Turner Diaries Cover

Hi, I'm looking for a first edition of the Turner Diaries and was wondering where you got the image of the first edition cover you put on the Turner Diaries page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dleve (talkcontribs) 21:51, 3 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Category:Mosques completed in 1947 requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Liz Read! Category:People from South Stoneham

Hi. I see that you have created and populated this category. It is probably misleading to say that many of these people were actually from South Stoneham as we know it today, which is a fairly small part of the present city of Southampton. For many years from the late 18th to early 20th centuries, South Stoneham was the name of the registration district which covered all of the then town of Southampton and the surrounding area. If you were to obtain their birth certificates, you would probably find that many of these people were actually born in other districts of the city. According to "All the Saints", Bill Charlton was actually born near Eastleigh and Arthur Dominey was born at Woolston. Best wishes. Daemonickangaroo2018 (talk) 14:48, 8 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I am dyslexic. "rot rirles" means "for titles" The rule I was (mistakenly) thinking about is WP:DABLINK. But it seems it does not cover the case of disambiguating "XXX (yyy)" vs "XXX (zzz)" and {{for}} says nothing either. Also, after some thinking I agree that your hatnote is useful because it makes sense a person looks for a novel, but the page Eden (disambiguation) is unwieldy. So I am self-revertinj. Lembit Staan (talk) 23:23, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I noticed a few of your edits, such as this one, where you removed a link to a "(disambiguation)" redirect in a hatnote. These are very necessary however, as described at WP:INTDAB. Would you mind reverting the other edits where you did this, and maybe also add the "(disambiguation)" part to new hatnotes you've added recently, such as here? Both Exodus and Against All Odds made it to the top 50 of the Disambiguation pages with links report, and fixing links like these on top of all the other links that need to be fixed takes a considerable amount of time and effort for editors like myself.

Also, per WP:NOTAMB, non-ambiguous titles don't actually need a hatnote at all. But this guideline is apparently not commonly adhered to these days and I guess those hatnotes don't really hurt, either, so whether to follow that one I'll leave up to you. An interesting chain of events

Thanks for this edit. I was the one who erroneously changed the caption to "Fourth edition" there, but I am very familiar with the covers of the different editions, and after looking at the history of the page and the image, I suspect what happened is that I visited the page, then shortly afterward you changed the image and the caption to the first edition, and then I visited the page soon after that change but the original image of the fourth edition was still in my browser cache, so I changed the caption to "Fourth edition" to match what I was seeing in my browser, since I didn't see that you had updated the image. Notice

The file File:Vanity Fair (September 1 1896) cover.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Redundant to File:Vanity Fair (British magazine) cover 1-1896.jpg which is hosted on Commons

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Hello!

