk) 02:24, 25 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What? No halo? Any PC games? I like the Age of Empires series and halo. I'm a total pirater now, and don't pay for anything. Haha, I'm trying to get Mathematica 5.2 right now. I love my TI-84. The TI-89 looks really cool too. I write my own 84 programs, its fun. What kinda books do you like to read? Do you get the Science Channel where you live? My dad was born in Illinois.

I don't own an X-Box, but I do play Halo 2 and CoD 2 when I get a chance. On my own computer, I play Battlefield 2 a lot as well as Medal of Honor:Allied Assault (an oldie but a goodie; I belong to a clan). I also like many rts games. I own a TI-84 for school and I've written a lot of programs that have to do with Geometry. I want to get a TI-89 soon because of the equasion solver [of course I wrote my own program that uses the quadratic formula :P]. I like to read science fiction books a lot. Currently, I'm actually reading The DaVinci Code, but that's just because the movie is coming out soon. I don't believe I get the Science channel where I live.Ilyanep (Talk) 16:22, 25 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, my mistake. I have an 83. I don't believe the 84 has an equasion solver though, because it's simply an upgrade of the 83. Maybe yours came preloaded with certain apps. I think it's fun to write my own programs for the 83 -- i just do it when bored. — Ilyanep (Talk) 00:24, 26 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #1

[edit]
Reach out is a program aimed at allowing users to bring issues that they have had in Wikipedia to a listening, sympathetic and caring audience:
"No one can know how we feel if we do not say. We cannot expect to get understanding if we do not ask for it. No one will dispute that sometimes life's issues are too much for one person. It is fair to say that sometimes Wikipedia's problems fall under the same heading. This is a place where you can bring the bruises that can sometimes be got on this project for attention."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Note from the editor
Welcome to this new format of the Esperanza Newsletter, which came about during the last Advisory Council meeting - we hope you like it! The major changes are that each month, right after the Council meeting, this will be sent out and will include two featured programs and a sum up of the meeting. Also, it will be signed by all of the Advisory Council members, not just Celestianpower. Have an Esperanzial end of March, everyone!
  1. Future meetings are to be held monthly, not fortnightly as before.
  2. Bans and Access level changes (apart from autovoice) in the IRC channel are to be reported at the new log.
  3. In the IRC channel, there is going to be only one bot at a time.
  4. The charter requires members to have 150 edits and 2 weeks editing. Why this is the case will be clarified.
  5. A new Code of Conduct will be drafted by JoanneB and proposed to the Esperanza community.
  6. The NPA reform idea is to be dropped officially.
  7. Charter ammendments are to be discussed in future, not voted on.
  8. The Advisory Council is not going to be proposed to be expanded by the Advisory Council themselves, if others want to propose it, they will listen.
Signed...

Hiya Mac Davis, and thanks for your note. Yeah I'm sorry to see the sunset losing too, and for what it's worth I think it would have been in with a good chance if it weren't for the existing FPs. Anyway don't be discouraged from posting another! The photo was a very good one by anyone's standards: but the competition at FPC is extremely stiff. Word association

[edit]

Thank you for your contributions to the Word Association games, but could you please follow the rules. Specifically, only add one word at a time to a game. For table games also only place words where the rules of the game say they can be added: For the fixed and radial games this is: in a direct line to the start word (horizonatally or veritically, not diagonally) or adjacent to two existing words. Also red links are not allowed in any game. I've removed the words you added that are not allowed. Thryduulf 13:19, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Halo

[edit]

Thanks a lot for helping on Halo articles and the template. Do you have a screenname? -- Mac Davis] ⌇☢ ญƛ. 04:59, 2 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I do have an AIM screen name; however, I'd rather not leave it in a publicly viewable space, because, as it is, I often get bombarded with IMs. Drop me an email (my email address is on record here) if you want it. As far as the Halo stuff goes, I try to do what I can to help out with whatever pages I come across. Incidentally, most of my interest in Halo comes from its use in machinima. I did see that you re-added the "Best gametype" stuff that I removed. I won't revert, as I'd rather discuss it first, but I'm kind of iffy about that, because it seems to me that "best" is a subjective term, and it's not really verifiable to say what is "best", because it's an opinion. However, if a reliable source — say, Bungie — noted that such-and-such a map is intended to be "best" for such-and-such a gametype, then we can cite that source, and include the information. But, even then, Wikipedia is not a video game guide, so we have to avoid going overboard with information that's only intended to help those who play the game. Anyway, we can discuss wehat's the best way to go with those map-related articles, and certainly thanks for dropping me a note. — TKD::Talk 11:15, 2 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I meant halo screenname silly! So I'll know you if I run across a game with you. I readded the gametypes before I noticed that you took them off in the page history. I wouldn't have, unless I didn't know. I know the List of multiplayer maps in Halo 2 has best gametype in it. Maybe we should just cut it out of all of them. Thanks, -- User:Mac_Davis
Yikes! I read on your user page that you have cerebral pulsy. How do you play halo with one hand? Do you use just the keyboard? How did you get it? What kind? How should I interact with disabledd people? lol, thanks. I love the internet! - Mac
Sorry for misinterpreting you. Yeah, I would say that deleting the "best" game types would be a good idea. I'm off to bed for a while, though, after I finish this message, so if you or someone else gets to it before I do, that's fine. I don't have a Halo screen name; unforunately, I have had very little time for gaming lately, between work, Wikipedia, and everything else that I do (and, trust me, I would like to find a nice two-hour block where I can just zap some Covenant :)).
As far as actually playing Halo goes, for me, I use both a gamepad and the keyboard, one in front of the other. Thumb controls looking/turning, index finger shoots, middle/ring fingers move/strafe/melee/a few otyher things, pinky jumps/crouches/reloads/switches weapons/etc. The hardest part for me is controlling four axes at once, since Halo is the first FPS for me where such is necessary.
Regarding cerebral palsy, I got it either during or shortly after birth, due to cerebral hemhorraging (the fact that I was born very prematurely probably was a factor). CP is interesting in that it can range from barely noticeable to quite severe (not being able to coordinate oneself even to walk). Some people (myself) don't mind talking about their condition; others are sensitive about it, so, unless you know that person, it's probably best not to bring it up first. Obviously, I don't mind at all, but, as I said, some people can take it the wrong way. — TKD::Talk 19:23, 2 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Mac,

Actually, my image for Balikpapan Wikipedia is an image of Bekapai Water Fountain, one of our landmark here in Balikpapan.

I posted there since I'd like to share with others whom like to know and learn about Balikpapan from wikipedia of the Great Landmark We had here (Bekapai Water Fountain).

However, if the image is not appropriate placed in Balikpapan Wikipedia. I wouldn't mind if it should be removed from there.

Thank you.

PS. I gave away the copy right for those image, since I want to share to others, as per I mentioned above. ANn please disregards my first posted comment in your guest book since I clearly write everything here.

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #2

[edit]
The Barnstar Brigade is a new program aimed at giving more very deserving yet unappreciated users barnstars. It will officially start on 2006-04-09, but signing up is encouraged before this date:
"Here in Wikipedia, there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go un-appreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go un-noticed. Sadly, these editors often leave the project. As Esperanzians, we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. A project the size of Wikipedia has thousands of editors, so there are plenty of people out there who deserve recognition, one just has to find them. The object of this program is not to flood editors with Barnstars, but to seek out people who deserve them, and make them feel appreciated."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Information
Welcome to the second issue of the new format Esperanza Newsletter - we hope you still like it! This week, it was delivered diligently by our new dogsbody. MiszaBot (run by Misza13): any execution complaints should go to him. Content comments should be directed at the Esperanza talkpage. Thanks!
  1. The next elections: Approval voting as before and, also as before, an previous leadership member can run. Please submit your name for voting in the relevant section of this page. Voting starts on 2006-04-23 and ends on 2006-04-30. There will be three places up for grabs as KnowledgeOfSelf is leaving Wikipedia. Please see the previously linked page for full details.
  2. The Code of Conduct is now ready for extensive discussion! Specific comments should go to the Code of Conduct talk page, discussion of having one at all should be directed to the main Esperanza talk page.
  3. The current process for accepting proposals for new programs has been deemed fine. All Advisory Council members and the Admin Gen are to endevour to be bold when viewing discussion. If they feel that consensus has been reached, they will act accordingly.
A plea from the editor...
The propsed programs page is terribly underused! Please leave any comments, good or bad, on the page, to help us determine the membership's thoughts on the ideas there.

