Josh "Bagel" Klassman is an American documentary street photographer and surfer who grew up in Venice Beach, California in the 1970s and 1980s.[2] He attended Venice High School where he studied photography under early mentor Larry Shapiro. From then on, Klassman began documenting his own immediate surroundings, the timelessly authentic Venice Beach cultures he was involved with; surfing, skateboarding and street art. He was not only an observer, he was a participant, allowing him unrestricted access to his subject matter. [3]
A large volume of Klassmans historical images work were captured between the mid-80's until the mid-90s.[4] His analog 35mm film photographs have have appeared at Hou Yee Chan Gallery, the C.A.V.E. Gallery and Ignition Creative and were featured in the 2016 documentary "Made In Venice" directed by Jonathan Penson. In 2018, his photo book "It Wuz All A Beautiful Disaster" was released by Beyond The Streets publishing.[5][6]
Early Life and Career
As a young child, Klassman played with Instamatic cameras until his mother bought him the Nikon he still uses to this day. “These photos sat for like 30 years before people started recognizing them as meaning something. I didn’t even want to be a skate photographer – my friends were just some of the best skaters at the time.”
Klassman, whose nickname “Bagel” has stuck with him even though it originally was a not-so-nice nod to his Jewish heritage, said that he appreciates how people have taken to these unintentional works of art. [7]
