Please properly discuss in talk page of article instead of edit warring

I am concerned that you refuse to properly discuss the contentious material about Tudor Dixon that you reincorporated. I had questioned and challenged said info for being inaccurate and I tried to reword it in a more neutral way. In addition, you also seemingly ignored the arbitration ruling that I included in the edit summary of my edit removing said challenged contentious information.

Said ruling states,

In cases where the appropriateness of material regarding a living person is questioned, the rule of thumb should be "do no harm." This means, among other things, that such material should be removed until a decision to include it is reached, rather than being included until a decision to remove it is reached.

According to WP:CONSENSUS,

Decisions on Wikipedia are primarily made by consensus. [...] Decision making and reaching consensus involve an effort to incorporate all editors' legitimate concerns, while respecting Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.

According to WP:EDITWAR,

An edit war occurs when editors who disagree about the content of a page repeatedly override each other's contributions. Editors engaged in a dispute should reach consensus or pursue dispute resolution rather than edit war.

You mentioned an unspecified editor in the edit summary of your revert. In the talk page of the article, in the relevant thread (titled "Restoration of contentious info in place of neutral language ") the only other editor is the ip user, who actually stated, "Why not quote what she actually said/believes, that: 'Liberal policymakers are pushing COVID-19 vaccines on our children and forcing parents out of the process'".

Finally, I see the sheer quantity of the edits you have and your permissions. Surely one would expect that an editor with said characteristics would seek more proper discussion instead of seemingly ignoring Wikipedia guidance and unilaterally reverting others edits while refusing to properly discuss. Thinker78 (talk) 02:36, 22 November 2022 (UTC)

Sorry but I don't intend to get drawn into a prolonged discussion with you about a single well-sourced sentence. ––FormalDude (talk) 02:57, 22 November 2022 (UTC)
It is clear we have a dispute and that I had questioned the contentious information, meeting the threshold of the arbitration ruling. If you didn't want to discuss then you should not have reincorporated contentious information in a biography of a living person. Now I will seek dispute resolution. Thinker78 (talk) 03:05, 22 November 2022 (UTC)
I did discuss. ––FormalDude (talk) 03:08, 22 November 2022 (UTC)

Rick and Morty title card

Explanation? Throast {{ping}} me! (talk | contribs) 11:56, 26 November 2022 (UTC)

@Throast: Most TV shows seem to use the non-free title card for the infobox image. ––FormalDude (talk) 18:48, 26 November 2022 (UTC)
First off, not a great argument, and not the case in quite a few featured- or GA-level TV series articles, see The Simpsons, House (TV series), Family Guy, Cold Feet, The Emperor's New School for examples. In this case, the title card only features the logo against a black background and is essentially the same as the SVG logo, only low-resolution and non-scalable. Whataboutism aside, I don't see any great arguments for including the title card over the SVG logo. Throast {{ping}} me! (talk | contribs) 19:23, 26 November 2022 (UTC)
Start a talk page thread and we can see what others think. ––FormalDude (talk) 19:31, 26 November 2022 (UTC)
So far, you're the only one objecting, so it'd be great to hear at least some substantive arguments. You gotta love an editor who reverts without explicit cause and, when confronted, passes on the issue to the article talk page... Throast {{ping}} me! (talk | contribs) 19:46, 26 November 2022 (UTC)
@Throast: Per MOS:TVIMAGE: "For a show's main article, an intertitle shot of the show (i.e., a screenshot capture of the show's title) or a promotional poster used to represent the show itself should be used." Gotta love an editor who nags and nags about a single revert restoring the policy-backed WP:STATUSQUO. ––FormalDude (talk) 22:20, 26 November 2022 (UTC)
An editor with a toolset like yours should be aware that MoS is a guideline, not policy, that's been deviated from in several articles which have somehow still managed to reach FA-status. This discussion is still missing a counterargument with actual merit. Throast {{ping}} me! (talk | contribs) 22:33, 26 November 2022 (UTC)
Apparently WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS is a great argument when it happens to support your preferred version. ––FormalDude (talk) 22:36, 26 November 2022 (UTC)
Are you kidding? I've laid out my actual reasons for the change in my very first response to you. I'm not arguing to include the image based on the fact that other articles use similar images; I'm simply rebutting your assertion. Throast {{ping}} me! (talk | contribs) 22:43, 26 November 2022 (UTC)
All I asserted was a quote from the manual of style. Pointing out that some pages don't follow the quoted text is not a rebuttal–the manual of style still says what I quoted. It's not any less legitimate just because pages exist that don't follow it. ––FormalDude (talk) 22:49, 26 November 2022 (UTC)

