The 2023 Cleveland Guardians season is the 123rd season for the franchise, which competes in the American League of Major League Baseball (MLB). This is the franchise's second season using the "Guardians" nickname, and 11th season under manager Terry Francona, the longest-tenured manager in MLB entering the 2023 season.[1] They entered the season as the defending AL Central champions. The team opened the regular season on March 30, losing on the road against the Seattle Mariners, and is scheduled to conclude the regular season on October 1, on the road against the Detroit Tigers.

Offseason

Rule changes

Pursuant to the CBA, new rule changes will be in place for the 2023 season:[2]

  • institution of a pitch clock between pitches;
  • limits on pickoff attempts per plate appearance;
  • limits on defensive shifts requiring two infielders to be on either side of second and be within the boundary of the infield; and
  • larger bases (increased to 18-inch squares);
