Expansion Project
I'm making it a project of mine to greatly expand this article. I consider this an important topic, as FTTH becomes more prevalent in the land of residential internet, and an important starting point for hackers like myself. I have just finished the first edit, in which I've just reshaped what's already there, before I begin in earnest.
I will use the original documents G.984.1, G.984.2, and G.984.3 to cover the following topics:
- physical medium (recommended fibre types, current lack of wavelength and connector standardisation)
- interpretation of optical signal as contiguous binary sequence(s)
- packetisation of primary contiguous binary sequence into GTC frames, GEM frames, and finally user data frames (typically ethernet frames)
- downstream GTC frames vs upstream T-CONT bursts
- authentication
- encryption, possible attacks
I have already read a bit of these documents, which was the source of this basic outline.
I will use other references to write a section on GPON in the real world. I'll be starting with some interesting forum stuff, but obviously something less . . . ephemeral would be nice.
For now, I'm not considering a section on topology, as it's basically the same as any other PON.
I would value the input from anybody whose input I would value. ;) But seriously, this is my way of learning about fibre optics technology, and I'd like to hear from somebody who has knowledge or experience with this technology.
From those who write and edit a lot of Wikipedia content, I would value your input as well. So far, I think I'm doing all right, following Wikipedia's docs.