Autopatrolled granted

Hi FormalDude, I just wanted to let you know that I have added the autopatrolled user right to your account. This means that pages you create will automatically be marked as 'reviewed', and no longer appear in the new pages feed. Autopatrolled is assigned to prolific creators of articles, where those articles do not require further review, and may have been requested on your behalf by someone else. It doesn't affect how you edit; it is used only to manage the workload of new page patrollers.

Since the articles you create will no longer be systematically reviewed by other editors, it is important that you maintain the high standard you have achieved so far in all your future creations. Please also try to remember to add relevant WikiProject templates, stub tags, categories, and incoming links to them, if you aren't already in the habit; user scripts such as Rater and StubSorter can help with this. As you have already shown that you have a strong grasp of Wikipedia's core content policies, you might also consider volunteering to become a new page patroller yourself, helping to uphold the project's standards and encourage other good faith article writers.

Feel free to leave me a message if you have any questions. Happy editing! TheSandDoctor Talk 19:55, 26 November 2022 (UTC)

Question from Qfaceae (19:03, 24 January 2023)

Hi there FormalDude,

Thanks for taking time out of your day and offering to help out. I usually end up editing Wikipedia pages that I stumble upon in my day to day life, with info that's out of date. For example, yesterday I was looking at the List of plants that are extinct in the wild page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_plants_that_are_extinct_in_the_wild) and noticed that it hadn't been updated since 2016. After some wrangling I got the datasheet from IUCN, the original source, and found an additional 7 species classified as extinct in the wild.

My question is this... I can easily add seven species manually on this one page, and keep the formatting all the same, etc. But the template on the side has its own page and, of course, links to other similar pages with many more species- Endangered Species numbered 3,654 in 2016, and now over 10,000 endangered species have been identified. I want to update the template, but I realize this would change the template's data for the Endangered, extinct, etc pages. And I don't think it's sensible to manually enter tens of thousands of species that have been added since the page was edited in 2016.

All this to say that I went into this page trying to make a few small updates, and ended up realizing that a web of pages is significantly outdated, and I don't feel like it's a task meant for the hands of one human- are there scraping tools I'm missing, or anything similar, for getting this data onto Wikipedia en masse? Advice greatly welcomed.

Cheers,

Qfaceae --Qfaceae (talk) 19:03, 24 January 2023 (UTC)

Hi Qfaceae, good question! This isn't an area that I'm very experienced with, but I did some looking and it seems that there are tools like Beastie Bot that can be used to automate the creation of species lists. I'm not sure how to use it, but you could ask the bot's owner or at WikiProject Extinction or WikiProject Plants. I hope this gets you headed in the right direction! ––FormalDude (talk) 23:51, 2 February 2023 (UTC)
Hello Qfaceae. Please feel free to update the page! Sorry, I have not been maintaining Beastie Bot and it would likely take significant work to get it going again. If the template with the pie-chart is a problem, you might find it easier to make a duplicate of it before editing it, or just remove it from the page entirely, as it's outdated anyway. Please don't treat it as set in stone. Cheers —Pengo 10:46, 3 February 2023 (UTC)
Thanks Pengo. I will probably update the template and update the smaller pages it links to where only a handful of species have been added, and I'll leave the outdated lists with thousands of species for someone else and/or another day. Cheers! Qfaceae (talk) 20:04, 6 February 2023 (UTC)

