Coldplay concert chronology |
The Music of the Spheres World Tour is the ongoing eighth concert tour currently being undertaken by British rock band Coldplay. It was announced on 14 October 2021 in support of their ninth studio album, Music of the Spheres, and marked a return to live performing after the COVID-19 pandemic. The band had not toured for their previous record, Everyday Life (2019), putting shows on hold until they could work out how to ensure it would be environmentally friendly. According to a plan they developed for over two years, emissions are meant to be reduced by 50% compared to A Head Full of Dreams Tour (2016–17).
Similar to the Mylo Xyloto Tour (2011–12), the concert run features extensive use of pyrotechnic and confetti visuals. However, they were adapted to reduce carbon footprint: the former has less explosive charge and uses new formulas to reduce harmful chemicals, while the latter is 100% biodegradable and require less compressed gas for ignition. Meanwhile, Xylobands were replaced by PixMob wristbands made from plant-based materials.[2] Other efforts include the first ever mobile rechargeable show battery (developed with BMW) and a mobile application to interact with fans and help them to take environmentally conscious travel options.
Coldplay also partnered with One Tree Planted, ClientEarth, the Grantham Institute and numerous other organizations to ensure their endeavour's success. Additionally, the band pledged to plant a tree for every ticket sold through a reforestation agreement. They broke various attendance and gross records in Europe and Latin America, moving over two million tickets in both continents. The tour started in Costa Rica's Estadio Nacional on 18 March 2022 and was met with widespread acclaim from music critics, who praised their stage presence and joyful performance, concluding the shows were "triumphant", "immersive" and "intimate".
Development
Background
After releasing their eighth album Everyday Life (2019), Coldplay stated they would not be touring until they could ensure their concert runs are environmentally friendly,[3] which led the record to be promoted with small shows for charity and a special performance at the Amman Citadel in Jordan, broadcast by YouTube.[4] On 14 October 2021, a day before the release of Music of the Spheres, the band posted on social media they would be returning to live shows after the COVID-19 pandemic.[5] The announcement was accompanied by a detailed 12 steps plan, which was developed for two years with environmental experts and set out how Coldplay would reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 50% compared to A Head Full of Dreams Tour.[6] To celebrate the album's release, they inaugurated the Climate Pledge Arena on 22 October 2021.[7] The concert was broadcast by Amazon Prime Video and followed by a performance at Expo 2020's Programme for People and Planet,[8] while the tour began in Costa Rica due to the country's renewable-energy-sourced power grid.[9]
Sustainability
A team of sustainability experts was commissioned to investigate Coldplay's carbon footprint and study how to reduce it.[10] Along with BMW, the band also developed the first ever mobile rechargeable show battery,[11] which was made from recyclable BMW i3 batteries and powered concerts by using renewable resources such as hydrotreated vegetable oil, solar power and kinetic energy.[12] Unavoidable emissions were offset according to Oxford's principles.[13] They claimed a tree would be planted for every ticket sold through a global reforestation agreement with One Tree Planted as well.[14] For transportation, the tour was routed to reduce air travel, ground freight was done with electric vehicles or biofuel and the band used commercial flights whenever possible.[15] In all flights, commercial and charter, a surcharge to utilise Sustainable Aviation Fuel from Neste was paid.[16] The stage was built with lightweight, re-usable materials and upgraded to incorporate low-energy LED displays, lasers and lighting set-ups, along with a PA system that consumed 50% less power, thus reducing environmental noise outside the venues.[16] Additionally, they used wind-turbine technology on delay towers and solar blankets on unused seats.[17]
