Deaf Queer Men Only (DQMO) is an international biennial conference for Deaf queer men.[1] DQMO was founded in San Francisco in 2008 and six cities in three countries have hosted DQMO conferences.[2] The mission of DQMO is to "provide a nurturing space for multicultural Deaf queer men to gather, build networks, share emotional support, and expand knowledge about civil rights, health, leadership and multicultural identities."[3][4]
Every DQMO since 2008 has featured both social events in local queer establishments and workshops on topics such as Deaf queer identity, leadership in American Sign Language, and sexual health.[1]
History
The Deaf Lesbian Festival helped inspire the creation of DQMO.[5] The inaugural DQMO in San Francisco in 2008 featured workshops, social events, and a "Cum Out" welcome party as well as a "Wipe Off" closing ceremony, preceded by an announcement that the host committee was "hard" at work planning the event.[6] This sense of humor has remained throughout DQMO conferences, including in 2018's "Blue Ball" gala.
Attendance was 86 in 2008, 106 in 2010, and several hundred at every DQMO after then.[1]