Greetings, the discussion is still ongoing, since the outcome was `no consensus`, and according to WP:NOCONSENSUS and WP:STATUSQUO for BLPs, the guidelines suggest In discussions related to living people, a lack of consensus often results in the removal of the contentious matter, regardless of whether the proposal was to add, modify, or remove it., and If you are having a dispute about whether to include it, the material is automatically contentious. should that guide the outcome of this decision so that the controversial matter may be put to rest? It's worth noting that the editors on the other side have made multiple edits to other politicians labeling them `far-right`, which seems highly suspicious to me, and could be considered biased editing. Looking forward to your feedback. Kcmastrpc (talk) 01:21, 4 February 2023 (UTC)

eye I have read the above message. I will reply when I have a moment. ––FormalDude (talk) 21:29, 4 February 2023 (UTC)
@Kcmastrpc: It says often, but not always. Since the disputed material is not at all poorly sourced and discussion mainly focused on how the material should be included rather than if it should be included, I do not believe there is sufficient justification to remove it. ––FormalDude (talk) 04:21, 5 February 2023 (UTC)
FD, I don't think that is a good closing claim. NOCON is rather clear about this as this is a label in wiki-voice. Those who felt it could be in the lead were generally in favor of an attributed claim. Also, this is a relatively new addition that isn't stable and is being challenged for the first time (ONUS). As such, removal absent consensus is would be the correct path if the compromise, attributed version doesn't have consensus. Springee (talk) 16:56, 5 February 2023 (UTC)
FD, I'm reading the close now and I'm in agreement with Springee. WP:ONUS applies when consensus was never attained to include information in an article, especially when there are WP:BLP considerations. The content was never stable in the article, so there's no plausible claim that WP:SILENT applies, and I don't see any discussions that attained consensus for inclusion by looking at the article's talk page. Please consider self-reverting or changing your closing summary on WP:BLPN. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 15:34, 8 February 2023 (UTC)

Hello

Hope your well 🤗

I hope this makes sense 🤞.

I'm just wanting to find out where I went wrong today when trying to add information on Wiki. This is my first time trying to add info regarding a tv show I starred in. I have worked with Mr Harry Michaels. I added successfully on his Wiki page a tv show he produced many moons ago. I updated the info successfully today. When I tried to add further info regarding the show "Materialscientist" reverted my info regarding the SBS show called Seeing Is Believing". Have I done something wrong? I wanted to add further information including the cast I worked with.

Thank you & hope to hear from you soon. 🤗🌻 --Helen Anton (talk) 06:31, 9 February 2023 (UTC)

Hello FormalDude

The Darrin Gray Article was declined but at the bottom it shows this "This article may have been created or edited in return for undisclosed payments, a violation of Wikipedia's terms of use. It may require cleanup to comply with Wikipedia's content policies, particularly neutral point of view. (February 2023)."

I created this article for free.

Is the 18 cited sources not enough or not notable enough? Not sure what else I need to do.

Please advise and thank you for your help. Renee 02/08/23 Renee530 (talk) 10:56, 8 February 2023 (UTC)

@Renee530: Right now it does not pass WP:BASIC. As I said in my review, the article needs more sources with significant coverage (not just passing mentions) about the subject in reliable sources that are independent of the subject. ––FormalDude (talk) 02:12, 23 February 2023 (UTC)

I'd like to be adopted so that I can contribute to Wikipedia constructively; I also don't want to receive messages accusing me of violence. So, are you still adopting? Ok, that's fair enough, and thank you for offering to answer questions. The violence message was due to my first ever edit and scared the life out of me.Bijou1995 (talk) 13:43, 23 February 2023 (UTC) - -I found the tilde key :)

Mentorship

Hey!

I am really interested in becoming a good wikipedia editor, however a lot of the edits I have made have been contested and I have made a few mistakes. I am looking for someone to mentor me in becoming a great editor, do you think you could help with this?

