Information icon Please do not add inappropriate external links to Wikipedia, as you did to 360 photography. Wikipedia is not a collection of links, nor should it be used for advertising or promotion. Inappropriate links include, but are not limited to, links to personal websites, links to websites with which you are affiliated (whether as a link in article text, or a citation in an article), and links that attract visitors to a website or promote a product. See the external links guideline and spam guideline for further explanations. Because Wikipedia uses the nofollow attribute value, its external links are disregarded by most search engines. If you feel the link should be added to the page, please discuss it on the associated talk page rather than re-adding it. Thank you. Melcous (talk) 23:03, 5 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Conflict of interest policy

[edit]

Information icon Hello, Karldmartini. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. In particular, please:

  • avoid editing or creating articles related to you and your circle, your organization, its competitors, projects or products;
  • instead propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (see the {{request edit}} template);
  • when discussing affected articles, disclose your COI (see WP:DISCLOSE);
  • avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
  • exercise great caution so that you do not violate Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).

Please familiarize yourself with relevant policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, sourcing and autobiographies. Thank you. --Ronz (talk) 17:20, 15 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Please stop adding inappropriate external links to Wikipedia, as you did to Christian Louboutin. It is considered spamming and Wikipedia is not a vehicle for advertising or promotion. Because Wikipedia uses nofollow tags, additions of links to Wikipedia will not alter search engine rankings. If you continue spamming, you may be blocked from editing Wikipedia. April 2019

[edit]

Information icon Hello, I'm JSFarman. I wanted to let you know that one or more of your recent contributions have been undone because they appeared to be promotional. Advertising and using Wikipedia as a "soapbox" are against Wikipedia policy and not permitted; Wikipedia articles should be written objectively, using independent sources, and from a neutral perspective. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about Wikipedia. Thank you. JSFarman (talk) 20:56, 29 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with this assessment, and have removed your animation from the page. Please could you show us where the consensus you mentioned at JSFarman herewas formed before I remove all your other animations? Thanks. -Roxy, the dog. wooF 10:36, 15 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Roxy, Please hold off on removing all my animations which have been added over a number of years and appear to be valued by the community as they have been added to other language Wiki pages by other editors. I will have to track down where the consensus was reached as it was quite a while ago and Wikipedia talk pages are rather difficult to navigate (for me) so it will take time. Let me explain what I do and also why this is not advertising: I am a photographer/animator. Once I have produced these animations I put them on my website to showcase my skills. You can Google 'Karl Martini' to find me. Once they are on my website, I have no further need for them so sometimes I add them to the creative commons and Wiki pages. The important thing to note is that I have NEVER added an animation to a wiki page of any client I have worked with. This is for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the client would own the copyright, not me. Secondly, if I were to do-so it would enter the realm of advertising or promotion as I would already have a relationship with the company in question. The animations that are already up on pages for various brand's wiki pages were added by me and me alone without the knowledge or encouragement of the brands in question. Now in terms of proving this...it would be asking me to prove a negative which is impossible. How do you prove to your suspicious wife that you are NOT having an affair? I had this same discussion with a previous mod and this seemed to settle the issue. I will try to dig this out myself or perhaps you can find it easily. It is on a talk page somewhere. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Karldmartini (talkcontribs) 12:19, 15 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Please explain your relationship to www.karlmartini.com. Roxy, the dog. wooF 14:11, 15 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry I appear to have added this Guy Macon below so here it is again: It is the website for my photography studio. I own it. You will see some of the demos I have used on there that I have added to wiki pages (as I explained). What you will not find are any animations that appear on client websites that also appear in any Wiki pages because of conflict of interest. As stated, I have nothing to do with any of the brands wiki pages that I edit--Karldmartini (talk) 17:52, 15 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry it appears I was answering the question from Roxy the dog above. In answer to your question. To disclose my affiliation to the companies I have edited....Zero. Nothing. They have no idea I exist. I did not know there was a 'Propose changes' method. I shall use this from now on.--Karldmartini (talk) 17:51, 15 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see any problem with you selling your cool 3D spinning animations of some products to the companies that make those products while at the same time donating cool 3D spinning animations of other products to Wikipedia. In fact I think it's great -- giving us something that very few of us could create on our own. I do see a problem with you then adding those cool 3D spinning animations to Wikipedia articles. Perhaps you should consider instead posting a comment on the article talk page (you can show the animation in the comment) and asking whether the other editors think it improves the article. This avoids you deciding whether your own work is an improvement to the article. --Guy Macon (talk) 22:18, 15 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I think you are right Guy. I was not aware there was a request system in place. So I will do this from now on. I would ask that the existing animations that are in place are left as-is. Some of them have been there years and have even been added to the different translations of the same pages by other editors. --Karldmartini (talk) 10:49, 16 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I think that the animations should go, they are an awful distraction from the articles they pollute. It appears to be impossible to stop them moving for goodness sake. I have also responded at Brookes. -Roxy, the dog. wooF 16:13, 16 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Roxy, I have removed the URL to my website on my profile so you can't accuse me of promotion now. If they were a distraction like you say, why do they survive for so long on the various pages? I think there needs to be a consensus and we need many opinions to reach one. Regarding the distraction issue...I can make a tiny video and use that. At least that will stop after it completes. Do let me know.--Karldmartini (talk) 16:28, 16 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Please stop adding animations. I reverted diff + diff because the animations are distracting and are indistinguishable from promotions. Material like that is not the purpose of an encyclopedic article. Johnuniq (talk) 22:46, 18 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to apologise for my over aggressive comments in this page, above. Let me just say that I don't like the animations because of the distraction. At the time of the discussions above, when I assessed what I had said, I thought it was probably wise to drop the subject. Shrug. I'll probably look again in the morning. It's late. -Roxy, the dog. wooF 00:05, 19 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. So I will address both Roxy the Dog and ‪Johnuniq‬ here. Firstly, ‪Johnuniq‬...I have proved to many folks that I have no affiliation with the companies in question when I add animations. I would ask him to show me where the Wikipedia guidelines state that being 'indistinguishable from promotions' is the same as actual promotions? If my failing is to submit content that appears to be produced by the brand (and thusly promotion) I think it is unfair that my contributions are being removed because of excess quality. I do take pride in things like lighting. Also...you removed a previous contribution for Dolce & Gabbana that I added months ago, using the same justification. Having my previous contributions pulled from pages where they happily sat for a long time seems punitive in my view and sends a negative message to future contributors. Please let me know your thoughts Johnuniq. Roxy the dog...perhaps you may have a point. To some, these animations may be distracting, especially when they spin endlessly. I have found a way to have them stop after a certain amount of cycles. The Tumi animation stopped after 2 cycles but it was pulled before anyone noticed. So whats the next step? I don't want to get in a silly edit war so I will leave it for tonight. Can I ask Johnuniq to reinstate my contributions after considering my points? (talk)
Sorry but people who regularly edit here are aware that most casual edits are reverted or otherwise changed beyond recognition. Someone's motivations are not relevant to the question of whether an image looks like an advert rather than an item of encyclopedic value. An example of a useful animation is File:ADN animation.gif which shows the double helix of DNA. A rotating shoe should be on the manufacturer's website.
