User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

Neutrality

Ironically, the section talking about neutrality is not very neutral. Instead of saying "This means that they must not be written from a liberal perspective that is unsympathetic to cops..." You could just as easily say "This means that they must not be written from a conservative perspective that is sympathetic to cops, if not full of positive bias towards them, or from the opposite perspective."

IMO you should just get rid of the sentence. It uses US culture war terminology in what's supposed to have a neutral, global perspective. Sativa Inflorescence (talk) 14:54, 26 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

To avoid any futher dilution of the discussion, please read what is discussed below but continue with any further comment at Talk:Winnipeg Police Service#Criticism. Thanks. 10mmsocket (talk) 11:00, 30 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I would appreciate if editors familiar with police department articles could assist at Winnipeg Police Service. An editor has reverted an edit to the "Criticism" section which appears WP:UNDUE, WP:IMPARTIAL, and poorly source. Thank you. Magnolia677 (talk) 10:14, 28 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I took a look at the material in question and personally think it's mostly OK. Some of the language could be toned down a little, e.g. "In 2022 and 2023, the Winnipeg Police Service faced widespread criticism" could drop the word "widespread"; and "The allocation of Winnipeg’s municipal budget towards the Winnipeg Police has drastically increased since the year 2000. While the Winnipeg Police consumed 17 percent of the City’s total operating budget in the year 2000, by 2020 this had risen to over 25%" could be improved by shortening to "The allocation of Winnipeg’s municipal budget towards the Winnipeg Police has increased from 17% since the year 2000, to 25% in 2020." Furthermore, the section on Justice 4 Black Lives Winnipeg's petition could benefit from some independent references acknowledging its creation, or better still any results / response from the authorities. But otherwise, the section uses a number of local and national sources that seem reliable - and I did search WP:RSN and WP:RSP. Conclusion - it needs some wordsmithing and a couple of additional references but I don't think the whole section merits deletion. 10mmsocket (talk) 11:32, 28 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Part of the article is sourced by the following, which I had to list using "nowikis" because one or more are blacklisted:
  • https://winnipegpolicecauseharm.org/blog/history-of-wpch/ - personal blog called "Winnepeg Police Cause Harm".
  • https://twitter.com/WpgPoliceHarm/status/1632444277769793539 - Twitter feed from "Winnepeg Police Cause Harm".
  • https://www.change.org/p/the-city-of-winnipeg-justice4blackliveswinnipeg-s-demands-to-make-winnipeg-safe-for-all-bipoc - an online petition.
And the conclusions reached from the reliable sources seem a WP:SYNTH. Magnolia677 (talk) 15:12, 28 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
And after removing the blacklisted sources, Twitter feeds and biased blogs...my edits were reverted by User:10mmsocket. Magnolia677 (talk) 18:23, 28 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes they were. You came here for advice and to see consensus and then go ahead and revert a bunch of content without waiting for replies either from me or from other people. It's not a race. It's not a problem that needs to be solved now, this evening, or even this week. Gaining consensus leads to better quality outcomes. Give it time. 10mmsocket (talk) 18:27, 28 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Your revert added back a blacklisted link. Magnolia677 (talk) 18:34, 28 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Like I say, give it time. Let others comment. 10mmsocket (talk) 18:40, 28 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have removed the one offending blacklist URL. Now the page has been fully protected for 3 days so there's can't be any more edit warring. Either bring others to a discussion here or better still, as you clearly don't like the one answer you got here, start a new discussion on the article's talk page setting out your opinion. 10mmsocket (talk) 19:07, 28 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If another editor is able to look at the edits I made to fix this train wreck before it was reverted, I would appreciate your feedback about whether they were an improvement. Thank you. Magnolia677 (talk) 20:50, 28 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
For the record, @Magnolia677 is not being accurate when they call WPCH a "personal blog." It is a community organization that regularly engages in civic life in Winnipeg and regularly presents at the city council meetings. Also, the WPCH article that's been linked to is accurate, and is written by James Wilt, an established journalist with bylines at many respected news outlets including The Narwhal, Vice News, Canadian Dimension, The National Observer and the Edmonton Journal, and has published books with Penguin Random House. Magnolia677 might disagree with criticism of the Winnipeg Police Service, but the idea that the sources are inaccurate or not reflective of public discourse around the Winnipeg Police Service is just flat-out wrong and betrays that the user is either completely uninformed about this topic, or has an axe to grind about this particular topic. Either way, I don't think they should be allowed to make any further edits on this page. Thomaspashko (talk) 03:17, 29 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@AOB9 just added this comment at Talk:Winnipeg Police Service "The Justice 4 Black Lives petition was released shortly before a peaceful protest at Manitoba legislature. "The group believes many local communities and grassroots organizations could take over the legal responsibilities of police" [1]. I believe this section does a good job at summarizing the demands of the petition." I believe AOB9 is correct. 10mmsocket (talk) 07:51, 29 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I have started a discussion about the source "WPG Police Cause Harm" at Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard#WPG Police Cause Harm. --Magnolia677 (talk) 17:22, 29 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
