"Beautiful Liar" is a latin pop song, recorded by American singer Beyoncé and Colombian singer Shakira. The song was written by Amanda Ghost, Ian Dench, and Norwegian songwriters Mikkel S. Eriksen and Tor Erik Hermansen, and was the first single from the deluxe rerelease of Beyoncé's second studio album B’Day, making it the fifth song (fourth internationally) released from B'Day overall. The song was produced by production team Stargate and Beyoncé. It has versions in Spanish and English.
Song infomation
Beyoncé has stated that the song is about female empowerment, keeping with the theme of the album. The protagonists sing about being charmed by the same man. Instead of fighting over him, they decide not to start a drama or waste their time.
The original Spanglish version featured Beyoncé singing solo, and this leaked onto the internet in late 2006. However the duet version was recorded (in separate languages for the two different language versions) on January 23, 2007 in Miami. By February 27, 2007 it had leaked onto the Internet. The single started playing on the radio just after the video was premiered on MTV's Total Request Live and BET's 106 and Park on Wednesday, February 28, 2007. It premiered on the same day as Beyoncé's other single, "Upgrade U".
The duet had been confirmed by Beyoncé in an interview with Univision in December 2006.[1] In an MTV interview she described how she had met Shakira several times at various awards shows over recent years. After recording the Latin-themed song solo, Beyonce approached her to appear on it. Shakira willingly accepted, citing mutual respect for Beyonce.
Music video
The video was helmed by Jake Nava, who directed several other Beyoncé videos such as "Crazy in Love", "Baby Boy", "Naughty Girl", and Destiny's Child's "Cater 2 U".
At the start of the video the women's faces are masked behind smoke. As the video progresses they are featured against several different backgrounds, including: a sunrise (Beyoncé) and sunset (Shakira); sheets blown in the wind; bamboo covered in yellow orchids; a room with blue neon lighting and Arabic writing on the walls; and finally a background of stormy weather. Slow dance moves and Turkish belly dancing are featured heavily throughout the video, with a breakdown containing Arabic-style dance moves after the bridge. The women wear matching hairstyles and black dresses for the entirety of video.
The video premiered on February 28, 2007 (the same day as the video for "Upgrade U") on 106 & Park and on TRL. The next day, the video debuted on TRL's countdown at number six,[2] and the video later reached number one on the countdown.[3]
The music video for the song will be released on Beyoncé's B'Day Anthology Video Album.
The video has since been at number 1 for 3 days in a row on the UK music channel ¨The Box¨ on the daily show Box Breakers which is a chart of the most selected videos each day.