Hi, GrahamHardy,

I don't think we've encountered each other before but I run into your work regularly now that I delete old file versions that are tagged for review by DeltaQuadBot. I don't even know how you do what you do with images but you've clearly been extremely active and productive for years. It's a less visible form of editing for those of us who stick with words, categories and managing editor feuds. But I wanted to thank you for brightening up & resizing all of those old sci-fi novel covers! I'm sure it makes the articles more attractive and appealing to readers. Liz Read! Talk! 03:14, 17 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I see that I have encountered you before when Twinkle has posted notices about Empty Categories. Another one of my daily tasks! Liz Read! Talk! 03:16, 17 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Liz, sorry for the delay in getting back to you, thankyou for your encouragement! I've noticed your name when deleting old versions of book covers, I feel a bit bad for not tidying up things behind me, sometimes there appears to be a bot tidying things up, but sometimes it's real people like yourself! If you have any particular bug-bears like that I ought really to do my fair share in leaving a wake of un-used images! but I am lazy so just like adding new images rather than just tidying things up! Apologies for all the exclamation marks in my replies, or as some people call them 'shrieks' !!!!! Anyway bye for now and apologies for my delay in responding...GrahamHardy (talk) 21:13, 23 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, it's no problem. There are days when I just want to get to my daily routine of tasks than respond to queries on my talk page.
I'm actually amazed that we have articles on so many hundreds of dime-store sci fi novels from the 1950s and 1960s, they look more sensational than notable. It might be harder to get an article on a current popular book than some of these tabloid page-turners! But I wish I knew more about how you work with images to improve them, improve the resolution, crop them or rotate them, is it a special type of software or can you do it just using what's available on the Wikipedia platform? Do you do much work on the Commons? They have so many millions of files there, if I was active there, I wouldn't even know where to start.
Thanks for the response, I hope you are getting some enjoyment in this holiday season. Here in Northwest U.S., it's all about trying to get together without exposing yourself to too much COVID-19 risk and avoiding the current winter storm we have going on. But editing on the project is rather a solitary activity that doesn't have any exposure at all! Liz Read! Talk! 02:45, 29 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Liz, Sorry again for my tardiness, For Fantasy and Sci-Fi I use isfdb, for other books I use Goodreads. If the image is small or blurry I use abebooks. If all else fails I just search Google using images. I normally just use MS-paint to reduce and crop, but if the image is wonky I use ipiccy (on the web). I have never used Commons myself, I always use 'upload file' - 'Old guided form' - 'A cover or other page'. One day I guess the gnomes will remove the 'old' option but I am a bit of a stick-in-the-mud so it works fine for me! GrahamHardy (talk) 14:34, 11 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Well, this is all new information to me, I don't know much about these image programs or sources of images. I'm just grateful that we had such a wide variety of editors willing to spend their spare time improving different aspects of the project from writing articles to improving images to copyediting to what I do, removing files and pages that are determined to be junk. Sometimes I feel like the clean-up crew. But if it helps keep what is considered important to readers and gets rid of self-promotional garbage and spam, then I feel like I'm contributing! Stay well, Liz Read! Talk! 05:35, 16 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Jelly Roll Morton: The Complete Library of Congress Recordings

Hi Graham – I'm not here to argue whether "Jelly Roll Morton" should be part of the title or not, but you've actually moved this page to Jelly Roll Morton: The Complete Library of Congress Recordingss... yes, with that extra "s" at the end of the title. I assume this was a mistake? However, it will need a requested move to correct it, because the "correct page" redirects to the current one, so it'll need a round-robin swap. Thanks. Richard3120 (talk) 00:44, 31 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

oops, Can you fix it or shall I try? GrahamHardy (talk) 10:14, 31 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The file File:AlgiersMotelIncident.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

WP:DECORATIVE non-free use in Algiers Motel incident#John Hersey book which fails WP:NFCC#8 per WP:NFC#CS and WP:NFC#cite_note-3. Non-free cover art (e.g. book covers, album covers, magazine covers) are generally acceptable when used for primary identification purposes at the top of or in the main infobox of stand-alone articles about the works they represent. Other types of non-free use or use within other types of articles typically is much harder to justify per NFCC#8 and almost always requires that the cover art itself be the subject of sourced critical commentary. There's nothing about this particular book cover in the article where it's curently be used which significantly improves the reader's understanding of the "Algiers Motel Incident" which means there's going to be no real loss of encyclopedic understanding to the reader by omitting it. Using non-free cover art simply to "illustrate" an article is almost always going to be considered a type of "decorative" non-free use that's not allowed by relevant policy.

-- Marchjuly (talk) 04:35, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Problems with upload of File:Bakacay (short story collection).jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Bakacay (short story collection).jpg. You don't seem to have said where the image came from, who created it, or provided a license tag. We require this information to verify that the image is legally usable on Wikipedia, and because most image licenses require giving credit to the image's creator.

To add this information, select the appropriate license tag from this list, click on this link, then click the "Edit" tab at the top of the page and add the information to the image's description. If you can't find a suitable license tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia. If you need help, post your question on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Cover images for 12 volumes of The History of Middle-earth

Graham, I see you're two books into replacing all 12 diverse images of the first paperback edition with 12 identical images (barring the background coloration and title text) of the first hardback edition.

