Welcome

Hello, Natrajdr/2006to2008, and welcome to Wikipedia! I am Deepu Joseph (a.k.a. thunderboltz). Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

Ogg File Creation

Hi there!

To create anything in ogg format, first you need to record the file, usually by using an audio editing software. If you have one that you use well, please use that one. If not, a very powerful free audio editor is Audacity.

I will presume at this point that you can figure out how to use Audacity. If however you have problems, please feel free to ask.

Then, you can transform it into an ogg file by the process of encoding. With Audacity, this can be done by two ways:

  • Export it directly by using Audacity's built-in ogg library.
    • (Note: If it is a voice recording, high frequencies are not necessary and only makes large file sizes. Set the sampling rate to 22050 Hz, and the Ogg vorbis quality to 0. Only increase it if you deem the resulting audio quality unacceptable (for speech, it should be acceptable for most.)
  • Export the recording as a .wav, and encode it to ogg using various tools. This has an advantage, because you can use aoTuV (Aoyumi's Tuned Vorbis, an improved version of Vorbis tuned by a renowned developer, and is recommended on the Net's audio authority, HydrogenAudio)

Enjoy, and feel free to ask.

WikiProject India Newsletter: Volume 1, Issue 2 - November 2006

Project News
  • The Performing Community: Thanks to many contributors like you, we're proud to share that our community is the third most performing community. It has more than 50 FAs related to India, to its credit, lagging only behing Wikiproject Biography and WikiProject Military History.
    (Courtesy: Ganeshk at Discussion Board).
  • The Wikipedia 1.0 Assessment statistics for India related articles show there are 51 Featured Articles, 5 Class-A articles, 16 Good Articles, 101 Class-B articles, 167 Start-Class articles and more than 4000 Stubs. There were more than 10000 unassessed articles related to India.
What's New?
Looking forward toward more contributions from you! Happy Editing
Note from Editor's Desk
  • Welcome. It has been weeks and months since the idea of newsletter was mooted among the WikiProject India Community. This would be our first full-fledged edition of our Newsletter, and we'd like to start by saying we are very happy to have you among us.
  • This is your newsletter, and we want you to be part of it as well. Provide us with news tips here. It can be anything related to the project, from discussions to calls for help, and other interesting stuff within our community. If you have received or given any barnstars recently, do let us know.
  • Advertisements for recruitments within your WikiProject sub-groups are also welcome. We'll run special sections, and recurring columns in the coming issues.

  • Cartography Department (Shortcut:WP:INMAP): The Department of Cartography within the WikiProject India is a group of wikipedians who work on providing quality maps related to India. Their contributions gain more significance as we try to provide more information on places, districts and states of India. As a thumb rule, maps serve better if they are in SVG format. The location maps by the cartography department has helped us include location information based on latitudes and longitudes for a give place within India. The Indian Roadways map is a featured image, one amongst the few best road maps in the world. Still, there is more work to be done. There are 604 districts in India (see List of districts of India), and each district page needs a map of that district. You can help too. Contact the Cartography Department to learn how you can help in making the best maps in Wikipedia to be India-related!

Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may mention it at WikiProject India Outreach Department.

WikiProject India Newsletter: Volume I, Issue 3 - December 2006

Project News
  • Name change of cities in Karnataka: A straw poll was conducted on the proposal to change the name of cities in Karnataka, per the Nov 1, 2006 decision by the Karnataka government to rename them from the current anglicised forms. The result of the poll was to change the names. As controversial as the decision may be in the real world, the article Bangalore in Wikipedia still reflects the old name. You may be interested in knowing why. Dig the archives.
  • New Project Noticeboard (Shortcut:WP:INB): WikiProject India now sports a new colourful centralised noticeboard. An effort to make the noticeboard current and dynamic was mooted a few days back, and Ganeshk came up with the new format. The new noticeboard will strive to be the one-stop shop for all project related information. The shortcut is WP:INB.
  • Members List: The old members list is being phased out to give way for the new members list. New members are requested to add their names to the new members list. As the newsletter grows, further issues of the Project Newsletter will be delivered to those enlisted in the new list. So dash down now, to check if ur name is in there.

