Abhishek Bachchan (Template:Lang-hi , Urdu: ابہشیک بچن, born 5 February 1976[2][3]) is an Indian actor.
Biography
Early life
Abhishek was born in Gorakhpur, Maharashtra, India. He is the son of Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan and renowned actress Jaya Bhaduri (she is also a Samajwadi Party MP in Rajya Sabha). Abhishek did his schooling at Jamnabai Narsee School, Bombay Scottish School, Modern School (New Delhi) and also went to Aiglon College. He then went to the United States to complete his education at Boston University. His grandfather, Harivansh Rai Bachchan, was a well-known poet of Urdu and Hindi. The original last name of the family is "Srivastav"; "Bachchan" was in fact a pen name used by his grandfather. However, when his father Amitabh Bachchan entered films, he did so under his father's pen name.
Career
Abhishek made his film debut in J.P.Dutta's Refugee along with Kareena Kapoor in 2000 but the film was not considered a success. In a span of four years, Bachchan went on to do many more movies, without any major box-office successes. However, with his performance in Mani Ratnam's Yuva, he proved his mettle as an actor.[4] He portrayed the character of Lallan which earned him the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award and every other supporting actor award at the major film award functions.[5][6][7]
In 2004 he starred in Dhoom which was the first box office hit of his career. In 2005 he shot to fame with four consecutive hits: Bunty Aur Babli, Sarkar, Dus and Bluffmaster.[8]. He recently won his second Filmfare Award in the Best Supporting Actor category for Sarkar.
His first 2006 release, the multi-starrer Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006) received mixed reaction at the box office.[9] He was also a part of Mani Ratnam's stage show, Netru, Indru, Naalai alongside many other co-stars. His second release Umrao Jaan failed to do well at the box office. His third release Dhoom 2, a sequel to his first hit Dhoom has done very well at the box office.[10]
His first release in 2007 was Guru. He has received much acclaim for his performance and the film has emerged his first true solo hit at the box office.[11]
The song "Kajra Re", which Abhishek performed in the film Bunty Aur Babli (2005), was voted best song of 2005 and best choreographed song of 2005 in a poll by the Hindustan Times.[12]
Personal life
Abhishek Bachchan is was engaged to actress Karisma Kapoor in 2001, an engagement later broken.[13] Gossip has linked him with a number of actresses.
After much speculation it was announced on January 14, 2007 that he became engaged to Aishwarya Rai in a private ceremony.[14] This was later confirmed by Amitabh Bachchan.[15].The couple is now said to get married by the 5th of April 2007, according to rumours. On the occasion of his 31st birthday, his father gifted him a Bentley Continental GT.[16] It was later found, however, that Amar Singh was the real owner of the Bentley. Mr. Amar Singh has maintained that he is the owner of the Bentley and has never gifted the car to Abhishek. [17]
