DarkEden (commonly abbreviated as DE) is a massively multiplayer online role-playing computer game developed and published by Softon. It is the first MMORPG in the horror genre. There are multiple versions of the game: Korean[1], Thai[2], Japanese[3] and International[4]. The Korean version was the first version to be released which was then followed by the International version, then the other versions came out after that.

DarkEden takes place in a horror-themed European landscape in which Vampires have taken control over the lands and are massacring the people that reside there. Players can travel to a wide variety of maps from the hilly mountain tops of Mt.Rodin to the artic wastelands of Lake Timor[5], using a variety of transporating methods ranging from motorbikes to transforming into a bat[6]. Players have the choice to fight on both sides as either a Vampire or Slayer, each with its own set of unique items, spells and locations. Players can interact with each other on the same side through standard chatting, trading of items, forming clans to conquer castles and partying other players.

History

The International version was released for the public to play on the 9 March, 2003. The game was greeted with enthusiasm as the first horror MMORPG and because it was free-to-play, and was in English.

The game had an audience of thousands yet it recieved only minor updates and the same basic gameplay remained. The game developers focused all their attention on improving the Korean version and abandoned work on the International version. Many players believe that the developers will fix the game like the Korean version, but till this day in time no such thing has happened. The game has been left unfinished and is missing many key features that would make the game otherwise more enjoyable.

During the middle of 2004, various speed hacks began to emerge allowing people to do things that they otherwise couldnt. The use of hacks and game exploits grew, which resulted in the Delete Era of 2006. Most players having had their characters deleted have now stopped playing the game and only a few hundred still remain playing the International version. Thus, most have moved on to other versions or private, illegal servers.

As of the 23 Feburary, 2007, the International servers have gone down and the game in unable to be downloaded. The game developers often referred to as GM's(Game Masters) have released the following information "The International server will be closed. We are trying to make new version as soon as possible."[7]. When the new version will be released is still uncertain, however it will most likely be similar to the other versions of DarkEden with the new features they contain

Races

There are two playable races in the International version, Slayers and Vampires. Each race accumalates experience to advance to a new level from attacking the other race, monsters and using spells, with each level requiring substantially more experience to advance. Players begin at level 1 and can progess through to level 150. Advancing through levels gives the player new spells/abilities that enchance their character, thus making it stronger. A player can have a maximum of three characters on a single account, but can make as many accounts as they wish.

Slayers

The human military, can choose to be one of five classes or a mix, Blade, Sword, Gun, Heal or Enchant. If the player intends to mix their class, they can only have a mass of 150 class levels. Playing as a Slayers involves more teamwork than Vampires because Slayers are vulnerable alone. Slayers require alot more grinding to reach higher levels then Vampires.

Slayer Classes

  • Blader
Specializes in dealing very-high damage while still having moderate defense. The most powerfulest unit in the entire game, nothing can match the damage inflicted by a Blader. Usually the unit in a party to quickly attack and kill single units quickly. Their main attribute is Strength.
  • Sworder
    File:Slayer Roahm.jpg
A Slayer Sworder using the spell Wide Lightning on a hoard of monsters at Raohm
Specializes in dealing high damage while retaining high defense. While not as powerful as a Blader, a Sworder more than makes up for less attack with a lot of defense. Usually the leader of a party due to the fact a Sworder can take the most punishment out of any class. Their main attribute is Strength.
Specializes in defense while dealing high damage. Uses all sorts of weapons like Submachine Guns, Assault Rifles, Sniper Rifles and Shotguns. As well as being able to plant landmines and throw grenades. The Gunmans main role in a party is to defend support units and support the frontline units. Their main attribute is Dexterity.
  • Healer
Specializes in all kinds of healing and resurrection, its major drawback is that it's really vulnerable on the frontlines due to its low hitpoints. A cleric that uses powerful healing spells and can even resurrect fallen soldiers, a must have for long skirmishs. Their main attribute is Intelligence.
  • Enchanter
Specializes in religious magic and casting buffs, unlike the Healer a Enchanter can hold its own on the frontline. This cleric uses devine powers to reveal invisible Vampires making it a very useful class and there offensive spells are quite potent. Their main attribute is Intelligence.