Thanks MrBauer24 (talk) 22:36, 23 February 2023 (UTC)

Hi @MrBauer24, thanks for reaching out! Please know that the mentorship program does take up a lot of your time on reading material (polices & guidelines) and completing assignments. If that's something you're alright committing to, I'm happy to proceed. ––FormalDude (talk) 22:51, 23 February 2023 (UTC)

Question from KristelNL (08:29, 27 February 2023)

Hi FormalDude, I became a brand new Wikipedia editor yesterday and I've got a question about references. I've tasked myself with documenting the regulatory process of Formula One. A sport which I enjoy to watch but also one in a far from transparent universe governed by quite some non-disclosed documents involving commercial parties. This comes with some challenges regarding references.

Several claims I would like to make can only be substantiated by on-line references on sites which require a (free or paid) subscription, or by hearsay information published by editors on specialized platforms (which they cannot formally substantiate as they get their information from their own trusted sources). Is there a Wikipedia policy which outlines what to do in such situations? --KristelNL (talk) 08:29, 27 February 2023 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) See WP:PAYWALL. You are allowed to use sources that require a subscription as long as they meet the other rules we set for sources (reliable, independent, etc). Anything that you would describe as "hearsay" is by definition very unlikely to be appropriate for Wikipedia. Trainsandotherthings (talk) 18:27, 27 February 2023 (UTC)

Hello, FormalDude. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or draft page you started, "Capitalism and genocide".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}}, {{db-draft}}, or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thank you for your submission to Wikipedia! InvadingInvader (userpage, talk) 04:57, 1 March 2023 (UTC)

As much as I don't want to care, Special:Diff/1065219620 seems to have been in line with the RfC and yet you were ignored and it has remained. Is there a discussion I am missing? Slywriter (talk) 00:00, 2 March 2023 (UTC)

Sorry, I found this when looking for something else. I agree with FD's removal and it does seem in line with the RfC closing. I think that LABEL should be pulled from the opening of the lead. Springee (talk) 14:29, 2 March 2023 (UTC)
It looks like it was restored a few months ago (Special:Diff/1127016898) despite no new discussion. ––FormalDude (talk) 19:54, 2 March 2023 (UTC)

ANI

Hi, most ANI threads don't actually need closure. If you are going to close any, please make sure you don't don't close them prematurely. For example, a block of an established editor will often be contested by the blocked editor so it's appropriate to leave the thread open for a block review. But considering ANI is already the second-most edited page on the entire wiki, it's better not to make meta edits unless they're really necessary. Contentious topic notice

Why have you taken it upon yourself to indiscriminately post this contentious topic notice on my talk page, and on the talk pages of several other editors who've recently edited 2023 Covenant School shooting? Do you honestly think you're accomplishing anything by doing that? How about you only post it if you encounter an editor whose edits to a contentious article have been problematic? Rowing007 (talk) 18:29, 30 March 2023 (UTC)