For special effects, Coldplay used biodegradable confetti adapted to require less compressed gas for ignition, while pyrotechnics had new formulas to reduce or eliminate harmful chemicals and mitigate the explosive charge.[16] The PixMob wristbands worn by the audience were made from 100% plant-based materials and the band pledged to decrease their production by collecting, sterilising and recharging them after every show.[18] To minimise food waste, they had crew catering menus that offered plant-based and meat-free options as the standard, sourced products from suppliers adept to regenerative agriculture techniques, supported the development of synthetic, lab-grown cultured meals, donated surplus to local food banks and composted organic waste such as vegetable peelings and scraps.[16] The band also worked with venues to establish recycling programs, replace single-use water bottles with alternatives such as the Ball aluminium cups, include refill stations, introduce aerated taps, lower flushing toilets and reduce water pressure.[16]
Fans and accessibility
Coldplay partnered with SAP to develop a free mobile application for the tour which calculated the total carbon footprint generated by concert goers and encouraged them to take environmentally friendly travel options.[19] Fans who committed to the effort were given a discount code on their merchandise store.[19] Partners and vendors were carefully selected to provide high quality products made from natural fibres and re-usable elements, which were then packaged in recycled paper, card or compostable bags.[16] Additionally, the band incorporated kinetic floors and stationary bicycles in venues to power the C-stage and further interact with attendees.[20] They provided bass-delivering vests from SubPac and two sign language interpreters for concert goers with hearing loss as well,[21] while guests who are blind or have low vision were offered a designated platform and touch tours before each show.[22] In May 2022, the band announced Infinity Tickets, a limited set of $20 admissions for fans who could not afford standard prices.[b]
Partnerships
In May 2022, The Times revealed Coldplay donated over £2.1 million to environmental causes through J Van Mars Foundation during the previous year.[24] Aside from teaming up with One Tree Planted, the band continued their partnership with ClientEarth, to which they have been patrons since 2010.[25] Support to the Ocean Cleanup was declared as well, as they sponsored two watercrafts to collect plastic from polluted rivers before it reaches the sea in Malaysia.[26] Other organizations endorsed by Coldplay include Global Citizen,[27] The Food Forest Project,[28] Sea Shepherd UK,[29] Project Seagrass,[30] Seafields,[31] My Trees Trust,[32] Farm Under the Radar,[33] Project Quercus,[34] Sustainable Food Trust,[34] Global Tech Advocates,[35] Knowledge Pele,[36] Climeworks,[37] Cleaner Seas Group,[38] Conservation Collective and the Devon Environment Foundation,[39] which have all assisted them to reach the tour's goal. Additionally, Imperial College London's Grantham Institute helped the band to study and publish their progress.[40] In July 2022, DHL announced they would become Coldplay's freight partner due to the company's extensive "expertise and investment in sustainable logistics" and transport solutions.[41]
Opening acts
American singer H.E.R. was the band's most frequent supporting act throughout the tour, opening for them in all dates from Costa Rica (with Mish Catt),[42] Dominican Republic (with La Marimba),[43] and Argentina (with Zoe Gotusso).[c] In the first North American leg, she paired with a different act for each city: Leila Pari (Dallas), Alaina Castillo (Houston), Kacy Hill (Glendale), Bobby Gonz (Santa Clara), Drama (Chicago), Shaed (Landover), Bea Miller (East Rutherford), Lizzy McAlpine (Philadelphia), Mariah the Scientist (Atlanta) and Gigi (Tampa).[45] For the second run in the region, however, she will be accompanied by 070 Shake in all concerts.[46] H.E.R. also guested at select European dates in 2022, being replaced by London Grammar when not available.[47] They partnered with Alli Neumann in Germany;[d] Mery Spolsky in Poland; Gaumar in France; Lous and the Yakuza in France and Belgium; and Nina Nesbitt in Scotland.[47] Meanwhile, the performances at Wembley Stadium saw Griff, Ibibio Sound Machine and Laura Mvula as the second openers.[47]
Mexico was the only country where the shows were exclusively supported by national acts: Carla Morrison said she "cried for the entire day" when the contract was settled and felt more excited than when she won her Latin Grammy Awards.[49] Similarly, DannyLux mentioned the experience was "somewhat of a crazy dream" and he felt nervous about the public at first, as "they just see this random kid opening up with a different style of music", but the attendees responded well.[50] In September 2022, Camila Cabello guested in Peru (with Andrea Martinez), Colombia (with Mabiland) and Chile (with Princesa Alba).[51] H.E.R. was originally going to support Coldplay again for the concerts in Brazil, but she got replaced by Chvrches after the tour was postponed.[52] The latter band were accompanied by Elana Dara in São Paulo, while duo Clara x Sofia took over in Curitiba and Rio de Janeiro.[52] Opening acts for the second European leg were announced on 5 April 2023: Griff was partnered with Bárbara Bandeira (Coimbra), Caroline Alves (Zürich), Jada (Copenhagen), Luciia (Gothenburg) and Zoë Tauran (Amsterdam), whereas Chvrches will perform alongside Hinds (Barcelona), Ona Mafalda (Barcelona), Porij (Manchester), Hana Lili (Cardiff), Laila al Habash (Naples) and Mara Sattei (Milan).[53] Moreover, the band invited Australian singers Thelma Plum, Amy Shark and Tash Sultana for the concerts at Perth's Optus Stadium, while Asian dates opening acts are yet to be announced.[54]
