Barbara Piévic (born 10 April 1993), known professionally as Barbara Pravi, is a French singer, songwriter and actress. After signing with Capitol Music France in 2015, she released five extended plays with the label. As a songwriter, Pravi has written songs for a number of artists including Yannick Noah, Julie Zenatti, Chimène Badi, and Jaden Smith. Her debut album, On n'enferme pas les oiseaux was released on 27 August 2021.

Pravi represented France in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 with the song "Voilà", securing 2nd place, the best result for France since 1991.[1] She additionally composed "J'imagine" by Valentina, which won the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2020, and "Oh maman!" by Lissandro, which won the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2022.

Early life

Barbara Piévic[2] (Serbian Cyrillic: Пјевић, romanizedPjević) was born in Paris on 10 April 1993.[3] Her family consists primarily of artists and musicians, being surrounded by paintings and music since childhood. Pravi's father is of Serbian and Algerian Jewish descent, while her mother is of Polish Jewish and Iranian origin.[4] Pravi's maternal grandfather is the Iranian painter Hossein Zenderoudi.[3][1]

Career

2014–2018: Early career

Pravi began her music career in 2014, after meeting French musician Jules Jaconelli. With Jaconelli, she began composing songs. The following year, she released an original song titled "Amour Impoli",[5] which led to her signing a contract with Capitol Music France. She adopted the stage name Barbara Pravi from the Serbian word pravi (Serbian Cyrillic: прави, lit.'real', 'authentic', in the masculine), as a homage to her Serbian grandfather.[6] Pravi has cited her musical influences as Barbara, Jacques Brel, Georges Brassens, Françoise Hardy, and Aragon.[7] Upon beginning her professional recording career, Pravi performed on the soundtrack of the French version of the Swiss film Heidi with the song "On m'appelle Heidi" and afterwards was cast as Solange Duhamel in the musical show Un été 44 [fr] in November 2016, performing songs written by Jean-Jacques Goldman, Charles Aznavour and Maxime Le Forestier.[8][9]

In 2017, Pravi released her first official single "Pas grandir".[10] The single was later included on her self-titled debut extended play, which was released the following year. Also in 2017, Pravi starred in the television film La Sainte famille, as the role of Marion,[11] was later broadcast on France 2 in December 2019.[12] From 2017 until 2018, Pravi performed on the 55 Tour, supporting French singer Florent Pagny.[13] At the end of 2018, Pravi decided to alter her musical style by adopting a more traditional French chanson style, rather than the pop music that had dominated her early releases.[14]

Along with writing and composing her own songs, Pravi has written for several other artists including Yannick Noah,[15] Julie Zenatti,[16] Chimène Badi,[17] Jaden Smith,[12] Louane and Florent Pagny.[18]

2019–2021: Eurovision participations

In 2019, Barbara Pravi wrote the song "Bim bam toi" with Igit, with which the performer Carla Lazzari represented France at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2019 in Gliwice and finally placed fifth. After the contest, this song went viral and received the TikTok disc with a song from France for the first time. In 2020, Pravi wrote the song "J'imagine" with Igit, with which the performer Valentina Tronel represented France at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Warsaw and finally won. This entry gave France the first out of 2 (currently) victory of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest.

On January 30, 2021, Pravi won Eurovision France, c'est vous qui décidez !, the French preliminary decision, for the Eurovision Song Contest 2021. In 2021, Pravi wrote the lyrics with Igit and Lili Poe and composed the music with Igit for the song "Voilà", with which Pravi represented France at the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 in Rotterdam and finally second place. (Måneskin won.) This year's entry achieved the highest ranking since 1977 (2nd place) and the most points (499 points) since 1956.

2021-present : Post Eurovision-ventures

In July 2021, Pravi announced her first international tour for her debut studio album, On n'enferme pas les oiseaux (Template:Lang-en), which came out on 27 August 2021.[19][20]

Pravi performed "Voilà" as an interval act at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2021, which took place on the 19th December in Paris, France.[21] Pravi also performed the song "L'homme et l'oiseau" (Template:Lang-en) at the 37th edition of the Victoires de la Musique, where she went on to win the Female Revelation of the Year award.[22][23]

On International Women's Day, 8 March 2022, Pravi released "Priére pour soi" (Template:Lang-en).[24]

On 13 July 2022, Pravi released "365", which is dedicated to all the fans who have supported her in the past year.[25]

In 2022, Pravi wrote the song "Oh Maman !" with Frédéric Château, with which the interpreter Lissandro Formica represented France at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Yerevan and ultimately won. This entrant gave France their second victory at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest.[26][27]

On 21 December, Pravi was announced as Florence in the TV movie Adieu Vinyle to be premiered on France 3. It is expected to premiere on the same channel in mid-Autumn of 2023. [28] This is Pravi's 3rd acting role after Un été 44 (2016) [29] and La sainte famille (2017, but premiered in 2019).[30] It is also credited on her portfolio that she starred in Barbara Pravi (voilà qui je suis) in 2021 but this was a documentary which she was the person they were filming about.[31]

Pravi announced on 6 January 2023 that she had signed to Virgin Records France after eight years at Capitol Music France.[32] She then revealed two days later that she was officially preparing her second full-length album. She is working on this alongside her television movie debut in Adieu Vinyle, a TV movie which is set to premiere on France 3 in mid-Autumn 2023.[33]

On 13 January 2023, she was announced as a temporary host on the BBC Sounds podcast show "Music Life". The first episode with her as a cover host included November Ultra, Pi Ja Ma, Yaël Naïm and Melissa Lauveux and the second episode explains Pravi's playlist "Sur la route" (on the road) which is a playlist she plays on tour. This appearance followed her French radio debut on RTL2's Foudre with Waxx, during which she co-hosted an episode with Waxx.

In late February 2023, she announced her first book Lève-toi and a single of that same title. Lève-toi will be a book in French and Arabic, with languages to be added shortly. It was collaboration with [[Editions Julliard], author Huriya Asmahan, translator Aref Al-Haidari, singer-songwriter-actress Megan Chung, singer-songwriter Emel and manager Élodie Filleul. The song to be released on 8 March for International Women's Day, while the book would be available in libraries worldwide on 9 March.[34]

Personal life

Pravi has a deep connection with Persian literature, with her maternal grandfather being of Iranian descent. Pravi is very active in the fight to end violence against women, having previously been a survivor of domestic violence.[35] She has frequently contributed to music initiatives intended to promote causes involved with women's rights.[36][37][38][39][40] Pravi was also invited to speak at Emlyon Business School through TEDx to speak about her career and how she found self-confidence.[41]

The author and composer of this ballad, "Mohammad Ali Amir Jahid "and "Morteza Ni Dawood" , have preferred that their names as the creators of this song remain hidden due to the fear of the possible reactions of religious fanatics to this song. A song with a theme in opposition to the compulsory hijab of women. Today's women's liberation movement is a newly blooming flower bud which seeds were planted by very brave and free sprite women. 170 years ago, Qurrat al-Ain was burned for took off her hijab to stand up against oppression, and no voice was raised from a man. 44 years ago, after the Islamic revolution in Iran, women were forced to wear hijab, but our fathers did not make a sound against it. Today, men in Iran risk their lives and die for freedom of women. And this is the victory itself. Viva: Woman, life, freedom Merci mes amies, mes sœurs, @aidanosrat et @golfarahani.
