On 7 October 2023, around 70 Hamas militants attacked Kibbutz Be'eri in the Gaza periphery. At least 100 people were killed in the attack, including children and infants.[citation needed] Dozens of homes were also burned down.[2] This incident occurred concurrently with a series of other civilian and military engagements in multiple Israeli communities near the Gaza Strip.
Background
Kibbutz Be'eri is a veteran-established kibbutz located in the Gaza periphery since 1946. The kibbutz had around 250 members before the attack.
Attack
On the morning of October 7, 2023 at 6:30 AM, militants began firing rockets at the kibbutz. Around 70 militants entered the kibbutz on motorcycles and vehicles, killed the security personnel at the entrance and started going from house to house, shooting the residents dead. Many kibbutz residents tried to hide in safe rooms but the militants blew up the safe room doors and killed those inside.[3] The militants kidnapped many residents and took them hostage to the Gaza Strip.[4]
After around 12 hours, IDF forces arrived and killed most of the militants. The kibbutz suffered heavy losses of life and property that left it devastated and shattered.[5][failed verification]
