Development
The seeds for Citadel were planted by Amazon Studios chief Jennifer Salke, who approached the Russo brothers and their independent studio AGBO about creating an ambitious, global spy show in mid-2018. The series was originally a partnership between AGBO and the screenwriting collective Midnight Radio, consisting of Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec. However, they departed the show during production in 2021 due to creative differences with the Russos, and David Weil took over as the new showrunner. This change of direction led to extensive reshoots in 2022.[15]
Richard Madden said of the plot and his character: "There are multiple characters and multiple storylines that all intertwine, and I personally play a character who is an amnesiac—eight years of his life, he’s basically become a new person. There's a journey of discovering who he was before the accident happened, and he no longer remembers anything. It's a clash between the life that he's been living for eight years, and the life that he used to live. You get to delve into exploring the psyche of dealing with the consequences of things that you're not aware that you've done."[citation needed]
As of 2023, Citadel was the second most expensive series of all time with a budget of US$300 million. This is largely due to the extensive reshoots which took place with the hiring of David Weil as showrunner.[16][17]
Casting
Starring alongside Madden and Chopra, Roland Møller will play Laszlo Milla, a lead operative of Citadel's rival intelligence agency, Manticore.[18]
Filming
Filming on the main series began in January 2021 and wrapped in December.[19][20]
However, reshoots occurred in early and mid-2022 under the supervision of Weil, the Russos, and director Thomas Sigel.[21]
Release
The six-episode series premiered on Amazon Prime Video on April 28, 2023, with its first two episodes.[5]
Reception
The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported a 57% approval rating with an average rating of 6.1/10, based on 30 critic reviews.[22] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned a score of 53 out of 100 based on 21 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[23]
