Emmerdale is a British soap opera, set in the heart of the beautiful Yorkshire Dales, this realistic down-to-earth drama superbly chronicles the joys and the heartbreaks of a tightly-knit countryside community. The show airs on ITV and entered its 48th broadcast year on 1 January 2019 with episode number 8353. Kate Brooks and Laura Shaw continued their roles as producers, with Jane Hudson continuing her role as executive producer. In the typical week, Emmerdale airs six half-hour episodes in a time slot of 7:00 pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesday and Fridays, and 8:00 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Storylines in 2019 include the return of Mandy Dingle (Lisa Riley), and the revelation that Paddy Kirk's (Dominic Brunt) father isn't who he thought he was, he was in fact a completely different individual who goes by the name of Bear Wolf (Dean Andrews), following an affair his mother had when she was married too his father. It also saw Lachlan White (Thomas Atkinson) still trying to create his dirty deeds from the inside of his prison cell with the help of his father, which led to the events of his father trying to burn down The Woolpack, and stabbing Vanessa Woodfield in the process. Graham Foster (Andrew Scarborough) made Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) believe that he was responsible for killing his daughters, Debbie Dingle (Charley Webb), husband-to-be Joseph Tate (Ned Porteous), however the truth finally unravelled that he never. Bob Hope (Tony Audenshaw) was brought to the subject of homelessness and was admitted to hospital after suffering from hypothermia. The brothers Billy Fletcher (Jay Kontzle) and Ellis Chapman (Asan N'Jie) apoplectic feud. The most significant storyline of the year so far, was the grooming abuse of Jacob Gallagher (Joe-Warren Plant) by his teacher Maya Stepney (Louisa Clein).

New regular cast members introduced in 2019 included Joshua Richards (Bear Wolf) and Dean Andrews (Will Taylor). Departing regular cast in 2019 included Jordon (Daz Spencer) and Atkinson (Lachlan White). Returning cast included Natalie Ann Jamieson as Amy Wyatt and Alexander Lincoln as Jamie Tate. Guest stints for former cast members included Lisa Riley (Mandy Dingle) and Jane Cox (Lisa Dingle).

Cast and characters

On 13 November 2018, actress Lisa Riley announced that she would be reprising her role as Mandy Dingle in Emmerdale after over a seventeen year absence from the show, and returned on 4 January 2019 for several episodes with her son Vinny in tow. Mark Jordon gave up his role as Daz Spencer and was written out of the series on 31 January 2019. The character of Amy Wyatt was recasted with actress Natalie Ann Jamieson now portraying the character, previously being Chelsea Halfpenny. Jane Cox decided to give up her role as Lisa Dingle after playing the character for twenty-three years. Claire King returned to the role of Kim Tate having previously appeared in the previous year for a short stint, but now became a regular cast member. Dawn Taylor's father was introduced to the serial played by Dean Andrews and playing the character Will Taylor. Jamie Tate also returned to the serial after last being seen in the show in 1999 as an infant character, now the character is played by Alexander Lincoln and is much more mature.

In the typical week, Emmerdale airs six half-hour episodes in a time slot of 8:00 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 7:00 pm Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, with the reoccurrence of two episodes being aired on Tuesdays. A subdued Matty avoids the up-beat Dingles before slamming out of the house. Moira and Cain are worried about what's happened. Charity probes Ryan as to his whereabouts the previous night. She's annoyed to find out Dawn is the cause of the problems again. Frustrated Billy snaps at April. Jessie is worried about her son as he stalks out. Concerned Harriet tries her hardest to get through to Dawn. Rhona offers to speak to Pearl about their living situation. Paranoid Matty is on the defensive when Cain startles him. Billy is frustrated as Ellis rejects his brotherly advice. Bernice is feeling fragile about her age. Her interest is piqued when Kerry mentions botox. Ryan explains what happened when himself and Harriet went in search of Dawn. Charity warns him to stay away from Dawn, he's left troubled- unable to do that. Matty confides in Cain. Cain implores him to tell Moira, but Matty is determined to handle things himself. Harriet's relieved to see Dawn returning to the village. Pained Harriet begs for Dawn to follow her to the church so she can show her something. Moira attempts to win Matty his job back. Matty is furious to see his mum fighting his battles again. Needing the help, Charity agrees to give him his job back. Jai desperately tries to find a delivery driver. Billy is dejected when Jai turns his offer down. Mortified Cain accidentally spills the beans on Matty's secret. Guilty Harriet shows Dawn her box of memories. Moira confronts Matty about his run in with Isaac. Embarrassed Matty flees the pub, leaving Moira even more worried. Dawn is desperate to keep up her hard exterior as Harriet tries to make amends for what she did. Jai's aware he's running out of time and this may be his only option. Dark Cain finds out who Isaac is and where he hangs out from Victoria. Cain exits- seeking Matty's revenge.

