Kick is a livestreaming platform that was announced on December 6, 2022 by Twitch streamer Tyler “Trainwreckstv” Niknam. He joined Kick as a non-owner advisor and non-exclusive streamer. Kick aims to offer better features and benefits for streamers and viewers than Twitch, such as a higher revenue share, a more transparent moderation system, and more creative freedom.

History

Kick officially entered beta mode on December 3, 2022 and launched its mobile app on March 3, 2023. The platform claims to have an “innovative new exclusive creator program” where partners can get a steady income based on their viewership metrics and engagement levels. Kick also promises to provide more support and resources for smaller streamers and communities.

Some of the notable streamers who have joined Kick include Trainwreckstv, xQcOW, HasanAbi, Ludwig, Pokimane, TimTheTatman, DrLupo, Nickmercs, Shroud, Ninja, Valkyrae, Sykkuno and Corpse Husband. Kick has also partnered with several esports organizations such as Cloud9, Team Liquid, FaZe Clan and 100 Thieves.

Features

Kick offers several features that aim to enhance the livestreaming experience for both streamers and viewers. Some of these features are:

  • A 95/5 revenue split for subscriptions and donations, meaning that streamers get to keep 95% of their earnings while Kick takes only 5%.[1][2]
  • A moderation system that allows streamers to set their own rules and guidelines for their channels and communities.[3]
  • A content discovery algorithm that recommends streams based on the viewer’s preferences and interests.
  • A chat system that supports emotes, stickers, gifs and polls.
  • A loyalty program that rewards viewers with points and badges for watching streams and engaging with chat.[4]
  • A referral program that gives bonuses to streamers and viewers who invite others to join Kick.

Reception

Kick has received positive feedback from many streamers and viewers who praised its user interface design, its chat features such as emotes and stickers, its content discovery algorithm, and its community guidelines that promote diversity and inclusion. However, Kick has also faced some challenges such as technical issues, legal disputes with Twitch over exclusivity contracts, and competition from other streaming platforms such as YouTube Gaming, Facebook Gaming and Trovo.
