Devendrakula Velalar

Devendrakula Velalar is a modern umbrella term for seven agricultural communities native to the southern, central and western districts of Tamil Nadu, India. These communities are the Devendra Kulathar, Kudumbar, Kadaiyar, Kaladi, Pallar, Pannadi and Vathiriyar. The term was legally recognised in 2021.[1]
Temple festivals
The Devendrakula Velalar community traditionally celebrate and initiate the temple car festivals at numerous locations, including the Perur Pateeswarar Temple,[2] the Koniamman Temple,[3] the Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam[4] and the festival at Thenthiruperai.[5]
Occupation
Their traditional occupation is that of cultivation, although by the 1990s large minority of them were employed in government or private services.[6]
