History of Excavation at the Early Phase Orientalizing Complex
As archaeologists excavated the site in 1970, they discovered a complex that predated the Archaic building.[1] Underneath the floor level of an Archaic building, archaeologists discovered the foundations of a structure that dates to the Orientalizing Period.[1] Subsequently, as excavation continued, Archaeologists excavated three buildings: Orientalizing Complex 1 in 1970, Orientalizing Complex 2 in 1980, and Orientalizing Complex 3 from 1996-1999.[1] However, using features on ceramics discovered in the buildings, Archaeologists later discovered that the complexes they excavated dated to the intermediate phase of the Orientalizing period.[2] This date was further supported by the discovery of the Early Phase Orientalizing Period Complexes (EPOC).
The Early Phase Orientalizing Complex
Once archaeologists differentiated between early and intermediate phase complexes, they dated two complexes from the Early Phase Orientalizing Period. The first complex was identified as Early Phase Orientalizing Complex Four (EPOC 4). It is located in the west part of the site, and materials found at the site suggest it has a domestic function.[2] EPOC 5 is located to the southeast of EPOC 4. Unfortunately, EPOC 5 was poorly maintained, so the function of the building is impossible to deduce.[2]