Harriet feels like she's making progress with Dawn as she offers to buy her a drink. Victoria informs Matty that Cain's gone out looking for Isaac. Matty is left feeling like things can only get worse. Cain watches the pub, waiting for Isaac to arrive. Bernice is left feeling insecure as Liam tends to an injured Priya. Grateful Dawn thanks Ryan for his help the day before. They exit the pub leaving Charity concerned he's getting in too deep. Cain confronts Isaac and goes to beat him. He's stopped by memories of Joe. Confused and panicking Cain flees to his car. Jai arrives at Tall Trees and offers Billy a job. Proud Jessie congratulates him on his new office job, Billy doesn't have the heart to tell her otherwise. Cain is paralysed with fear as Isaac and his friends circle him. Ryan is still fuming about how Dawn has been treated. Dawn is relieved to have someone like Ryan. It's clear that affection is growing. Charity's concerns about Dawn grow. Matty tells Moira that Cain's gone out searching for Isaac. When Debbie asks his where abouts they exchange a worried look. Cain is being beaten to within an inch of his life outside the pub. Flirty Priya continues to torment Bernice as Liam massages her ankle. Her anxiety grows as she sees the other women doting over her man. Affectionate Dawn kisses Ryan goodbye, Vanessa observing worries how Charity might react if she knew. Moira is becoming increasingly more concerned as she tries to get hold of Cain. Struggling Cain manages to get himself into his car. Battered, bloody and bruised.

Cagey Bernice tries to hide a package from Kerry and Liam. When she leaves to start her new fitness regime, suspicious Kerry investigates her order. Moira is beside herself when she can't get hold of Cain. Concerned Matty asks where he is but Moira covers, privately worried sick. Doting Jessie prepares Billy for his first day at work. Billy is left feeling guilty as he knows he's hiding the truth about his job from his mum. Diane and Gabby are amused to see Bernice attempting to exercise. Bernice is filled with jealousy as Liam tends to Priya's poorly ankle. Harriet is impressed when Dawn reveals she's heading out to an NA meeting. Charity pressures Vanessa to spill what she knows about Ryan and Dawn's relationship. Bernice is fed up with Priya taking Liam's attention. Kerry produces the Botox and Bernice makes a grab for it. Leanna enters to see the Botox box, leaving Bernice feeling humiliated. Worried Moira is about to head out and search for Cain. Debbie is shocked as Cain virtually falls through the door, bloodied and bruised. Bernice loses confidence as Leanna and Kerry scrutinise her looks. Bernice is nervous as she decides to undergo the Botox. Cain is wounded as Moira and Debbie demand answers. Matty arrives and is furious at Cain for getting involved. Kerry starts to inject Bernice with the Botox as Leanna takes a morbid interest. Panic sets in when they realise Bernice is having a reaction to the toxins. Debbie questions Matty why he can't fight his own battles- Moira is trying to hide her concern over what Cain may have done. Billy is awkward as notices the workers in the factory whispering about him. Lydia and Laurel exchange a knowing look that it's difficult with Billy being there. Bernice is rushed into A&E. Kerry and Leanna feel useless as she's whisked away. Crying, Leanna answers the phone to Liam. Frosty Charity confronts Ryan over his relationship with Dawn. Panicked Nicola tells Jimmy they need to get to hospital ASAP. A Doctor explains to Kerry and Leanna that Bernice has suffered an allergic reaction. Liam arrives and is furious at Kerry's stupidity. Downbeat Billy comes clean to Jessie about his first shift at the factory. Charity and Vanessa discuss Dawn's intentions and its clear Charity has her mind made up. Broken Cain is interrogated by Moira. He's emotional as he reveals he couldn't hit Isaac. Cain is left feeling emasculated as Moira tries to comfort him. Bernice's family arrive as the Doctor explains her condition. They're all in shock when she reveals Bernice's face could be permanently paralysed.

