Peter Urban (born 14 April 1948 in Bramsche, Lower Saxony) is a German musician and radio host.[1]

Biography

Urban attended Gymnasium Carolinum in Osnabrück and Artland-Gymnasium in Quakenbrück. At the University of Hamburg, he studied English, sociology and history. He obtained a doctorate in 1977 with a thesis on the texts of Anglo-American popular music.

Since May 1974, Urban has worked at the Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR).[1] In addition, he participated in musical projects, as composer of the group Bad News Reunion and the album Götz George Liest Charles Bukowski in 1978.[2] In 1988, he became editor of the music department of the NDR.

Urban has been the German commentator for the Eurovision Song Contest since 1997, following Jan Hofer. Due to illness in 2009, he was unable to commentate on the 2009 Contest, with Tim Frühling filling in,[3] but he returned to commentate in 2010. Urban will step down as the German commentator after the 2023 contest.[4] Urban has also commentated on the Eurovision Dance Contest in 2007.

In 2013, Urban retired as an editor. However, as a freelancer, he continues to host the NDR 2 radio programmes NDR-Info-Nachtclub and NDR-2-Soundcheck Neue Musik for the German regional broadcaster NDR,[4] and has been described as the "voice of the station".
