On 13 December 2017, it was proposed that this article be moved from Theater of the United States to Theatre in the United States. The result of the discussion was moved to Theater in the United States. |
Title of this article
Shouldn't this article be titled "Theatre in the United States"?
In keeping with US tradition, the spelling theatre is used for the art and profession, of which this article is about, whilst the spelling theater is used for the actual structure that a performance is held in; ie, theatre is usually performed in a theater. Also this article is about theatre in the United States not of the United States. --121.220.51.162 (talk) 10:20, 23 February 2014 (UTC)
Requested move 13 December 2017
- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the move request was: moved to Theater in the United States. See clear consensus to 1) rename this article, and 2) use "in" rather than "of". There is also fairly strong support for "theater" instead of "theatre". Happy New Year to All! (closed by page mover) Paine Ellsworth put'r there 16:52, 3 January 2018 (UTC)
Theater of the United States → Theatre in the United States – as stated above by 121.220.51.162 in 2014 – Fayenatic London 17:46, 13 December 2017 (UTC) --Relisting. CrowCaw 22:35, 20 December 2017 (UTC) --Relisting. Steel1943 (talk) 20:55, 28 December 2017 (UTC)
- Support - Per the precedent of theatre article title. Also, "theater of the United States" makes me think "theater of war" rather than the performing arts.ZXCVBNM (TALK) 03:28, 14 December 2017 (UTC)
- Move back to original title Theater in the United States. Should never have been moved. Per WP:ENGVAR, "theater" is the usual American spelling. Station1 (talk) 02:46, 16 December 2017 (UTC)
- Only support Theater in the United States per WP:ENGVAR Red Slash 09:35, 16 December 2017 (UTC)
- Support per WP:CONSISTENCY with other articles, however, move to theater as that is the American spelling. CookieMonster755 𝚨-𝛀 04:04, 19 December 2017 (UTC)
- American English spelling is 'Theater' Randy Kryn (talk) 00:35, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
- Support: Plenty of Americans use "theatre". I was taught to use it when I was a theatre graduate-student in the US. But if we need a good outside arbiter, let's look at which spelling the NYC theatre critics. Aristophanes68 (talk) 08:27, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
- Plus, the articles on Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-Off-Broadway use -re. Aristophanes68 (talk) 08:36, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
- American English spelling is 'Theater' - no reason to change original title. "Theater" is used by The New York Times and others. Neutralitytalk 08:52, 31 December 2017 (UTC)
- Oppose both changes.
- Keep "of" to maintain consistency with Theatre of ancient Greece and Theatre of the United Kingdom. The proposal misreads the nuance of this topic, which I find hard to explain at the moment.
- Keep "theater". This is a WP:ENGVAR issue, in the absence of compelling reason to change, stick with WP:RETAIN, noting "theater" was the title in the first non-stub version[1]. --SmokeyJoe (talk) 05:07, 2 January 2018 (UTC)

Appalling lead
"Theater of the United States is based in the Western tradition. Regional or resident theaters in the United States are professional theater companies outside New York City that produce their own seasons."

- I rewrote it; how does it read now? Any suggestions for what else to add? Aristophanes68 (talk) 08:24, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