Commercial performance
Ticket sales
Pitchfork named the Music of the Spheres World Tour one of the most anticipated concert runs of 2022.[55] Sales for the European leg were opened on 22 October 2021 and Coldplay sold over a million tickets throughout the day in the region according to Billboard.[56] Due to high demand, they added a fifth and a sixth date at Wembley Stadium.[57] Four days later, extra shows were announced at King Baudouin Stadium and Stade de France, with Fnac reporting the band sold over 200,000 tickets in record time at the latter venue.[58] General sales for Argentina opened on 9 December 2021 and they added three performances at Estadio River Plate in the following hours to support the demand, which included selling over 200,000 tickets in less than 17 hours.[59] On the next day, the country's media outlets stated all shows were officially sold out.[60] Coldplay later scheduled six more dates at the venue and they also sold out.[61] In August 2022, it was reported four million admissions were bought around the world.[62]
According to Manchester Evening News, over 400,000 people had attempted to acquire tickets for the shows at Etihad Stadium.[63] Similarly, more than 312,000 buyers were waiting at Principality Stadium's virtual line.[64] The extremely high demand caused the British Ticketmaster website to crash.[64] Sales at Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys were the fastest in Spain's history.[65] A presale held on the previous day saw 80,000 customers trying to enter the Spanish Ticketmaster website at the same time, leading to another crash.[65] Over 700,000 people tried to buy admissions at Johan Cruyff Arena.[66] In total, 1.4 million tickets were bought in 24 hours for the second European run,[67] marking the fastest sales ever by a group and the biggest since Robbie Williams' Close Encounters Tour in 2005.[68]
In December 2022, Billboard attested that, despite reporting data from only 40 out of 64 shows performed, Coldplay had the most successful tour of the year by a group.[69] When missing numbers were published, it was revealed the Music of the Spheres World Tour was actually the biggest concert run of 2022 overall, earning $342.1 million from 3.8 million tickets.[70] The band also earned the highest-grossing tour of Latin America's history ($193.3 million from 2.3 million admissions) and reached $1.4 billion in career gross.[71] Following the announcement of the second North American leg, IQ affirmed worldwide ticket purchases had already surpassed the six million mark.[72]
Presales for the show at Optus Stadium registered the biggest demand of all time on Ticketmaster Australia, with more than 300,000 customers trying to buy admissions.[73] Coldplay scheduled a second performance in response.[73] On the following day, the band broke their own record during general public sales, as over 365,000 people were in the virtual queue to get tickets.[74] Berita Harian mentioned the performance scheduled at Bukit Jalil National Stadium had 400,000 buyers entering GoLive Asia's website simultaneously, the most in history for the company.[75] Servers did not crashed, but traffic flow was slowed down.[76] On 17 May 2023, presales for Jakarta's Gelora Bung Karno Stadium concert saw more than 1.5 million people attempting to secure admissions.[77] Two days later, the record was extended to 1.7 million.[78] Loket considered the occurrence a "ticket war".[77]

Critical reception
North America