I'm well aware of the general rule in favour of first editions, but I think a mistake is being made here. Hardly anybody actually owns a first hardback edition; and the covers are so dull as to be, well, instantly forgettable and practically unrecognisable. In contrast, the paperback covers are distinctive of the works they contain. I think we should preserve these, if need be with extended NFURs. I am not at all convinced that we need the hardback images at all (whether in addition or instead), usual prescription or not, as they add next to nothing.

I note also that you're overwriting images[i, paperback] with images[i, hardback] which is actually an odd move, they aren't the same thing slightly retouched to remove a bluish tinge or a dust-fleck, but wholly different images of books with different ISBNs, which I'd have thought contrary to policy really.

I'm therefore on the verge of reverting your changes, but would prefer to discuss the matter quietly first, despite the evident time pressure as the images will be bot-deleted rather soon. Looking forward to hearing from you. Chiswick Chap (talk) 17:12, 23 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Not feeling that precious, I am happy for you to put the paperback versions of The History of Middle-earth but can you add a comment on the articles so that I don't forget and replace them again? Re policy, I thought First editions were preferred, sorry for not checking the ISBNs, will take a look in future GrahamHardy (talk) 18:37, 23 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks for the helpful and speedy reply. I guess my take on Wiki-rules is always a bit Jimmy Wales, i.e. what is this rule for, how does it help, and when does it give unintended results. I think the place for one of the 12 near-identical hardback images would actually be in the parent article, The History of Middle-earth, while the book articles are better off with their paperback images. I'll revert and annotate all 12 to minimise future stress as you suggest. All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 18:46, 23 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Mind of the Maker edits

I am a former academic that came here to see if the Latin dedication appearing in that work has ever been translated in a publication (to check our own translation of it). I did some edits — both URLs were dead when I arrived, and there were various other technical problems. I do not like leaving articles heavily tagged, but I think the remaining edits need to be made by a registered editor, and there is significant work remaining to be done (WP:OR issue, mislabeled section isue, etc.). For a start, if you can find page numbers and other relevant bibliographic information for the two book references, and change the name for the section to something accurate to the content appearing (literary criticism and significance having specific meanings not captured by that section), then the section tag and even the article tag might be removed. However, apart from the one cited review, the article is poorly sourced, and even that review is poorly used, the earlier article editors relying on their own book interpretations and Sayers descriptions, rather than drawing from the review or other sources to create such content. Leaving this to you, as a regular dedicated editor there. 2601:246:C700:C:E1DD:E6DD:7781:735 (talk) 15:28, 4 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The article One Man and His Bog has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Two citations to the book itself do not an article make: fails WP:V & WP:N.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. — Fourthords | =Λ= | 14:35, 14 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Role-playing game supplements by year

OK, in the process of apparently undoing hundreds of these... do you think, if these need some sort of categorization by year, would it help to have something like "Category:Role-playing game supplements published in XX"? BOZ (talk) 00:17, 28 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks also to User:Newimpartial for undoing many of these as well. BOZ (talk) 00:44, 28 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I am honestly curious to your thoughts though, because maybe these "by year" categories are something we need. I don't want to overcategorize, but maybe I'm overthinking it instead? BOZ (talk) 22:01, 28 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Shoaib Ahmad Malik requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a real person or group of people that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Notice

The file File:SOSNovel.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-free book cover art being used in a WP:DECORATIVE manner in Joseph Connolly (author)#Novels which fails WP:NFCC#8. Non-free book cover art is generally allowed to be used for primary identification purposes at the top of or in the main infoboxes of stand-alone articles about books, but its use in other articles is generally only allowed when the cover art itself is the subject of sourced critical commentary as explained in WP:NFC#cite_note-3 and the context for non-free use required by WP:NFCC#8 is evident. There is no such commentary for this particular book cover anywhere in the article, and it appears to have been added to the article as part of a WP:BOLD of an article about S.O.S. (novel) into the "Novels" section of the Connolly article.

-- Marchjuly (talk) 07:25, 17 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
