The 2023 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup will be the 13th edition of the Cricket World Cup, a quadrennial One Day International (ODI) cricket tournament contested by 10 teams and organized by the International Cricket Council (ICC). It is scheduled to be hosted by India with the tournament running from 5 October to 19 November 2023,[1] though the ICC previously announced that the final would be on 26 November.[2] It will be the first time the competition is held entirely in India; three previous editions were partially hosted there – 1987, 1996, and 2011.

Originally, the tournament was scheduled to be played from 9 February to 26 March 2023;[3][4] but in July 2020 it was announced that the tournament would be delayed to an October–November window,[5] following the disruption of the qualification schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[2]This will be the first time that ICC delayed the announcement of the Schedule for 2023 Cricket World Cup. While The schedule for the 2019 ODI World Cup in England and Wales was released on April 26, 2018, 13 months before the opening game, while the schedule for the 2015 tournament in Australia and New Zealand was released on July 30, 2013 - a full 18 months before the first match.

England are the defending champions, having won the previous edition in 2019, defeating New Zealand in the final. This will be the last time the tournament has only 10 teams; an increase to 14 teams is planned for the 2027 tournament.

Background

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had threatened to boycott the 2023 World Cup in India after host BCCI had refused to send its team to the 2023 Asia Cup scheduled in Pakistan.[6][7] However, in March 2023 a resolution was brokered.[8] However, PCB chairman Najam Sethi expressed his unwillingness to play any group league matches at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad except the knockout matches, subject to clearance from the government of Pakistan. He also wished to have all their matches played in Bengaluru, Chennai or Kolkata.[9]

Qualification

The tournament will feature ten teams, like the previous edition. The main route for qualification will be the 2020–2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Super League tournament.[10]

The top seven sides plus the hosts (India) from the thirteen competitors in the Super League will qualify for the World Cup. The remaining five teams, along with five Associate sides, will play in the 2023 Cricket World Cup Qualifier, from which two teams will go through to the final tournament.[11][12]

Controversies

Pakistan Cricket Board had threatened to boycott the 2023 Cricket World Cup if India Didn't participate in Asia cup 2023. The chairman of Pakistan’s Cricket Board is demanding his side’s World Cup games are moved out of host country India if their arch rivals refuse to travel to Pakistan for September’s Asia Cup.

There is a “very real possibility” that Pakistan will boycott 2023 cricket World Cup in India if they lose hosting rights to the Asia Cup, the chairman of the country’s cricket board Najam Sethi told Reuters. India, citing safety concerns, have ruled out travelling to Pakistan for the Asia Cup in September and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has offered to let them play their matches in the United Arab Emirates in what has been dubbed a “hybrid model”

While the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has yet to deliver a formal response to the offer, Sethi said India wanted the entire tournament moved out of Pakistan.

That could have serious ramifications for the 50-overs World Cup in India this year as well as the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan
