Back to Gettysburg

The National Park Service changed the URL for nearly every one of its battlefield monument pages. So I went thru all 1,162 pages, and fixed the links to the Wiki monument list. I was planning to stop at 300 for today, but it turns out about half of the NPS pages are for buildings & structures or informational placards, not monuments. Interesting, to revisit the list a couple years after. And watching the news would only raise my blood pressure. Hope you're well. Best, == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 03:43, 20 January 2017 (UTC)

Those swine! probably something that needed to be done to their way of thinking and since the NPS is probably about to lose 9 tenths of its funding on Monday they probably decided to do it now. You on the other hand have no funding so are once again going beyond the call of duty. I am better in that i did get a new (2008) car. The good news is that I did locate a car driven by a little old lady since 2008, under 50,000 miles on it, with all new belts (including timing) hoses, tires, wipers, the works, so I am happy about that. After taking Gabe to the dog park on a rainy day I managed to mess the car up in one day more than she did in 8 years, but this is no surprise to those who know me. I am also going to try and get to the March in downtown Phoenix on Saturday, see if I still have what it takes to take to the streets. That should be, hopefully, uneventful. Et tu?

I would normally watch an inauguration, no matter what. But I was surprised at how much anger I felt watching only a bit of last night's ceremonies. I think the TV will remain off for the day.

NPS seems to have been revising the Gettysburg part of its website over the past couple years. Unless I made mistakes, the links should now all work.

March Madness 2017

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

• tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
• updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
• creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

Peace Corps Director

Hi Carptrash. I saw that you were active on the Peace Corps Talk page and have edited a few BLPs. I was hoping you might have a minute to take a look here regarding the article on a Peace Corps director, whose page is woefully less filled-out than all the other Peace Corp Director pages. I think MzMcBride already integrated about half of the draft content I had proposed, but said they ran out of energy and it's tough to compare the current article to the proposed draft. If you're willing to review the rest of the content, I can work on putting it in a Track Changes-type format so it is easy to see what I am proposing to be added. As an editor with a conflict of interest, Wikipedia's rules are that I am not suppose to edit any Wikipedia pages on people/companies I am affiliated with, but rather I must propose edits that may be approved/rejected by disinterested, crowd-sourced volunteers. On the one hand, you have articles like this where the article-subject and those affiliated are the most likely to spend the time/resources improving the page. On the other, the article-subject is motivated to write flowery puff pieces about how great they are (philanthropy, awards, etc.), whereas other editors presumably have more pure intentions (sometimes). The compromise the Wikipedia community has made is that someone in my position that is paid for their work may draft content, but must submit it to editors like you for approval.

Most of the 55 some-odd "Good Article"-ranked pages on my user page I was hired to write and were approved by someone else before they were put into article-space. In toher wrods, because my client's interest to look good on the Web may conflict with Wikipedia's interest to present neutral content (sometimes more substantially than in the case of a Peace Corps guy), I must avoid the appearance of impropriety (of using Wikipedia for my benefit, but to the public's/Wikipedia's detriment) by going through this process. Some editors don't like it, because it's basically ghost editing for someone else, and you don't have to do anything you don't want to. But I am suppose to go around begging someone to make the edits for me ;-) CorporateM (Talk) 22:57, 25 May 2017 (UTC)

Armstrong

Are you serious with your edits claiming Louis Armstrong as a clarinet player? The source you give at [1] seems highly dubious since neither of the records mentioned has either a clarinet nor a cornet on them (easy to find online). @Albabe: I am not concerned what any other editor might think of your works long as you follow a few basic guidelines, mostly involving references. We can probably even figure out how to fit some boots in. So I am going to start it slowly and probably continue even slower. Which is how I do these things. When I try and build a huge structure on my computer it pretty much always turns into something really ugly on line (could have to do with my 2004 software. So, let the games begin. List of suicides

Hi, Carptrash. I reverted your edit to List of suicides because it was not accompanied by a citation of a reliable source. List articles require citations of secondary sources, just as individual bio articles do, especially with a contentious topic like suicide, as was decided in a discussion on that article's talk page. Many thanks. Yes, The Nation cite you added is indeed a reliable source, and I added the publication info to it.

For future reference (no pun intended), one Wikipedia article cannot be cited as a source in another, as that is circular sourcing, which is prohibited by WP:CIRCULAR. One of the problems with circular sourcing (among others) is that many editors, when doing this, assume that the parent article contains citations that support the claim. But when this matter came up on the talk page in 2009, I decided to go through all those listed under "A" to see this, and I found ten whose parent articles did not support the suicide with a citation. This is why WP:CIRCULAR states, "Confirm that these sources support the content, then use them directly."

@Nightscream: When I do site wikipedia I typically try to include the reference that got the original section in wikipedia. I did NOT do that with Webb. I aded him because I had just watched a movie about him and got excited. Not only should we not edit while drunk, but probably not when we are excited either. Confederate monument stubs + question

I reverted your addition of the unsourced inscription. It looks a lot like original research to me-- as in someone copied it down. I believe that whom ever added the inscription copied it from the Smithsonian data base. I will look at the formatting and have added a reference. Why don't you register as a user? Department of Labor Building

Sorry for the confusion. The Department of Labor Building--that is, the original building at 1301 Constitution Ave., completed in 1934--was renamed the WJ Clinton Building in 2013 by an act of Congress. From the article:

In 2013 Congress designated the William Jefferson Clinton Federal Building as a complex including the EPA West Building, along with two adjacent buildings which were formerly known as the Interstate Commerce Commission Building (and subsequently designated as "EPA East") and the Ariel Rios Federal Building.

Unfortunately the current article at William Jefferson Clinton Federal Building does not currently explain that the 2013 act renamed 3 separate buildings under one name. I may just copy the above text into the latter article.

The chronology for the old DOL building is:

1. Building opened in 1934; DOL was the first occupant.
2. DOL vacated in 1979. The US Customs Service was the next occupant. (DOL moved to its new HQ at 200 Constitution Ave., later named the Frances Perkins Building.)
3. Customs vacated in the 1990s. After a renovation, EPA moved there in 2002. (Customs moved to the new Ronald Reagan Building on 14th St.)
4. After EPA moved in, GSA named the building "EPA West" but this was not formally named as such by Congress.

I have yet to find an online reference which provides a comprehensive description of the renaming of the three buildings under one name in 2013. GSA has not completely updated its online building inventory website, so that source is somewhat confusing. The GSA "Find a Building" page is at https://www.gsa.gov/portal/ext/html/site/hb/category/25431/hostUri/portal and provides some of the relevant info under the entry for "Environmental Protection Agency, West Building, Washington, DC." Maybe the actual language from Congress would be a useful reference, if it's available online.

As of 2013, GSA and EPA have refered to the components in the EPA complex as follows:

• Ariel Rios North --> William J. Clinton North
• Ariel Rios South --> William J. Clinton South
• Interstate Commerce Commission / EPA East --> William J. Clinton East
• Dept. of Labor / EPA West --> William J. Clinton West

Not sure if due to that page just really busy, my mobile net acting up, or related to my new account. Referencing for World's Columbian Exposition

Hi, Carptrash, I noticed your question about referencing at the Help Desk. I'm just another contributing editor, not from the help desk.

I went through exactly the same problem as you describe, until I discovered the 'Short footnotes using {{sfn}}' method, in conjunction with {{cite book}} and the {{harv}} library cataloguing system. This method is described in the Help:References and page numbers page which John of Reading posted. I think you just need to add |ref=harv to all the {{cite book}}s on the page, and you can reference them (with different page numbers) with the 'Short footnotes using {{sfn}}' method. This is just one of various ways of achieving the same effect.

The various Wikipedia documentation pages explain everything fairly well. I've also been putting my own page together at User:MinorProphet/The joy of sfn for a while. It is a work in progress and not finished, and doesn't claim to be a proper Wikipedia how-to page, but it might clarify some things which took me a while to work out. Good luck. Just for the record

Nobody has accused you of being racist or of defending the CSA or being a Lost Causer. There was a disagreement between us about the graph. Initially it was civil and polite and I thought you had some interesting things to say. Then D.Creish showed up and dumped a can of gasoline over it and lit a fire. Then our conversation got a bit more adversarial, which is too bad but that's what happens with users like these. From my perspective it looks like you're picking up some bad habits from him and from other sketchy accounts that have popped up in that discussion. I saw that somewhere else you said that sometimes you don't agree with sources but you still try to follow WP:RS and WP:NOR because that's the policy o the site. Arghghghg. I address that specifically above (which was my posting) . The tactic here is: "If a given source does not mention the SPLC report then argue that it is irrelevant and WP:SYNTH" and "If a given source does mention the SPLC report then argue that it's just the same as the SPLC report and is parroting it hence it doesn't count as a source" The purpose of this tactic is to exclude ANY source which makes the claim that there's a correlation between Jim Crow era and monument building. It's dishonest. It's bullshit. It's disruptive chicanery. It's circular reasoning. It's illogical. Another editor wrote

