Scorpion (real name: Hanzo Hasashi) is one of the most recognizable and famous characters from the video game series Mortal Kombat. He has appeared in every game except Special Forces and MK3. Scorpion is a spectre who travels Mortal Kombat's realms to seek respite for his soul by destroying those who killed him and his family. He is neither good nor evil, and will fight whoever gets in his way.

Scorpion is depicted as a ninja clad in yellow and black. Unmasked, Scorpion's head is a flaming skull. In Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, his fighting styles are Hapkido and Pi Gua, and his main weapon is a ninja sword. Scorpion's most famous special move is the Spear, a spearhead attached to a rope. Scorpion throws the Spear at the victim, lodges it in him/her, then pulls the victim towards him, shouting "Get over here!" (one of the most memorable lines of spoken dialogue in the Mortal Kombat series) and leaving the victim open to attack. Other attacks have included teleportation and lighting his opponent on fire. His Fatalities (gruesome final attacks) have included incinerating his opponent and yanking his opponent's head off with the Spear.

Scorpion's chronological first appearance is in Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero, where Quan Chi had hired him to find a map, in case Sub-Zero failed. When the two met, they battled until Sub-Zero defeated and decapitated him. Scorpion returned to fight Sub-Zero in the Netherealm as a vengeful spectre, but Sub-Zero escaped him. The two met for the penultimate time on Shang Tsung's boat, where Scorpion told him he would kill him in Mortal Kombat, which he did.

Scorpion followed Sub-Zero, apparently alive again, when Shao Kahn hosted Mortal Kombat in Outworld. When Sub-Zero spared the life of his opponent, Scorpion did not understand why he had grown merciful. He discovered that the new Sub-Zero was the brother of the man he had killed. Scorpion resolved to protect Sub-Zero the Younger in repentance for killing the Elder.

When Shao Kahn invaded Earthrealm, his sorcerers pulled Scorpion from the Netherealm and gave him leadership of an extermination squad. He fulfilled his duties, until he learned that Sub-Zero was defending Earthrealm, and he turned on Shao Kahn, who banished him back to the Netherealm.

Quan Chi pulled him out again, convincing him that Sub-Zero was responsible for the slaughter of his family and clan. Scorpion attacked Sub-Zero and had him at his mercy, but Quan Chi told him that he was actually the one who killed his clan before banishing him back to the Netherealm. Scorpion grabbed Quan Chi at the last second and took him with him.

Scorpion tortured Quan Chi for years, chasing him throughout the Netherealm, until Quan Chi cut a deal with the Oni Drahmin and Moloch, who fought Scorpion for him. When Quan Chi escaped the Netherealm though a portal, Scorpion followed him, and they fought outside Shang Tsung's palace. Quan Chi knocked him into the acid moat, but that did not stop Scorpion. He continued to hound Quan Chi, until Drahmin and Moloch threw him into the Soulnado, scattering his essence across the realms.

The Elder Gods gathered his essence and gave him a task: defeat Onaga, the Dragon King.