Vampires

The bloodsucking scourge, Vampires are generally a lot stronger then Slayers and are a lot easier to train up. Due to this Vampires are more popular and the ratio for Vampire players to Slayers players is more or less 2:1. There are no designated classes for Vampires because you can allocate your Ability Points as you see fit, however certain configurations are commonlly used, which are listed below. Vampires in parties also share experience, which aids to easier leveling and leeching

Vampire Classes

These are the most popular configurations for Vampires:

  • Mage
This is a 2:1 INT/DEX ratio that works well by providing the player with a strong magical ability yet a decent amount of defense and minimal cooldown for spells. Most common for a Vampire choosing Magic as their main form of offense.
  • Warrior
This is a 2:1 STR/DEX ratio that provides the player with a strong attack and a large amount of hitpoints, the added Dexterity allows the Vampire to remain accurate and have a high rate of HP regeneration. This was the most popular for a player that wanted to deal strictly in melee combat.
  • Pure STR
This is where all ability points are used on the strength attribute. The player is a walking behemoth dealing massize amounts of damage, having godlike hitpoints and the defense of a tank, but remians totally useless in PK((Player Kill)Killing someone of your own race).
  • Pure INT
By allocating all their ability point on INT, the Vampire has devastating magicical abilities but is very vulnerable to attack, its low defense and HP regeneration suffer from having no DEX or STR. Mostly used as an PK class.
  • Yam
This class adds equal points to every attribute resulting in it not being strong in any area and not being weak in another. The "all rounder" of the Vampire class, Yam is mostly used by beginners playing DarkEden for the first time, not really knowing what to do with their stat points.

Hacking

Due to the fact that the International version of the game had never had any updates or patches, exploits found in the game will not be fixed. Most of the hacks/exploits are simple to do which has contributed to their popularity. Almost all hacking is done using a simple packet editing program to duplicate and manipulate the games packets to achieve a desired result.

Most of the hackers are infact Script kiddies, that don't really know how it works, just that it does work. There are however more advanced Script kiddies that disrupt gameplay by IP) banning(banning a person from logging in by their IP address) a person for a certain amount of time.

Known Hack/Exploits

Known hacks/exploits out there are:

  • Delete Hack: It's more of an exploit, but commonly referred to as Delete Hacking. An individual can delete a character from the players account without knowing the players password, username or even private number. All they need is the characters name and they can delete it in a matter of minutes.
  • Name Hack: In an effort to avoid getting deleted, people began using ASCII symbols in their characters name (Eg.ќŴ¢WikiĈЖ) to prevent becoming a victim of an Delete Hacker. This only makes it a lot harder and more time consuming to delete someone, but it is still possible to delete someone that has been hexxxed, as it is referred to ingame.
  • Colour Hack: Not as destructive as as the other hacks listed, this hack changes your characters skin colour to an abnormal colour. Blue and red are most popular.
  • DC(Disconnect) Hack: This is the biggest loophole in the game, using a really simple bug in the game, an individual can disconect everybody from the server. It has been known for people to DC Hack for an entire day preventing anybody from playing.
  • Speed Hack: This is the most common hack in Dark Eden International, 95% of players speed hack. It basically speeds up the entire game so that a player attacks faster, moves faster and casts spells faster. Speed hacking is now considered as normal gameplay.
  • HP/MP Hack: This is another very popular hack that allows the player to instantly regenerate hitpoints and mana making them practically invincible. However this hack can only be used in a very limited amount of maps.

The Delete Era

Known mostly to long time DarkEden players, the Delete Era was the period of time that the Delete Hack first went public and almost all accounts were deleted.

During the middle of 2006, someone posted on the official DarkEeden forums and spammed ingame about how to delete hack peoples characters. Thousands of characters were deleted over a period of afew weeks. After having their accounts deleted, many people abandoned DarkEden International and moved to other versions or just stopped playing altogether.

A player unaware of the delete hack, having had a break from playing, would normally log in and be deleted in minutes.

Criticism

The game has been criticised mostly by its players as being unfinished and needing massize upgrades to fix exploits usued by unscrupulous players. The main problems associated with the game:

  • Most of the game is translated into English. and what is translated has many obvious spelling and grammar mistakes. (The International website has the same problem of poorly translated text)
  • Missing skills and spells shown ingame, but are unuseable
  • The absence of any missions/quests apart from just raising your characters level
  • An outdated version of nProtect Gameguard, the games anti-hack program
  • No form of support/contact with the people responsible for running and operating the game (devlopers/administrators/moderators)
  • Playable areas included with the game but are unaccessable
  • The high level of grinding needed to advance through levels