Irritated Charity warns Dawn not to take Ryan for a mug. Leaving Dawn rattled. Worried Nicola, Rodney and Gabby look at Bernice in intensive care. Liam and Leanna arrive to visit but Leanna is left guilt ridden when Gabby lays blame. Victoria is shocked to see Cain's injuries at the hands of Isaac. She encourages Matty to report him to the police. Ryan is delighted when Dawn agrees to go on a date with him. Everybody waits for Bernice to regain consciousness. When Kerry arrives, she reveals that Leanna encouraged Bernice into using the Botox and Diane has to restrain a seething Gabby Ryan tells Vanessa, Charity and Debbie about his date with Dawn. When Debbie reveals her past encounters with Dawn it's clear that Charity wants to put a stop to their relationship ASAP. Desperate Leanna tries to justify her actions as the group quiz her. Everyone is relieved when Bernice regains consciousness Dawn is left feeling conflicted and vulnerable as Charity hands her a wad of cash to leave Ryan alone. Paddy and Chas return from their holidays. Nervous Aaron braces himself to tell Chas about Billy arriving in the village. Concerned Victoria tries to convince Matty to report Isaac to the police. As Matty heads out, its clear Victoria's words have struck a chord. Harriet is left feeling devastated as a fragile and tearful Dawn flees the house. Bernice is relieved to find out she hasn't suffered any permanent physical damage. But she may have lost the man of her dreams. Ryan nervously waits for Dawn to arrive. Harriet is torn when Ryan asks if she knows where Dawn is. It's clear from Charity's awkwardness she's behind her leaving Nicola is surprised to see Leanna still at the hospital watching Bernice. When Nicola offers her some advice, Leanna is left unreadable. Anxious Cain confides in Moira as to why he won't report Isaac. Matty announces that he's reported Isaac, oblivious to Cain and Moira's fears. Chas is fuming about Billy being in the village. Paddy and Aaron share a troubled look when Chas heads off to sort him out. Ryan's frustrated as guilty Charity tries to make her excuses for exiling Dawn. As Ryan and Harriet probe her, she refuses to acknowledge she's done anything wrong. Fragile Dawn breaks into the Cricket Pavilion - once inside she produces a bag of heroin.

Unconscious Dawn lies on the Cricket Pavilion floor. Panicked Cain argues with Matty about reporting Isaac. Cain must remain tight-lipped when PC Swirling arrives. Ryan, Harriet and Vanessa struggle to understand Charity's actions. As they head out to find Dawn- Charity's left feeling she's done the wrong thing. Fragile and embarrassed Bernice is out of intensive care as Leanna joins her. Sceptical Bernice accepts some chocolates from an apologetic Leanna. A seething Chas bursts into the house to throw Billy out of the village. There's a stand-off between her and Jessie, but Chas is determined to hold her ground. Concerned Moira is helpless as she watches Cain being questioned by PC Swirling. Matty reveals that he was the one who called the police, and relays his incident with Isaac. Rishi investigates the damage to the Cricket Pavilion. Upon entering, he finds an unconscious Dawn on the ground and calls an ambulance. Paddy's caught in the middle as Chas and Jessie argue over Billy, whilst Marlon tries to broker a peace. Marlon is gutted when Chas refuses to be witnesses at their wedding. Leanna opens up to Bernice about her Mum's death. Bernice is chuffed that there's a thawing between them. PC Swirling finishes taking Matty's statement. Cain feels like a coward in light of Matty's bravery- Moira's concerned about the toll this is taking on Cain Everyone's out looking for Dawn when they hear an ambulance siren. Rishi reveals that he found Dawn having overdosed. Charity is left reeling at the fact she may have killed Dawn Liam is thrown to see Leanna and Bernice bonding. Bernice is overwhelmed when Liam tells her he loves her. Dawn lies unconscious in a hospital room, hooked up to machines. Guilty Harriet watches over her. Matty is feeling empowered as he tells Victoria about reporting Isaac to the police. When Ellis joins them, Matty asks for some personal training sessions, to Victoria's concern. Charity, Ryan and Vanessa anxiously await news on Dawns condition. Charity attempts to defend herself. Harriet readies herself to confess all about how she knows Dawn. Chas is still fuming as she rants to Moira, conflicted Paddy keeps quiet. Moira covers for Cain's absence. When Paddy and Chas leaves, Moira attempts to comfort a beaten Cain. Charity, Vanessa and Ryan are shocked as Harriet painfully reveals her role in Dawn's life. Ryan's relieved when a Doctor tells him Dawn's requested him. Ellis, Jacob and Matty do a workout in the Village Hall. Flustered Matty is embarrassed when Jacob notices his bindings. Ryan and Harriet speak to a groggy Dawn. Charity arrives to apologise but is heart-broken when Ryan throws her out.
