"Overdrive" is a song by American rapper and singer Post Malone. It was released through Republic and Mercury Records as the third and final single from his upcoming self-titled fifth studio album, Austin, on July 14, 2023. The song was produced by Malone himself, Andrew Watt, and Louis Bell, and the three wrote it alongside Billy Walsh. Malone previewed the song two days before its release in a video that saw him detailing the recording process of the album.[1] He also performed the song live as part of Vevo's live performances segment on the same day that it was released, in which he sang in a retro-influenced living room and moved around as he was lying down on a orange couch and covering his eyes.[2]
Composition and lyrics
"Overdrive" is a rock and jangle pop song in which the acoustic guitar melody that was played by Malone himself is reminiscent of American indie rock band Real Estate's music and sees him sing about how he lives his life fast.[3][4] Lyrically, the song is about his thoughts on how he could make his life easier for him and his family over an intense percussive beat: "I spend my nights on overdrive / I live my life so uninspired / There ain't no angels in this world / So I live my life on overdrive".[5] It is generally soft and is set at a midtempo that is another song that sees Malone shift away from making hip hop music, which he originally rose to fame from, as he sings: "I'll remove my tattoos if that's cool to you / I'll do anything to be cool to you" over a soft rock-influenced pop tune.[6] It is also built from basic piano chords, guitar strums, and an occasional orchestral arrangement with chord progression changes and lyrical themes.[7]
