Quintet (stylized as QUINTET) is a 5-on-5, winner stays on, Japanese grappling promotion created by mixed martial arts legend Kazushi Sakuraba. Quintet is broadcast on UFC Fight Pass.[1] Sakuraba developed Quintet with friend and former UFC champion Josh Barnett. In July 2017, Sakuraba visited Las Vegas to attend the ceremony honoring his induction into the UFC Hall of Fame. While in Las Vegas, Sakuraba pitched the concept of Quintet to Ant Evans, the content officer for UFC Fight Pass. Evans loved the idea and worked with Sakuraba to further develop the concept before ultimately signing Quintet to a long-term deal with UFC Fight Pass.[2]
Rules
Fight Mat
12m x 12m square wrestling mat. No line boundaries. In case of obvious risk of falling out of the mat area, the referee stops the bout, and the bout is restarted in a safe area in the same position.[3]
Winner Stays On System
After two members from opposing teams grapple each other, the winner fights the next fighter from the opposing team. A draw results in both fighters being removed. If the last fighter on the team loses, that team loses.[3] In the case that both teams are down to their last fighter and the match results in a draw, the winning team is determined by whichever team has the fewest cumulative penalties throughout all the matches. If both teams have an equal number of penalties, the referees judge who was the more aggressive fighter in the final match and their team is declared the winners.
Weight
Total weight of the team (five fighters) must be under the weight class limit one day prior to the event.[3]
Class name | Weight class limit (kg) | |||
---|---|---|---|---|
Men | Women | |||
Regular | 430 kg | 280 kg | ||
Light | 360 kg | — |
Time Limits
The match consists of one 8-minute round if the grapplers are close in weight. If there is a significant weight difference the lighter fighter is allowed to choose between an 8- or 4-minute round. This occurs in the Regular weight class when the difference is 20+ kg and occurs in the Lightweight class at 10+ kg.[3]