@Rowing007: Anyone editing the page should be informed of the contentious topic(s) that apply, so I've taken to notifying users who are editing the page multiple times and have not been notified. The notice specifically states that it does not imply there is anything problematic with your edits. As for what it accomplishes, see WP:Contentious topics § Awareness of contentious topics. ––FormalDude (talk) 18:47, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
I know what the message explicitly states. Nevertheless, the page is already EC-only. That alone should signal that anyone editing it is experienced enough to understand a) that it is contentious, and b) how to deal with contentious topics. Therefore, your self-appointed task of posting the notices is pretty unwarranted and only serves as an irritant. Rowing007 (talk) 19:10, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
@Rowing007: Unfortunately EC protection does not mean everyone editing the page is experienced or that they are aware about contentious topics. Sorry you feel this standard notification that is required for someone to be formally WP:AWARE of contentious topics is an irritant, but it is fully warranted. If you do not wish to receive CT notifications, I recommend using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template in order to note which contentious topics you know. ––FormalDude (talk) 19:15, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
It's truly not warranted, and your little crusade has not accomplished anything, as it is purely a redunancy, considering the massive warnings already in place on the article when one tries to edit it. Reserve the notice for those who've demonstrated they would benefit from it. Thanks. Rowing007 (talk) 19:20, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
@Rowing007: "When an editor first begins making edits within any contentious topic, anyone may alert the editor of the contentious topic designation using the {{Contentious topics/alert/first}} template." It's not a crusade and I am but one of many editors who place contentious topic notices. ––FormalDude (talk) 19:22, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
You like that procedure, eh? Just because you can ("may") doesn't mean you should. Refer to above comments. It's lazy editing and self-entitlement to indiscriminately post it. Rowing007 (talk) 19:31, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
I'm not sure why you're giving me grief when you yourself have placed notices. Two other editors have also given you notices and I don't see you ranting on their talk pages. ––FormalDude (talk) 19:26, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
I'm not "giving you grief". I'm expressing my disdain with your behaviour. Also, nice attempt at trying to dig up dirt, but you're falling short, because you haven't even properly ascertained the context of that particular case, nor have you summarized it appropriately here, as I did respond to the editors in kind. It would be sound practice for you to not post the notice without investigating the edits first. Rowing007 (talk) 19:31, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
You've never edited Bon courage's talk page and you "responded" to Woodroar by giving them a CT notice. Am I missing something? ––FormalDude (talk) 19:35, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
Yes, you are! However, this isn't the place for explaining that, and it's entirely irrelevant to this discussion, not to mention the fact you were not at all involved, so I'm not sure why you think it's a good idea to bring it up. Moral of the story: it would be sound practice for you to not post the notice without investigating the edits first. Rowing007 (talk) 21:10, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
@Rowing007: The only investigation required is confirming that you've edited a contentious topic area and are formally unaware. If you want to be left alone, stop editing my talk page. ––FormalDude (talk) 21:19, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
The time to have left me alone was went you took it upon yourself to harass me with the contentious topic warning. It's fallacious to claim that the only investigation required is confirming that someone has edited a contentious topic area and is formally unaware; examining their edits for disruption prevents this exact kind of frustration. Rowing007 (talk) 21:24, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
@Rowing007: Nobody has ever been this frustrated with me in the hundreds of contentious topics notices I've placed. What would prevent this is you choosing not to be upset by standard, ubiquitous wiki notices. Obviously I can't control your emotions. ––FormalDude (talk) 21:34, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
Ascribing emotions where there are none is sophistry; I referred to frustration in the sense of "the act of frustrating", where frustrate means "to hinder or thwart", because you have hindered my experience by choosing to post the notice to my talk page. The way in which others have or have not reacted to your actions is none of my concern; please stop constructing straw man arguments. Rowing007 (talk) 21:45, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
Oh yes, it's very clear you are keeping emotions out of this.[sarcasm] ––FormalDude (talk) 21:48, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
Pure sophistry; completely unproductive. Rowing007 (talk) 21:52, 30 March 2023 (UTC)

Questions from Ver1tey (00:50, 8 April 2023)

Hello FormalDude. I edited an article today and it now seems to be deleted. Can you please help? Thanks --Ver1tey (talk) 00:51, 8 April 2023 (UTC)

Hello FormalDude. I should have given more specifics in my previous question. The article that I was editing was “Nick Savides”. The last edit that I made, adding an image from Commons, was the morning of April 7, then I saw the article was missing by later that day (today). I looked on the deletion log and did not find it there. I would appreciate it if the article could be restored to before the previous edit. --Ver1tey (talk) 01:57, 8 April 2023 (UTC)

@Ver1tey Forgive me butting in, but have you looked at Draft:Nick Savides? —C.Fred (talk) 01:58, 8 April 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for noting that. I do see the draft. It has the all edits that I made in the last few days, but I made those on the live article. I’m confused that the live article is not viewable. I apologize that I am new to editing. Ver1tey (talk) 02:14, 8 April 2023 (UTC)