Here is a link [[2]] to some pages I've posted in an attempt to salvage "the graph" by changing the Jim Crow Era to Lost Cause. These are various discussions about the monuments themselves - which I believe are being largely ignored in this process. They ofter speak about "the cause" with or without a capitol C, they address the issue of no money following the war and more. Where they came from doesn't really matter, but I do have that info. I am looking for Edith Pope, not so much monuments. At what point do they (CV) admit she is the editor? They had a big Cunningham memorial issue Jan 1914 but are still listing him as the editor in February. Also interesting "philosophical" stuff about negroes, drakes and even the other N word. They are all there. There are lots of monuments listed but I am not doing CSA monuments as long as that ill-advised, misleading graph sits atop the page. I ran across this SPLC "call to arms" letter, which I think underlines their distinct POV as a source, as some of the Harper's and other articles have accused them of alarmist rhetoric, which this certainly is. What's appropriately discussed is whether streets named after Confederate leaders, soldiers, politicians, etc. merit inclusion on this particular List of Confederate monuments and memorials. I am going to struggle - and need opinions -as to how to proceed after the 300 UDC monuments are entered. Whether to include other organizations or not. I'd like to do that but the name should reflect that. As you know that article that these should go in will not allow them in because . ...well you know why, hence this format. Well I tend to be an inclusionist, but these are difficult times for every one. What will seem important a decade from now is tough to know, impossible really, so we just do the best we can. As you know I am NOT an inclusionist with a lot of the stuff at CSA monuments & memorials because it is supposed to be a list. look at List of statues of Stalin - Lenin has one too. No one there feels a need to have two pages of text explaining what creeps they were. etc. I digress. What is your new category, though, I did not notice it. Do you think we should add "Confederate heritage (remembrance?)" to the first paragraph of the lede of Nashville, Tennessee? To the lede of the aforementioned article, so-called Nowville (unless you're black and/or poor apparently). But you're making a good point. We should probably add it to many ledes. Natchez, Mississippi does mention the antebellum era but many people visit it for its 'historic' (translation:slave-built) mansions, and that should probably appear in the lede. It seems revisionist to leave it out, doesn't it? Wikipedia shouldn't be taking a Lost Cause approach to content.Zigzig20s (talk) 18:19, 31 October 2017 (UTC)

I have enough fights on my hands without taking on the entire South. My feeling is that they should have been allowed to quit the Union in 1861, the 10th Amendment reads, "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people." and there is nothing in the Constitution prohibiting states from leaving. I also believe that it is not too late and those 13 states, and anyone else who wants to should be evicted from the USA. Now. But probably every southern history article should include something. My one issue, at least that I will get into here, is that a lot of this finger pointing is the North's way to cover up its own racism. Yes it does. It looks like most of the original campus buildings burned down multiple times. They have a replica of columns which burned down in 1910 (at 2min), but before that there was Hamilton's house which burned down in 1895, and the article also mentions a 1927 fire. @BoringHistoryGuy: This is not so much funny "ha ha" as funny "strange", but I scanned that same monument on Sept 30, 2017 working on a Signing the Treaty article that I guess I never finished. I have a lot of those. Your version is a better scan. I will use it when I finish the article. Which will be when I am out of bed for more than an hour at a time. The signing the treaty is the large bas relief at the bottom that shows up in at least two places later on. Mon I thought I'd finished and published that article. List of United Daughters of the Confederacy chapters

Hello. Are you interested in working on a List of United Daughters of the Confederacy chapters please? @Zigzig20s: I just found this, I went in the hospital on Monday morning and got out an hour ago. Here is what i can contribute. You set up the list (chart?) send me a blue link and then as I add CSA monuments to the UDC monument article and discover chapters I will add them on. I am not sure how much editing I am going to be doing, for sure not a lot of sitting down in any case (don't ask unless you mean it). How does that sound? Stuff (opinion) is only original research if you come up with it on your own. If you "research" it from sources that you can list it is not OR. I am assuming that UDC is still an active organization, I'd email them. But I would include a prototype chart that includes the fields that you think should be included, see what they have to say. To me this sounds like piece work. Which is to say, one at a time. What I would do, and it is not how a lot of editors approach things, is that I would start a chart with one or two chapters. Get your fields in order and that sort of thing. Then just start adding to it as chapters are discovered. I believe (and this more "art" than "science") that there will turn out to be hundreds of chapters. I'd set up the chart like the List of monuments erected by the United Daughters of the Confederacy, by state and then alphabetically by town on county (not quite sure how these are done) and then just start plugging them in.