The tour received widespread acclaim from music critics worldwide.[e] Andrew Chamings from San Francisco Chronicle affirmed despite his "cynicism, Coldplay's show was a joyous, bright, cathartic post-pandemic triumph".[112] Writing for Houston Press, Marco Torres said it "felt like a beautiful dream, with balloons flying around, confetti bursting from air cannons and lasers shooting from the stage through the smoke" as the band played, adding it was one of the best performances he had ever experienced.[113] Similarly, Mac Engel from Fort Worth Star-Telegram commented "Martin showed all of the skills that make him one of the top pop performers of his generation" by making Cotton Bowl "feel intimate with a powerful set".[114] NJ.com's Katie Kausch stated the MetLife Stadium concerts were "pure fun" and the songs are "good enough to stand on their own" even without special effects.[115] Selena Fragassi called the tour a "powerful mix of art and science" that "set the bar for what arena tours of the future could look like" in her review for Chicago Sun-Times.[116] Christopher A. Daniel from The Atlanta Journal-Constitution lauded the production value and mentioned it is "reminiscent of the art rock foundation paved by bands like Genesis, Kraftwerk and Pink Floyd", concluding Coldplay's brand of melodic songs and ability to please a crowd will sustain them as a "must-see legendary act".[117]
Europe
Regioactive's Torsten Reitz said they were "full of energy and much more powerful than on record" in Frankfurt, mastering both "driving, pulsating beats" and "quiet moments" while proving "why they rightly belong to the biggest live bands of today".[118] Writing about the Stade de France performances for Virgin Radio, Marine Pineau praised the band's sense of showmanship and stated they "lived up to [their] reputation" as a live act by "offering one of the most beautiful concerts of the year" while also "changing the rules of the game" with their sustainability efforts.[119] In a five-star review for The Guardian, Alexis Petridis commented the tour's Wembley Stadium run was "a genuinely immersive experience", adding its namesake album gained depth with Coldplay's inventive approach.[120] Kate Solomon of The Times called it a "triumphant homecoming", as the band are "tight and lithe all at once" with "guitars slaloming around Martin's thundering piano and keening falsetto", giving the performances 4/5 stars.[121] With the same rating, The Telegraph's Neil McCormick claimed they are "modern masters of stadium entertainment" and have the ability "to transmit joy through the power of song" as "the most special effect of all".[122] Similarly, Hannah Mylrea wrote in NME's five-star review that Coldplay offered a "masterclass in how a massive pop show can be done" while also maintaining things "intimate and political".[123]
Rock in Rio
Felipe Branco Cruz from Veja stated the band "reinvented the concept of arena rock" with their performance at Rock in Rio festival, turning fans into the show's protagonists instead of mere spectators and consequently carrying on the legacy of spectacles "which transcend music" that was established by groups such as Pink Floyd, Queen and U2.[124] Writing for UOL, Yolanda Reis said it is undeniable they are "true showmen", describing the night as "unique and unforgettable".[125] Folha de São Paulo's Carlos Albuquerque affirmed Coldplay had exhibited "nearly two hours of delicious escapism" and effortlessly took advantage of everything at their disposal on stage.[126] Ana Raquel Lelles praised them for keeping the audience excited with a "masterful" repertory despite the rainstorm in her review for Estado de Minas.[127] Julio Maria from Estadão commented the band reached a "higher level of spectacle" and, while "Paradise" was the "first great catharsis", the curve "continued to climb" throughout the concert.[128]
Latin America
Writing for El Comercio, Juan Carlos Fangacio Arakaki mentioned Coldplay were "impeccable", delivering a complete and diverse set list in a show which "never let down".[129] CNN Chile's Pablo Figueroa said the band showcased "confidence, strength and respect for their audience", becoming "protagonists in one of the most exciting musical moments" of the country since the transition to democracy.[130] Marcelo Fernández Bitar from Clarín emphasised Martin's charisma, his bandmates' solidity and the band's connection with the public, adding the performance reaffirmed the passion evoked by their songs.[131] Similarly, an editorial by Infobae praised Coldplay for being "versatile" and "synchronised" in a concert that ranged from "the most subtle" to "the most grand".[132] In his review for La Nación, Mauro Apicella commented they managed to be in the vanguard of stadium technology with good and simple ideas which never leaves out the audience and have songs that "became classics".[133] Omelete's Caio Coletti stated that Guy Berryman's bass is "irresistibly propulsive", Martin's uncoordinated dancing "at this point is already a trademark" and Will Champion proved to be a good vocalist by guiding the "Viva la Vida" chants.[134] He also lauded them for giving a highly sensorial performance and understanding how the night of the show "is all about entertaining fans and finding new ways to elevate their experience".[134]
Accolades