  • Welcome to the December 2006 edition of our newsletter. Time flies past like matter into the black hole. It is interesting to notice that we are already into the last month for the year of 2006. 2006 saw discussions and development beyond realisation. In the world of Wikipedia where quality counts than quantity, we have come a long way. We've made better than 'nothing', to say the least, and even that is an achievement. I take this opportunity to thank everyone including those who have dotted the i's and crossed the t's.

reg. GOI images

No, I'm afraid the images are indeed copyrighted. The GOI images found on sites like *.nic.in sites or those from public universities (from where the KG Balakrishnan pic was taken), are copyrighted by the Indian government. Unlike the works by the American govt, those by the GOI aren't in public domain. So I'm afraid we cannot have them on wikipedia.--thunderboltz(Deepu) 07:42, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject India Newsletter: Volume II, Issue 1 - January 2007

Project News
  • Project tagging:After a brief edit war over the addition of {{WP India}} to ancient archaeological sites now located in Pakistan, a "pre" parameter was introduced to remove the ROI flag from the template for pre-1947 articles, following discussion. After another large discussion on ANI alleging that the automated tagging by Ganeshbot and LostBot was "nationalistic", Ganeshbot was briefly blocked. Currently, the bots are again in action.
  • Swastika on Hinduism templates:Recently, an extremely large and at times emotional debate broke out regarding the use of the swastika on Hinduism templates, given its association with Nazism. As a result, {{Hindu Links}} now contains an educational message about the use of the swastika, as discussion on a more permanent resolution continues.

Can you please help on the meaning and entymology of Manjampatti?
the article says in History section:"Manjampatti derived its name from two Tamil words meaning ... and ... because ... <expand>" ThankYou.Marcus334 04:01, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your note. I'm stuck with "yellow village" for now. I recall finding a reference, which I've lost, meaning "cattle enclosure" or "animal enclosure". Does that sound right? It fits the location, a remote valley inhabited only by nomadic Paliyan, where herders from farther villages may have come. I really should go back to the area to get the local myth. I'm planning for that next fall.
Thanks,--Marcus 08:08, 2 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Also, What is the meaning of "manjam" in the context of this [song]?

WikiProject India Newsletter: Volume II, Issue 2 - March 2007

Project News
  • Jimbo's visit to India and the WikiCamp in Chennai: Jimbo recently visited India in late February and early March on wiki work. This included a trip to a WikiCamp in Chennai. The one day conference attracted 300 participants from across India and beyond dealt with issues facing wikis ([1]). It was widely covered by the press, eg The Hindu( [2]), which cited the efforts of Bhadani (edit count), Sundar (leadership on Tamil Wikipedia) and Ganeshk (Creation of Ganeshbot to create articles on Indian towns from census figures). Ganeshk himself travelled from California to attend the conference.
  • Wikipedia Weekly 15: Wikipedia Weekly, a informal Wikipedians' program that purports to give "A weekly audio roundup of Wikipedia happenings with news, interviews and roundtable discussions" recently interviewed two prominent editors Rama's Arrow and Ragib(listen). The entire 34 minute interview was entirely about the world of Indian subcontinent wiki-happenings, and was the first episode which was not entirely dominated by discussion of wiki-politics and wiki-bureaucracy, with the host Witty lama praising the efficiency of the project and its proliferation of featured content. Rama's Arrow cited the team spirit, friendship and respect among project members in discussing its success and FA productivity, as well as discussing subcontinental wiki-conflict. Ragib talked also of his public campaign to raise awareness of the Bengali Wikipedia in his native Bangladesh, which has seen a 30-fold increase in article count over the past year.

Kerala map

The map was mades with such dimensions so that the names of all places can appear in the water. I think a better option might be to reduce the size of the inset map or position it at the bottom left? -- PlaneMad|YakYak 12:39, 17 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No issue with modifying the map, just that im too lazy to readjust the boundary coordinates :P Will do the change in a couple of days -- PlaneMad|YakYak 17:36, 17 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Heh, just happened to be on the pc. Did some playing around with the template, check out Trivandrum. Prob is that you need a default alignment for the text which is now set to left. all labels in the sea unless explicitly defined as in the case with Kasargode -- PlaneMad|YakYak 17:50, 17 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A new wiki just for India

www.indianotebook.org/wiki

Hey Natrajdr, I noticed that you were interested in editing India articles. I just wanted to tell you about a new wiki that a friend and I have created called India Notebook, the url of which is above. A description of our site is as follows (copy-pasted from the main page): About Us: The ultimate aim of India Notebook is to document each and every little thing in India. From shops to restaurants to your local paanwalla in your hometown, India Notebook will have an entry on it so that anytime you find yourself wanting to go to, say, a new restaurant in your town, just log on, search for restaurants in your town and browse away. All we need is a little help from you. Just add all your favourite hangouts, restaurants etc etc and slowly but surely, we will have documented everything there is to see and do in India for anyone to reference, anywhere and anytime. Soon a visitor to Bombay will be able to simply come here and check out the hottest clubs, best eateries and coolest Museums without buying a guidebook. Anything and everything you want to know about a city will be right here, written by the locals.

