WikiCup 2023 September newsletter
The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were
- Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
- Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
- Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.
Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.
Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. The sections on Korea and Germany, as I noted earlier, are totally irrelevant, since the last time I checked, neither Korea nor Germany were part of China. This content, when referenced and checked for redundancy, could be merged to Drug policy of South Korea or Drug policy of Germany for extra credit. - @Bai0926 Hmmm, I am not seeing any English sources used? In addition, there are two style issues. First, an article should be in prose format, not bullet point. Second, you use essay-style language like pronoun "we" ("we must"). Please read the linked guidelines. Please also compare your article to an existing article on the topic, such as economic inequality in South Korea or economic inequality in the United States to see what you are expected to write. Possible copyright infringement
I noticed that much of the Lithuanian Territorial Defense Force article looks like a machine translation of Arūnas Bubnys' article "Lietuvos vietinė rinktinė ir nauji bandymai mobilizuoti Lietuvos vyrus 1944 metais" ([17]). The issue is mainly with this edit made by @Cukrakalnis. I have already reported this issue on WP:CPN, but I don't know what to do next? Should we remove this section? Restore the article to its original state before the C edits? I don't want to do this because of my 0RR, and you promised to advise me in similar situations. Also please check if I'm right or maybe I just confused something and it's ok to just translate like that and use it on Wiki. Marcelus (talk) 21:12, 6 October 2023 (UTC)
- @Marcelus @Cukrakalnis Best nice outcome would be for Cukrakalnis to rewrite it, go over their past edits and ensure any similar violations are removed, and do not repeat this. Whether blanking of history is required, CPN experts will decide. I hope no sanctions on anyone will be merited. Note I have not yet reviewed the diff in detail myself, but I did a spotcheck. I notice a sentence "The Lithuanian army is commanded by a reliable Lithuanian officer" is based for example on "The Lithuanian army is led by a reliable Lithuanian officer" (ditto for the rest of that bullet list), but this can be argued to be a quote (it just needs to be put in quotations). I concur the next sentence "in 1944 on January 3-4, councilors considered the draft petition." rendered on wiki as "On 3-4 January 1944, the councilors discussed the draft petition." is problematic, as we now move beyond quoting what some historical figure said. Ditto for the second half of the paragraph, even if we AGF the quote in the middle: wiki has "Next, permission was requested to organize a military unit, which would be called the 1st Lithuanian Division and that would be headed by a senior Lithuanian officer, called the inspector general. The division would be created by mobilization, its task would be to defend the territory of Lithuania from the Bolshevik invasion.", original text has "Next, permission is requested to organize a military unit, which could be called the 1st Lithuanian Division. It would be headed by a senior Lithuanian officer, called the inspector general. The division would be created by mobilization, its task would be to defend the territory of Lithuania from the Bolshevik invasion.". So, note again that I checked just an excerpt, but I think this is a copyvio and I suggest Cukrakalnis rewrites it properly (see Wikipedia:Copying_text_from_other_sources#Can_I_copy_if_I_change_the_text_a_little_bit?). Note that verbatim translation is a copyvio too. If you could list other similarities, it could help us to figure out what needs to be rewitten, but frankly, I think Cukrakalnis should rewrite this first, then ask us to check again, rather than the other way around (note: it is also possible admins at CPN will just blank this). Your article looks like a translation of zh:另類全球化 which already exists at Alter-globalization. The English article can be expanded (I see Chinese is longer), but remember that all content added to Wikipedia in our assignment have to be referenced to reliable sources (much of the Chinese Wikipedia article is unreferenced).
- You should first copy the contents of the existing article on alter-globalization to your sandbox. Then merge it with your transltion. Next, ensure all content is referenced, and in correct English. Your translation has many language problems, starting with the very title Alternative globalization, not Altmondialisme (that's French). Please let me know when you have done so. (It is also ok for you to chose a different topic to translate, perhaps something easier that does not exist on English Wikipedia - an article about Chinese historical monument or figure or such, for example). - @Hayeyong Your translation to Chinese seems to be going well. Please ensure that your article reads good in Chinese, to avoid having your article declined due to problems with weak translation. Please read zh:维基百科:翻譯指引 carefully.
- Regarding the English translation, it seems the the underlying quality of the Chinese article is very poor - much of it is unreferenced or unencyclopedic. As I wrote above, you should select a differnet topic. It will be easier for you to translate some well-referneced short article then try to find references for the vast amounts of unreferenced claims in the Chinese article that then you'd have to merge with the existing English article. You should always double check with me if the topic is acceptable before beginning work on it.

