An armored hovertrain approaches the Tusken Raiders’ camp, taking out several Tuskens before riding away into the desert. Later that night, the Tuskens cremate their fallen. Troubled by their plight, Boba Fett travels to Tosche Station armed with a gaderffii stick and rifle. Nikto miners attack Fett at the cantina. Fett fights the miners, and takes their speeder bikes outside the cantina back to the Tuskens' camp, and begins to teach them how to ride and use the bikes in a plan to rob the hovertrain.
Days later, the hovertrain approaches, Fett and the Tuskens pursue the train with the speeder bikes. They manage to board it, jumping across carriages and fighting several sentries, eventually approaching the train engine, where Fett stops the train by using his gaderffii stick to disable the ship's engines. The Tuskens loot the train of weapons and supplies, and take the surviving Pykes captive. Fett asks who the leader is. The leading Pyke stands up, removing his mask. Fett tells him that since the Tuskens claim the Dune Sea as ancestral ground, a toll must now be paid for passage, and lets them return to the Pyke Syndicate with these new terms.
Later, the Tusken chief gives Fett a lizard in a basket, which climbs into his nostrils, causing him to experience visions including him climbing out of the Sarlacc[a] and watching his father leave Kamino on the Slave I as a child.[b] Fett returns to the Tusken camp the following day, and presents a branch from his night journey to the Tuskens. They lead Fett to a tent, where they clothe him in Tusken robes, and help him forge the branch into a new gaderffii stick. He parties that night with the other Tuskens, becoming one of their own.
In the present day, Fennec Shand leads the captured assassin from the first episode into Boba’s palace, where he holds him in court, demanding to know who sent him. After arguing, Shand presses a button that activates the trapdoor to the Rancor's den. The assassin panics and reveals he was sent by the mayor of Mos Espa. Begging for his life, Shand reveals the pit is empty, and they take him to visit the Ithorian mayor, Mok Shaiz. Once there, one of the mayor's guards shoot the assassin, and thanks Fett for turning him in, revealing he didn’t send the assassin or have intentions of killing him, and tells Boba to visit Garsa Fwip.
At Garsa's Sanctuary and Garsa explains that "the Twins" have laid claim to their late cousin Jabba's bequest. Fett, Shand, and the Gamorreans walk outside to see a procession carrying the two Hutts. Fett tells the Hutts this is his territory, prompting the latter to claim this as Jabba's territory and now theirs. Fett rejects this, stating that he is the Daimyo of Mos Espa. An armed black Wookiee known as Black Krrsantan approaches, but Fett is not intimidated, telling them they will have to kill him for the territory. As Shand and Krrsantan load their weapons, but Hutts leave, saying the matter will be dealt with later. As Shand tells Fett that they will have to get permission to kill the Hutts, Fett accepts that this is not over yet.
Production
Development
Then-Disney CEO Bob Iger said in February 2020 that spin-offs of The Mandalorian were being considered, and there was potential to add more characters to the series with the intention of then giving them their own series.[1] The Mandalorian's second-season finale, "Chapter 16: The Rescue", was released in December 2020. It includes a "surprise end-credit sequence" that revealed The Book of Boba Fett was coming in December 2021.[2] Jon Favreau, The Mandalorian's creator and showrunner, soon clarified that The Book of Boba Fett was its own series, separate from the third season of The Mandalorian. He explained that the spin-off was not announced by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy at the Investor Day event because they did not want to "spoil the surprise" of the reveal at the end of the episode. He added that production had already begun on the spin-off.[3][4]
The episode, directed by Steph Green and written by Favreau, is titled "Chapter 2: The Tribes of Tatooine".[5]
Casting
Temuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen reprise their roles from The Mandalorian as Boba Fett and Fennec Shand, respectively.[6][3][7] Jennifer Beals, David Pasquesi and Matt Berry return as their recurring characters Madam Garsa Fwip and the droid 8D8. Robert Rodriguez voices Mok Shaiz and David Pasquesi plays his majordomo from the previous episode. Carey Jones plays Black Krrsantan, a Wookie bounty hunter, who previously appeared in the Marvel Comics series, Star Wars: Darth Vader and Star Wars: Doctor Aphra.[8]
Music
Joseph Shirley composed the musical score for the episode, while Ludwig Göransson composed the main theme of the series. The featured tracks were released on January 21, 2022, in the first volume of the season two soundtrack.[9]
Reception
On Rotten Tomatoes the episode has an approval rating of 90% based on reviews from 21 critics, with an average rating of 7.50/10. The website's critics consensus states, ""The Tribes of Tatooine" advances the Book of Boba Fett saga with an engrossing blend of story and smartly staged action".[10]