Brazilian news outlets Folha de São Paulo,[135] G1,[136] O Globo,[137] and UOL have all ranked Coldplay's performance among the best of Rock in Rio 2022.[138] Billboard additionally listed the inflatable spheres technology used on the stage among the best concert special effects of the year.[139]

In September 2022, the band announced a global broadcast of their 28 October performance at Estadio River Plate in partnership with Trafalgar Releasing, the company responsible for premiering Coldplay: A Head Full of Dreams in 2018.[145] The event was directed by Paul Dugdale and repeat screenings of the footage were made available on the following day, becoming the first ever worldwide event to be transmitted from Latin America.[145] Boxoffice Pro reported the concert was held in cinemas from 81 countries, the most in history for a live theatrical release.[146] It also grossed over $8.4 million in total,[147] reaching number one in the box office charts of Argentina, Chile, Mexico and the Netherlands;[146] number two in Brazil;[148] number three in the United Kingdom;[149] number six in Italy;[150] and number 10 in Australia.[151] IndieWire commented the broadcast would reached number nine in the United States if "non-movies" were counted, as it grossed over $1 million from 833 theaters in the two days of exhibition.[152]
Final version
Described as the "definitive director's cut" of the transmission, Coldplay – Music of the Spheres: Live at River Plate was announced in March 2023.[153] The concert film featured visuals captured using 30 cameras, racing drones and 360-degree filming techniques plus remixed and remastered sound.[154] An exclusive behind-the-scenes band interview and guest appearances from H.E.R. and BTS' Jin were included as well.[155] Screenings were held on 19 and 23 April with ScreenX, 4DX and 4DX Screen presentations being available in addition to standard cinema formatting.[154] In anticipation for the premiere, the full performance of "A Sky Full of Stars" was released on YouTube.[156] Federico Vascotto from Italian news website Movieplayer rated the film with three and a half stars out of five, calling it a "psychedelic", "hyper-dynamic" and "breathtaking" experience which "will turn heads in the cinema".[157] Conversely, he pointed out the behind-the-scenes segment could have been more detailed and interesting, as much content "was left between the lines".[157] This project was the first to be launched by Infinity Station Films, the band's own production company.[158]
Legacy
Music industry response
According to Le Soir, the ecological plan proposed by Coldplay was "unprecedented" for a stadium tour.[159] Similarly, Impact credited the group with "redefining the rulebook" for eco-friendly touring and putting "environmental issues and climate change at the helm of international music news".[160] Live Nation's sustainability director, Lucy August-Perna, stated they helped to "build on the framework [the company] had been developing over the past five years".[161] She also mentioned "working with Coldplay to adopt their plans" and further standardise their best practices in order to bring sustainable touring options for more artists.[161] Vogue Scandinavia affirmed the concert run "sets the bar for how every artist, and fans, can contribute to reducing their CO2 emissions", since the "efforts into creating the most sustainable show on the market" accompanied by the "transparency on the reality that no tour will be carbon negative in 2022" is something that "speaks louder than words".[162] Uproxx and Billboard later noticed the band's impact on Billie Eilish's Happier Than Ever, The World Tour and Shawn Mendes' Wonder: The World Tour, respectively.[163] Additionally, Veja noted the "residencies" in each city further signaled a trend previously seen with Adele and Harry Styles, where musicians who can attract "huge crowds" travel less due to increased interest in logistics, quality of life and mental health.[164]
Their work with John Wiseman (from Worldwide Sales) and Frederic Opsomer (from PRG Projects) resulted in completely new LED stage products, including inflatable orbs which "dramatically" reduced the necessary space to store and transport regular three-dimensional spheres models.[165] Opsomer commented the custom technology created for the tour is set to become "commonplace in a few years" in the entertainment industry as well, adding the band were "valuable partners in the process", since they "took the chance and had the vision" for it.[165] Conversely, Transport & Environment condemned Coldplay's collaboration with Neste and claimed the company was using them to greenwash its reputation, while SumOfUs criticised their ties with BMW.[166] On the same day, an official statement reiterated "When we announced this tour, we said that we would try our best [...], but that it would be a work in progress. That remains true. We don't claim to have got it all right yet.[167] They also mentioned having no connection to BMW's corporate policies and being "genuinely welcome" to suggestions on "how to do it better".[167] Meanwhile, Neste reported investigations were conducted to verify whether or not its suppliers were linked to deforestation, but no evidence was found, concluding "conventional palm oil or other virgin vegetable oils were not used as raw materials" for the aviation biofuels supplied to the tour.[168]
