Marta García López (born 9 August 2000)[1][2] is a Spanish professional racing driver who most recently competed in F1 Academy for Prema Racing.[3] She is the 2023 F1 Academy champion with two races to spare. She is a race winner in the W Series and won titles including the CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy and the Trofeo delle Industrie in 2015, the oldest kart race in the world.
Personal life
Marta García López was born in Dénia, Spain on 9 August 2000.
She is not related to fellow Spanish racing driver Belén García.[citation needed]
Career
Marta García started her motorsports career in kart racing, where she won titles including the CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy in 2015 and the Trofeo delle Industrie of 2015, the oldest kart race in the world, which has previously been won by many Formula 1 champions, such as Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel.[4][5][6]
F4 Spanish Championship
In 2016 Garcia made her single-seater debut as a guest driver for Drivex in the second half of the F4 Spanish Championship.[7]
In 2017 she joined MP Motorsport to contest the full F4 Spanish Championship. Her best race result was a fifth place at Circuito de Jerez and she finished the season in ninth overall.[8] She also participated in a single round of the SMP F4 Championship.[6]
Formula One
In 2017, Garcia joined the Renault Sport Academy but was dropped after one season.[5][6][7][9]
W Series
In 2019, she took part in the inaugural W Series, finishing 4th in the championship. She started from pole position and won the race at the Norisring event.[10]
Marta was set to contest the 2020 championship before it was cancelled in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.[11] A 10-event eSports series was held on iRacing in its place, with Garcia taking second place in the championship.[12]
García participated in the 2021 W Series season, driving for the newly formed Puma W Series Team.[13] She initially qualified in 7th place for the opening round of the season at the Red Bull Ring, but retired on lap 12 with when her car developed mechanical problems. Four non-points finishes and only a single podium followed, which left García 12th in the standings at the end of the season.
She returned for the 2022 W Series, racing for the CortDAO W Series Team, and was 6th in the points standings when the series ended early for financial reasons.
In early 2023, W Series announced the series was no longer running.[14]
F1 Academy
On 21 March 2023, Garcia was confirmed to be driving in the newly launched all-female F1 Academy series, for the Prema Racing team.[15]
On 5 May 2023, at Circuit Ricardo Tormo, Garcia qualified in pole position for races one and two; however, she was later judged to have track limit infringements during the first qualifying session and lost pole position for race one.[16]
On 21 October 2023, at the Circuit of the Americas in race one of three of the weekend, Garcia secured the inaugural F1 Academy championship.[17]
Formula Regional European Championship
On 26 October 2023, it was announced Garcia had received a fully funded seat with Prema Racing in the 2024 Formula Regional European Championship.[17]