Hi Mac,

You've answered my question regarding the Human brain. ("I’ve was told that researches were made about our brain’s function that found that when we see things and when we imagine things, the brain uses the same parts. Meaning that our brain cannot differ between what it sees to what it remembers/imagines. Can you please guide me to those researches?") and I wanted to thank you for that personally. Your reference proved to be very helpful - thank you. My name is Asaf (I'm a he). I'm a 35 years old mediator from Israel. The experience I’ve acquired in resolving conflicts and teaching people how to do so, have led me to writing a book about “self mediation” - using mediation tools in order to better cope with conflicts. Since conflicts involve (also) the way we "see" the world, I'm currently writing about the way our brain is working.

I'll appreciate it if, as you offered, you'll send me the article ("Picture This" by Thomas Grueter)

Thanks again,

Well, I'm not sure what you need from me or even if you still need it, but here goes nothing.

Dear National Honors Society,
My name is Chris Smith. I am a Wikipedia contributor from Fresno, California. Mac Davis asked me to certify that he is a "Wikipedian", as we like to call ourselves. I can certify that not only is he a contributor, but he is a major contributor! He has been responsible for over 1500 Wikipedia edits. He is an active member of and participant in the community. The community has sharpened him and he, in turn, has sharpened it.
Mac's contributions to Wikipedia demonstrate a level of sophistication beyond his years. He has developed opinions about topics with which most people his age have never been confronted. He has a mastery of subjects that most young people havn't even begun to comprehend. His is clearly a remarkable mind and I highly recommend him to your society.
Let me know if that works for you, Mac.

Hi Mac!
Sorry for taking a while to get back but tell me if this is OK...

I'm Fir0002, I contribute images to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. I've been contributing for a while and have enjoyed some sucess in that area. I first met Mac when he dropped a line on my talk page.

He is a prolific editor, especially for a relative newcomer. He performs the valuable and slightly unglamorous jobs of vandalism patrols and answering queries on the Reference Desk. He is certainly providing a valuable community service in these respects. He also contributes to articles and has uploaded some images. Overall he is a valuable user who is a pleasure to deal with.

Hope that is OK, if there is anything I've missed or that you think is wrong (even just spelling) don't hesitate to reply!

NHS Paragraph

[edit]

Do you still need that? Sorry I haven't been able to get around to it. I've got two half-days of school in which I'll have no homework so I'm pretty much free. How long do you need it? — Ilyanep (Talk) 01:20, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Removing images on your userpage

[edit]

Hi. Sorry to have intruded. Images that are under an unfree license cannot be used in userspace (see Wikipedia:Fair use for more details). Screenshots from video games aren't under an unfree license; their copyright is owned by the company that created the software, so we cannot decorate our userpages with them. Thanks for understanding, and let me know if you have any other questions. Jkelly 16:31, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

string antistates annihilate

[edit]

I don't think you're correct when you said that string antistates don't annihilate with the corresponding string states the way matter and antimatter do. They do annihilate. -lethe talk + 19:37, 28 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Kilt article inuse tag

[edit]

I wish you hadn't removed the "inuse" tag from the kilt article. A check with the page history would have revealed that the article was receiving several major edits each day and that this was ongoing.

The "articles undergoing active editing" category states:

This category is useful to help finding articles which have been tagged with these tags for too long and (emphasis mine) are not being actively edited.

Hopefully, the removal of the inuse tag won't cause any problems, but please be more patient. I expect to be only a couple more days (today and tomorrow) for the great bulk of the work.

CJ

[edit]
Community Justice is an organization that is trying to promote civility across the Wikipedia community. You could say that they share some goals with Esperanza. I recently got elected to serve on the council. The councillors serve on the council, which includes the councillors, the chief executive, and the chairman. From my understanding, we make the decisions around there. — Ilyanep (Talk) 11:50, 3 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please watch out with edit conflicts

[edit]

Your edit on Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Science a few minutes ago has removed two answers. One by 213.161.189.107 and one by me. - Dammit 10:34, 7 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #3

[edit]
The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service.
This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.
The Stressbusters are a subset of Esperanza aiming to investigate the causes of stress. New eyes on the situation are always welcome!
Note from the editor
As always, MiszaBot handled this delivery. Thank you! Also, congratulations go to Pschemp, Titoxd and Freakofnurture for being elected in the last elections! An Esperanzial May to all of the readership!

  4. Referendums are to be held on whether terms of AC members should be lengthened and whether we should abolish votes full stop.
