Bihar Day (Bihar Diwas) is observed every year on March 22,[1] marking the formation of the state of Bihar. On 22 March 1912, the Bihari Hindi speaking-majority Patna, Chotanagpur and Bhagalpur divisions and Odia speaking-majority Orissa division of the Bengal Province were separated to form the Province of Bihar and Orissa in British India as the home land for the Bihari Hindi and Odia speaking people (In the same year, Assamese speaking-majority Assam Valley and Surma Valley divisions of Bengal Province were separated to form Assam Province in British India as the home land for the Assamese speaking people, the Odia speaking-majority Orissa division of the Province of Bihar and Orissa was separated in 1936 to form Orissa Province in British India as the home land for the Odia speaking people, during the partition of British India i.e. India in 1947, the remaining divisions of the Bengal Province i.e. Bengali speaking-majority divisions were divided between the Pakistani province of East Bengal, now Bangladesh i.e. Bengali Country, and the Indian province of West Bengal as the home lands for the Bengali speaking-Muslims i.e. Bengali Muslims and the Bengali speaking-Hindus i.e. Bengali Hindus respectively).[2][3] The day is a public holiday in Bihar.[4]
Bihar Day was started and celebrated on large scale by Bihar Government in the tenure of Nitish Kumar.[citation needed] Apart from India, it is celebrated in countries including the United States, Germany,[5] Britain (Scotland),[6] Australia, Canada, Bahrain, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Trinidad and Tobago and Mauritius.[7]
Observance
Every year the Government of Bihar issues a notification declaring the 22 March to be a public holiday to be celebrated as Bihar Day. This holiday applies to all the offices and companies under the jurisdiction of the State and central Government as well as Schools celebrate this day by organising various programmes participated by students.[citation needed]