Cultural impact
Numerous internet memes went viral on social media due to the band's unusually long stay in Mexico.[169] They were mostly consisted of portraying each member taking part in the country's everyday life.[169] Songs from their catalogue experienced a resurgence on streaming platforms as well, consequently reaching new peaks on Billboard Global 200.[170] The three shows held in Berlin attracted local press attention for generating microearthquakes during "A Sky Full of Stars", with the highest magnitude (1.5) being documented on 12 July 2022.[171] According to The Times, the concert run "marked a significant shift in attitude towards this once widely maligned band", since even "the most cynical hacks" were converted by their "unmatchable" live performances.[172] Furthermore, Coldplay's "dedication to the stadium spectacle is regaining them respect and credibility in all quarters".[172] Rolling Stone published limited issues of the magazine in Argentina,[173] France,[174] and Brazil to celebrate the tour.[175] The latter country reported a "Coldplaymania", as the band were subject to intense media scrutiny,[175] specially when Martin gave Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva a guitar.[176] Councillors of the Municipal Chamber of Rio de Janeiro proposed giving them the Pedro Ernesto Medal, but the motion has yet to be voted.[177] In Portugal, high demand for the concerts led the group to be compared to the Beatles as "a global phenomenon which only happens once every 30 years".[178] Blitz held a limited photograph exhibit in Coimbra to mark their return to the country.[179]
Economic influence
Hotels with a view of Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica became fully booked after the shows were sold out, as people began to search for different ways to attend.[180] The government of Argentina created a US dollar exchange rate for live events which became known as the "Coldplay dollar", referencing their record-breaking run at Estadio River Plate.[181] Clarín credited the band with triplicating revenue for bars and restaurants in Buenos Aires.[182] Similarly, business owners from Curitiba have compared the impact of their visit to the 2014 FIFA World Cup,[183] while Rio de Janeiro's Economic Development Secretariat estimated the tour moved over R$86 million in profits for the city, considering average expenses with tickets, food and transportation.[184] Accommodation prices in Coimbra increased by more than 1,000% after Coldplay scheduled performances there.[185] Moreover, the President of the Municipal Chamber reported their visit is expected to generate nearly €100 million in economic returns.[99]
High demand for the concerts also caused ticket speculation cases to rise across Portugal, which ultimately led to 32 arrests.[186] In Spain, the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) submitted a request to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs to further "control and reduce" resales with abusive prices and poor guarantees.[187] Marketing agency Hello Monday launched a social media campaign in which contenders could receive admissions for the Barcelona dates and earned over 80,000 new followers across their platforms plus a million comments.[187] According to CNBC Indonesia, Bank Central Asia's stock exchange value experienced a surge after it was announced their credit card holders would have exclusive access to the presales for the show in Jakarta.[188] New Straits Times commented the government of Malaysia will enact new legislation "to monitor and control activities pertaining to ticket scalpers", as various Kuala Lumpur resales had "exorbitant prices".[189] Fahmi Fadzil stated investigations of these cases are helping with the initial drafts.[189]
Philanthropy
In addition to donating 10% from all of their profits to charity,[190] Coldplay partnered with Global Citizen and the Love Button Global Movement to gather volunteers in each tour stop and provide support to the individual missions of numerous local non-profit institutions, which included distributing food, creating gardens and providing shelter for refugees.[191]