Come and contribute. Review your favourite pubs/restaurants so that people get up-to-date information about any place in india from the locals. And also tell any friends of yours who edit wikipedia to come help out here. We're also thinking of integrating Google maps into the site, so that you can view the location of any place described on the site.

Don't hesitate to contact me at chaita@gmail.com

Best,

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Pfizer_logo.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Pfizer_logo.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BigDT 12:09, 7 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

License tagging for Image:ECI Logo.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:ECI Logo.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 06:06, 12 May 2007 (UTC)

News

It is nice to see you contributing to Portal:Current events/India, particulalrly when I am away. However, please provide a source for the news and try to include your entries in the date-wise column also. Regards. - P.K.Niyogi 00:04, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If we strictly follow the standards set in Portal:Current events then we will have very little to add in Portal:Current events/India because in India there is hardly any news article. Ours is a compromise. Since you have an interest in the matter, please update some of the items. - P.K.Niyogi 12:26, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WHS template

I understand what you're saying, that the name is not the same as the official UNESCO version of the name... but I've seen versions of WHS templates by past editors who modifies WHS templates; it ususally doesn't include words (which is often included as the official title) such as "Historic Centre of", "Ancient...", "Old...", "Ancient City of", or "Group of Monument of". I think it is because either the link doesn't directly link to it or it sounds a bit superfluous.--TheLeopard 07:46, 30 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:TDC Logo.gif

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:TDC Logo.gif. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 04:45, 3 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free use disputed for Image:Strongmedicine.jpg

Warning sign This file may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Strongmedicine.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 05:13, 3 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use Image:Sony Ericsson W700i.png

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Sony Ericsson W700i.png. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 7 days after this notification, per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Alx 91 03:09, 9 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:ICL logo.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:ICL logo.jpg. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 15:16, 4 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:PowerGridLogo.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:PowerGridLogo.jpg.

Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 20:21, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Tgc logo.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Tgc logo.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

Thank you. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. A tag has been placed on Template:BSE Sensex companies requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a deprecated or orphaned template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.

If the template is intended to be substituted, please feel free to remove the speedy deletion tag and please consider putting a note on the template's page indicating that it is substituted so as to avoid any future mistakes (<noinclude>{{transclusionless}}</noinclude>).

Speedy deletion of The Golden Chariot

A tag has been placed on The Golden Chariot requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for web content.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. —BradV 15:41, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Natrajdr, please do not move Lok Sabha constituencies with some other names. they are as per the Wikipedia Naming convention. Thanks, Shyam (T/C) 06:58, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have reverted your edit on the page as well. There were some links, which were not following previous naming convention, which is followed throughout the Wikipedia. If you have any question, kindly put it here. I will try to reply them. Thanks, Shyam (T/C) 07:25, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I see your rationale. I'll change the page again using the naming conventions. --Natrajdr (talk) 07:54, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I had reverted your recent changes. If you have made any other changes, then make them appropriately. Thanks, Shyam (T/C) 08:24, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I had edited and rearranged this template. You had left a note several days ago in the talk page that I did not included the names of various leaders.

It is true and I had done it intensionally. The reason I had arrainged the template this way is because I wanted this template to be the top level template containing just enough info that showed the structure, nature and organization of Indian politics. The individual links inside the template will direct readers to more information.

Let me know about your opinion. Thank you. Sumanch (talk) 08:56, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I saw that article you created, now I'm contributing to it. Terrible huh? Wiki Zorro 20:40, 13 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:2008 Jaipur blasts.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:2008 Jaipur blasts.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use.

Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 12:18, 15 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

An image or media file that you uploaded or altered, Image:BushandSingh02Mar2006.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion. Please see the discussion to see why this is (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry), if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you. A tag has been placed on Image:BushandSingh02Mar2006.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is a redundant copy (all pixels the same or scaled down) of an image in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not on Commons), and all inward links have been updated.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on [[ Talk:Image:BushandSingh02Mar2006.jpg|the talk page]] explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
