The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon is an American post-apocalyptic horror drama television series created by David Zabel for AMC, based on The Walking Dead character of the same name. It is the fifth spin-off and overall sixth television series in The Walking Dead franchise, sharing continuity with the other series, and set after the conclusion of the original The Walking Dead television series.

Norman Reedus reprises his role as Daryl Dixon from the original television series, alongside Clémence Poésy, Louis Puech Scigliuzzi, Laïka Blanc-Francard, Anne Charrier, Romain Levi and Adam Nagaitis playing new characters. Development of the series began in September 2020. It was originally set to feature the character of Carol Peletier, but she was written off due to logistical issues involving the actress Melissa McBride, so the focus of the series shifted to Daryl. However, it was reported in June 2023 that McBride will appear in the show as her character in some capacity. The title of the series was announced in October 2022. Filming began in Paris that month, with additional casting taking place starting in November.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon premiered on September 10, 2023, and will consist of six episodes. In July 2023, ahead of the first season's release, the series was renewed for a second season.

As he makes the journey, though, the connections he forms along the way complicate his ultimate plan.

Daryl Dixon washes ashore on the coast of France. After scavenging for supplies, he encounters a walker variant that burns his skin when it touches him. He comes upon a pair of civilians, Maribelle and her grandfather Guillaume. A pair of soldiers, part of the guerriers, arrive and, after Daryl helps kill them, Maribelle and Guillaume betray him and steal his supplies, until they are scared off by a woman named Isabelle. Isabelle, a nun, takes Daryl back to her convent and helps him recuperate, explaining that the walker he encountered is known as a brúlant. The other nuns are wary of Daryl, seeing him as godless, but Isabelle insists he may be 'the messenger.' Daryl also meets a highly intelligent teenage boy, Laurent. As Daryl prepares to leave, Isabelle begs him to take Laurent north to the Union of Hope, believing Laurent is a messiah who will help restore the human race; Daryl refuses. Meanwhile, a group of soldiers led by Codron, in search of Daryl, come across Maribelle and Guillaume. When they mention seeing him, Codron kills Guillaume and forces Maribelle to take them back to her camp, where they find clues leading them back to the convent. The nuns deny knowing Daryl, and when Codron prepares to take Laurent with him, Daryl returns and helps the nuns kill Codron's men; however, Codron escapes and many of the nuns are killed, including the Mother Superior. Daryl agrees to escort Laurent, with Isabelle's assistance. In Le Havre port, a group led by a woman named Genet is searching for Daryl, who seemingly started a mutiny and destroyed scientific research before escaping overboard.

Production

Development

The series was announced in September 2020 by Angela Kang and Scott M. Gimple. Reedus and McBride signed on to reprise their respective roles from the television series.[11]

In April 2022, McBride exited the series due to logistical reasons as the show was set to film in mid-2022 in Europe and it wasn't possible for McBride to be with the show with this setup. The series was reworked as a sole Daryl project.[12] Days later, Kang had left the role of showrunner and was replaced by David Zabel. The deal had reportedly been sealed in recent weeks before McBride's exit from the show.[13] In October, the series was given the title Daryl Dixon.[14] In January 2023, it was announced that the series would be titled The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon and premiere later in 2023.[15] In July 2023, ahead of the first season's release, the series was renewed for a second season.[16]

Writing

In September 2020, Kang was hired as showrunner after she had helmed the final three seasons of The Walking Dead.[11]

In April 2022, Kang had stepped down due to other commitments and Zabel had taken the role, scripts were already being written by this time, but needed to be reworked following McBride's departure.[12] In September, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Reedus explained that the series would be going an opposite direction from the main series having it being a completely different story from what we have already seen with Daryl.[3] The following month, Reedus said that there would be familiar faces from the main series in the spin-off.[17]

Casting

In November 2022, Clémence Poésy and Adam Nagaitis were added to the main cast.[4] In February 2023, Anne Charrier, Eriq Ebanouey, Laïka Blanc-Francard, Romain Levi and Louis Puech Scigliuzzi were announced as additional cast members.[18] Actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan indicated in a tweet in June 2023 that Melissa McBride will return to portray Carol in some capacity.[6]

Filming

Principal photography began on October 24, 2022, in Paris, France.[19] Filming on the second season had begun in Europe, continuing during the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike due to an agreement between AMC and SAG-AFTRA to continue filming on the series.[20]

Release

The series premiered on September 10, 2023 on AMC and AMC+.[21]

Reception

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon has received generally positive reviews from critics, with several calling it the best Walking Dead content in years, although some noted its similarities to The Last of Us television series.[22] On Rotten Tomatoes, it has an approval rating of 78% based on 23 reviews with an average rating of 7/10.[7]

David Opie of Digital Spy gave it a 4/5 rating and called it "The best Walking Dead has been in ages".[23] Chase Hutchinson of Collider gave it a "B" rating and applauded Norman Reedus' "stoic performance" that has a "renewed energy to the character and making the spin-off worth watching" and that the series "focuses more on character and emotion rather than empty spectacle, giving the story a greater sense of depth."[24] Aaron Pruner of TheWrap gave it a positive review and noted Clémence Poésy's "standout performance" and concluded that it "is a surprisingly gorgeous, soul-stirring, and riveting watch. Norman Reedus said they were making art with this show. And you know what? He wasn't lying."[25]
