- I would avoid using excerpts, especially for a high visibility article such as Solar power. Also most of the listed articles are way too detailed for this general article. --Ita140188 (talk) 09:57, 7 September 2022 (UTC)
- There are too many proposals here. I have some ideas of merges / drastic shortenings to reduce the overlap among the top-level articles. I think excerpt can work for high-visibility articles, but not excerpts of leads (which are unstable/poorly cited, and written in a style unsuitable for the body of articles). I am moving this content from climate change mitigation. Is any of this useful for this article or is it all already in there? Also, I am still a bit confused what would go here and what would go to solar energy.
Solar energy
- Solar photovoltaics (PV) has become the cheapest way to produce electric energy in many regions of the world, with production costs down to 0.015 US$/KWh in desert regions.[2] The growth of photovoltaics is exponential and has doubled every three years since the 1990s. In the summer, PV power generation follows the daily demand curve.[3]
- A different technology is concentrated solar power (CSP) using mirrors or lenses to concentrate a large area of sunlight onto a receiver. With CSP, the energy can be stored for a few hours, providing supply in the evening. This can outweigh the higher costs compared to PV.
- Solar water heating has doubled between 2010 and 2019. Total installed solar water heating systems provide a capacity of 501 GWth, with 67% of the global share in China.[4] Photovoltaic thermal hybrid solar collectors combine PV and solar heating.

Add a category for the potential for solar power in mobile devices
I have over 12 years of experience on this. https://iotmote.substack.com/p/remaking-the-nokia-6110-and-psion Request to cross Link Shortwave radio Wikipedia article, low power SDR-based microcontrollers with Solar power and mobile phones, as an example of Technological Convergence (also cross link). Remove concentrated solar power
I think we should remove it from the article. It's a rounding error, less than 1% of the total. With current growth rates photovoltaics are adding twice that much, every single month, and that percentage is only going down over time, and dealing with it is taking up valuable space in the article out of all proportion.
If it's only producing 1% of the power, as a starting point for discussion, I think it should only take up 1% of the article, at most.
While I think it's a neat technology, I think we just need to be realistic and relegate it to a top note that directs us to concentrated solar power. GliderMaven (talk) 20:14, 7 September 2023 (UTC)
Cost
