Tony Kelly (born 1975) is a photographer from Dublin, Ireland.[2]
Career
Born in Ireland,[3] Kelly began work as a photographer straight from school, covering news stories for local newspapers.[citation needed] Reputedly working as "a teenage photojournalist for the Independent News Group",[4] by the age of twenty, he became Independent Newspapers youngest-ever press photographer.[citation needed] Assignments to cover the conflict in Afghanistan[5] for Independent Newspapers and, later, News International shaped Kelly's future approach to photography as a medium of storytelling.[citation needed] In 1996, his photo of a kiss between musicians Bono and Liam Gallagher won him global exposure and prompted a change in his career.[citation needed] After his next Afghanistan trip, Kelly left the newspaper world and Dublin for the United States. As of 2013, he was based in Los Angeles[6] and sold his work to publications like Vanity Fair, Vogue Paris, GQ, L'Officiel and Cosmopolitan.[citation needed]
Books
In 2014, Kelly published his first self-published coffee table book called "Tony's Toys". Blink magazine described it as "groundbreaking" due to its "innovative layout, dimensions, and large-scale images".[7][full citation needed] His second book, "Taken! Entertaining Nudes by Tony Kelly", was released in September 2016 by teNeues. Maxim described it as "the most entertaining photo book you'll ever see" and as a "showcase of some of his strongest - and sexiest - work to date".[8]
Recognition
Kelly has been described by GQ España as "irreverent and provocative",[9] and by PHOTO magazine as "spontaneous and hyper-energetic".[10] PHOTO magazine also said his work "plays with humour and provocation" and that "his flashy style has conquered the world of fashion".[11]
In 2017 Kelly won Clio Awards recognition for his print campaign to advertise the US TV series Claws.[citation needed] He also won the Monaco Influencer Awards (Visual Arts category) in 2019.[citation needed]
