Ponniyin Selvan: II (transl. The Son of Ponni), also known and marketed as PS-2, is a 2023 Indian Tamil-language epic historical action adventure film directed by Mani Ratnam, who co-wrote it with Elango Kumaravel and B. Jeyamohan. The film is produced by Mani Ratnam and Subaskaran Allirajah under Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions. The second of two cinematic parts based on the 1954 novel Ponniyin Selvan by Kalki Krishnamurthy, it serves as a direct sequel to Ponniyin Selvan: I (2022). The film stars an ensemble cast including Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, R. Sarathkumar, Jayaram, Prabhu, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Vikram Prabhu, Prakash Raj, Rahman and R. Parthiban.

Ponniyin Selvan continues to follow the Chola prince Arunmozhi Varman, who would become the renowned emperor Rajaraja I. It was originally intended to be a single film but was split into two parts that were produced concurrently. Joint principal photography of both parts began in December 2019, halting twice due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Extra sequenced filmed for the sequel were wrapped up in March 2023. The soundtrack was composed by A. R. Rahman, with cinematography by Ravi Varman, editing by A. Sreekar Prasad, and production design by Thota Tharani.

Ponniyin Selvan: II was released in theatres worldwide on 28 April 2023 in standard, IMAX, 4DX and EPIQ formats. It received positive reviews from critics, who praised the direction, music, visuals, and performances of the cast.

Plot

Nandini and Aditha Karikalan were in love during their childhood. However, since Aditha is the Chola prince and Nandini, an orphaned commener, their love is thwarted and opposed by Kundavai. Nandini is later banished from the kingdom on the same grounds. Later, she is adopted by Veerapandian and raised as his daughter. In the present day, with Arunmozhi Varman alias Ponniyin Selvan widely believed to be dead, Nandini conspires with the Pandya rebels, led by Ravidasan, to avenge Veerapandian’s murder. She also manipulates Parthibendran into conspiring against Aditha. They decide to kill Aditha Karikalan and Sundara Chola on the same night. After being rescued by Oomai Rani, Arunmozhi is healed by the Buddhist monks in Sri Lanka.

Elsewhere, Vanthiyathevan listens to the nearby Pandya conspirators crafting plans of killing Karikalan, but is caught and held captive by them. Nandini announces that both Vanthiyathevan and Karikalan will die at her hands and that she has already invited Karikalan to Kadambur. Just as she is about to kill Vanthiyathevan, Vanthiyathevan tells her about how he met Oomai Rani, who closely resembles her. Nandini starts crying and spares his life, but he is still held captive. Later, Azhwarkkadiyan Nambi arrives secretly and saves Vanthiyathevan. Vanthiyathevan then goes and passes on the information of the planned assassination to Arulmozhi and Kundavai.

Coming to Madhurantakan being self proclaimed as King with Shivan Adiyars support, he discusses his plans of thwarting Sundara Chola and his sons and ascending the thrown. He forms a secret alliance with the King of Rashtruka Nadu, whom Karikalan spared in the war at the beginning of PS1. They plan for Madurantakan to take the throne and give parts of the kingdom to Sundara Chola's sons (Karikalan and Arulmozhi Varman) if they pledge their submission to him. Meanwhile, the completely healed Arulmozhi Varman meets up with his siblings Kunthavai and Karikalan who are rejoiced by his survival and Kunthavai warns Karikalan for going to Kadambur. Having learnt of his survival, the Pandyas plot to assassinate Arulmozhi Varman in Sri Lanka before his voyage to Tanjai but are thwarted by Vanthaiyadevan and Nambai’s help. Upon reaching Tanjai, Arulmozhi forges peace between Pazhuvendran and Boothi’s forces, while in Kadambur, Karikalan agrees to split the Kingdom and proclaim Madhurantakan as King under the condition that he keeps all his army with himself only. Whilst Madhurantakan is on his way to his coronation ceremony, Periya Pazhuvendran gets to know about the conspiracy of killing Karikalan in Kadambur through Karuthiruman and rushes back to Kadambur to save the crown prince Karikalan. The Pandyas, having infiltrated both Kadambur and Tanjai under Ravidasa and Soman, respectively attack them, in that struggle Karikalan is killed in Nandini’s chamber with both Vallavarayan and Periya Pazhuvettarayar knocked out in the Kadambur and Oomai Rani is killed while saving Sundara Chola in Tanjai where attack is fend off by Arulmozhi, Chinna Pazhuvettarayar, Boothi and Poonguzhali and Soman is killed by Arulmozhi.

Sundara Chola reveals to Kunthavai that Oomai Rani is actually Mandakini, her lover who saved him in past battle and may be her & Nandini’s biological mother while Ravidasa reveals to Nandini that Mandakini was actually Veerapandian’s wife and his mother who was betrayed by both her lovers and they listened to Nandini because she is the crown Princess of Pandya kingdom and Veerapandian’s daughter. Out of disbelief and guilt, Nandini commits suicide in the Ponni river. On the wake of Karikalan’s death, Rashtrakutas, Mahendra and Parthibendran Pallavan join forces to battle Arulmozhi, Vanthaiyadevan, Madhurankam, Chinna Pazhuvettarayar and Boothi’s forces but only to be defeated and killed by them on the battlefield. Finally on the coronation Arulmozhi decides to crown Madhuramkam as the Chola King while he, Vanthaiyadevan, Chinna Pazhuvettarayar and Boothi’s would always be there under his command with only aim to be the prosperity and welfare of the Chola Kindgom.