Polish municipal councilors in Kiev 1917
Hi Piotrus, hope all good with you. I'm working a bit on Talk:1917_Kiev_City_Duma_election#full_list_of_elected_members, to have a full list of the members of the 1917 Kiev City Duma. I've entered the list of 120 names from Russian newspaper source [18]. Out of the deputies of the Polish lists, I have 3 out of 5 well identified, but for the other two (deputies 76 and 78 from the reference) I have only arbitrary transliteration from Russian Cyrillic. What could be the correct names of these persons? Any Polish language ref talking about these individuals? - @Soman As I do not read cyryllic, if you give me a Latin transliteration here, I'll see what I can dig up. Dymitr Szarzyński (1875-1963) seems notable (entry in Polish Biographical Dictionary). - Hi Piotrus. Many thanks. The family names I have difficulty to identify is "Dragoshenski" and "Tsetkevich". It seems however that "tsetkevich" could be a typo of Mieczysław Mickiewicz, who would have had the initials "M. K." and seems plausible person to have been the number 1 candidate of the Polish list. - @Soman Tough. Dragoszeński gives me nothing. Dragoszewski as you note yields very little too. Tsetkevich is very weird, I would not even think about connecting him to Mickiewicz. Maybe Czerkiewicz (since Czetkiewicz gives me nothing)? But I am afraid I am drawing blanks for anything associted with Kiev here in my search. - Many thanks Piotrus. I found another contemporary newspaper, giving the name as "M. M. Petkevich", which on one hand matches better Polish family name. There was Kazimierz Pietkiewicz (działacz polityczny) in Kiev at this time - but that doesn't match the initials "M. M." and he was a socialist. I'll see if I can create a wiki article on the party), and the PDF settles that my previous hypothesis on the first deputy would have been Mickiewicz was completely wrong. In regard to the DK archives, the Poznan archive has no copies from July 1917, and the JBC archive (trying different browsers, from different laptops) always comes up as SSL certificate invalid and I can't access. - @Soman Tough. Dragoszeński gives me nothing. Dragoszewski as you note yields very little too. Tsetkevich is very weird, I would not even think about connecting him to Mickiewicz. Maybe Czerkiewicz (since Czetkiewicz gives me nothing)? But I am afraid I am drawing blanks for anything associted with Kiev here in my search. - Hi Piotrus. Many thanks. The family names I have difficulty to identify is "Dragoshenski" and "Tsetkevich". It seems however that "tsetkevich" could be a typo of Mieczysław Mickiewicz, who would have had the initials "M. K." and seems plausible person to have been the number 1 candidate of the Polish list. - @Choisieon Good progress. The structure of your article is pretty good. Please ensure the content is correct in English by using tools like Grammarly and AI. Sentences like "It is a primitive geological topography", "who Simcheong threw his body to open his father's eyes" or "Let's take a quiet step" are just few examples - almost all of your content needs to be proofread carefully. There are numerous other vocabulary issues (rape flower???).
You should summarize the relevant legend (The Tale of Sim Chong) in a section at Understand. Copying the text from Wikipedia is fine. I am a bit surprised The Tale of Sim Chong does not mention Baengnyeongdo, or vice versa. I don't see the connection at Korean Wikipedia, either - you can add it there and in English with references for extra points. Korean Wikipedia article about the island at ko:백령도 says something about unique culture/food related to the North Korean Hwanghae Province, as well as something about the local Lotteria store being famous/unique? This stuff may be of interest to Wikivoyage.

- Not to my knowledge. Grammar is just corrected by volunteers. About copying from Wikipedia to Wikivoyage: It's OK to do with credit to the Wikipedia article in an edit summary that's typed in the "Summary" box below the edit screen, or failing that, with a note on the article's talk page, and in that case, only when it's in keeping with voy:Wikivoyage:Goals and non-goals. -> Based on the professor's feedback, I changed the location from Gwangjin to eastern Seoul and modified the text of the introduction, things to eat, etc. accordingly. Also, as an interesting fact, I found out that Dongdaemun is in Jongno-gu, not Dongdaemun-gu, so I will put a picture of DDP instead of Dongdaemun as the banner picture, and I plan to visit and take pictures sometime this week.

- @Hakaawaii The article has some useful information, but there are some confusing parts that need to be rewritten due to confusing English grammar/vocabulary. Pleae use a spellchecker, and services like Grammarly and AI tools to ensure this can be read in English. The first sentence is "The load in the middle of the Bukhan River. ". What is a "load"? The first sentence should say that "XX is an island located in YY". Please compare to voy:Debudo. Later, the article suddenly talks about "Namiseom Island". Is this the same location as the "Nami Island"? Please be consistent with names (later, there is another strange name, "Naminara Republic"). First sentence of the second paragraph that begins with "In the early days of the construction" is very convoluted and confusing. Why what seems like people names is in quotation marks ("Nosan Lee Eun-sang"), etc.? Who are the "descendants" in the next [paragraph? What is meant by "[3]" and "[8]" (artifacts from copypaste from Wikipedia)? Why is there a subsectionc alled "Read"? Why is there an adjective "Strangely"? Who thinks this is strange?

Few fixes needed: 1) The first line of the article should clarify what is this (a village, town, city...). 2) Sentence "On October 1, 1938, Goseong-myeon was promoted to Goseong-eup." should tell the reader what is 'myeon' and 'eup' in English 3) For the Do section, it would be good to add more (how about festivals? Are there any?. 4) The Dinosaur Expo - is it a festival or is it permanent? The text in 'get in' suggests that is not pernmanent? If so, the description should tell the reader when is this event happening. If not, then content under 'get in' needs fixing. 5) Understand mentions "Hakdong Village, which has a nice old stone wall, is good for walking lightly.", but Hakdong is not mentioned later in the article. 6) Likewise, Understand mentions "Goseong Dinosaur Museum" but such museum is not mentioned later in the article. 7) Understand mentions "Sangjokam Rock", but the Rock is not mentioned in the article, which only mentions Sangjokam Park and Sangjokam Beach. Please be consistent with names in the article, and ensure all items mentioned in 'Understand' are mentioned later in the text with the same name.
