The 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup is scheduled to be the 9th edition of the T20 World Cup, a biennial Twenty20 International (T20I) tournament contested by men's national teams and organised by International Cricket Council (ICC). It is scheduled to be hosted by the West Indies and the United States from 4 June to 30 June 2024.[1] It will be the first ICC World Cup tournament to feature matches played in the United States.[2]
20 teams will contest the tournament; England are the defending champions, having won the previous edition in 2022.
Format
The 20 qualifying teams will be divided into four groups of five; the top two teams in each group will advance to the Super 8 round.[1][3] In this stage, the qualifying teams will be split into two groups of four; the top two teams from each group will qualify for the knockout stage, which will consist of two semi-finals and a final.[4]
Host selection
In November 2021, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced that the 2024 Men's T20 World Cup would be played in the West Indies and the United States.[5] A joint bid was submitted by Cricket West Indies and USA Cricket following two years of preparation, forming part of a strategic partnership between the two associations.[6] The ICC's hope is that hosting a major competition for the first time will put the USA on the global cricketing map."[7]
In October 2022, it was reported that the ICC had stripped USA Cricket of its role as administrative co-host of the World Cup due to continued non-compliance with the ICC's financial protocols and concerns being raised over USA Cricket's financial position, including debts of approximately $650,000. This was not expected to impact the playing of matches in the country.[8] By June 2023, there were reports that the World Cup may shift to England; however, these rumors were dismissed by USA Cricket, which stated that the World Cup would still be held in the US, and that a successful staging of the inaugural Major League Cricket season would "ward off a lot of concerns".[9][10]
Teams and qualification
The top eight teams from the 2022 tournament and the two hosts qualified automatically for the tournament. The remaining two automatic qualification places were taken by the best-ranked teams in the ICC Men's T20I Team Rankings which had not already secured a place in the finals, as of 14 November 2022.[11][12]
The eight remaining places will be filled via the ICC's regional qualifiers, comprising two teams from Africa, Asia, and Europe, along with one team each from the Americas and the East Asia-Pacific groups.[13] In May 2022, the ICC confirmed the sub-regional qualification pathways for Europe, East Asia-Pacific, and Africa.[14]
In July 2023, Ireland and Scotland became the first two teams to qualify from the Europe Qualifier followed by Papua New Guinea from the East Asia-Pacific Qualifier.[15][16] Canada secured their qualification in October 2023 after defeating Bermuda in their final match in the Americas Qualifier[17] and in November 2023, Nepal and Oman qualified after reaching the final of the Asia Qualifier.[18] The Africa Qualifier will determine which two teams will finish first and second and will secure the final two spots.

Venues
In April 2023, Cricket West Indies began a bidding process for countries in the region willing to host matches.[19] In July 2023, the ICC shortlisted four venues in the United States: Central Broward Park in Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Church Street Park in Morrisville, North Carolina; Grand Prairie Stadium near Dallas, Texas; and Van Cortlandt Park in New York City.[20] Following protests about the decision to build Van Cortlandt Park the site for the stadium was changed to a temporary stadium at Eisenhower Park in Long Island. Church Street Park did not make the final list of venues in the US.[21][22][23][24][25]
In September 2023, seven venues in the Caribbean were selected to host matches.[26]
