Animal is a 2023 Indian Hindi-language action drama film[5] directed and edited by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, who co-wrote the screenplay with Pranay Reddy Vanga and Saurabh Gupta from the story by himself. The film is produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, Murad Khetani and Pranay Reddy Vanga under T-Series Films, Bhadrakali Pictures and Cine1 Studios. The film stars Ranbir Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Rashmika Mandanna and Tripti Dimri. In the film, Ranvijay "Vijay" Singh learns about an assassination attempt on his father Balbir Singh by Haque and his brothers, where he sets out to exact revenge.

The film was officially announced in January 2021, along with the title of the film. Principal photography commenced in April 2022 and wrapped by April 2023. The film has music composed by JAM8, Vishal Mishra, Jaani, Manan Bhardwaj, Shreyas Puranik, Ashim Kemson and Harshwardhan Rameshwar, cinematography handled by Amit Roy and editing by Sandeep Reddy Vanga. With a runtime of 201 minutes (3 hours 21 minutes), the film was one of the longest Indian films made.[6][7]

Animal was theatrically released on 1 December 2023 in standard and IMAX formats and received mixed reviews from critics, garnered praise towards storytelling, action and acting performance, particularly Ranbir and Deol.[8] Earning around 527.52 crore (US$62 million), Animal has emerged as sixth highest-grossing Indian film of 2023, fourth highest-grossing Hindi film of 2023, 20th highest-grossing Indian film and highest-grossing A (adults only) rated Indian film of all time.

Plot

Ranvijay "Vijay" Singh is the son of Balbir Singh, a Delhi-based business magnate who heads the generational steel company "Swastik Steels corp.". Vijay's family includes Balbir, mother Jyoti, grandfather Rajdheer Singh and sisters Reet and Roop. Vijay has adored Balbir since childhood, but Balbir neglects him and behaves harshly with him due to his busy schedule. When Vijay brings an AK-47 to school and hurts a group of boys who bullied Reet, Balbir sends him away to a boarding school in United States.

Years later, Vijay returns to Delhi after completing his education and attends the engagement of his former school classmate Geetanjali "Geeta" Iyengar, whom he has always loved. Vijay convinces her to break her engagement and choose him. During Balbir's 60th birthday, Vijay fights with Reet's husband Varun and is kicked out of the house, where he moves to the United States after marrying Geeta. Vijay and Geeta lead a happy life and bear two children Abhay "Monu" and Sonu. Eight years later, Vijay learns that Balbir was shot by unidentified assailants, where he promptly returns to India and sets out to find the person responsible for the assassination attempt.

Vijay goes to his native village in Punjab, where he rounds up his cousins to help in his mission. He sets up a doppelgänger for Balbir who is killed by Asrar Haque's men. Later, Vijay discovers that Varun was involved in the assassination attempt, where he kills him at a meeting as Asrar Haque watches the murder. Shortly afterward, Vijay goes to meet an arms dealer Freddy at a hotel, where Asrar Haque and his assailants donning animal masks, arrive at the hotel to kill him. However, Vijay manages to vanquish them despite brutal injuries and goes into a coma.

Two weeks later upon waking from his coma, Vijay learns that he has heart failure and needs an immediate transplant. Vijay finally finds a donor and successfully recovers. He learns that the donor is the fiancé of a woman named Zoya. Vijay meets Zoya and begins to spend time with her in order to ease her pain of losing her fiancé, which leads to an affair. Zoya, who has fallen in love with Vijay, reveals that the donor was not her fiancé and reveals that she was sent by Asrar's mute younger brother Abrar to honey trap him. Vijay learns that Asrar was the actual perpetrator behind Balbir's assassination attempt. Asrar's younger brothers Abid and Abrar discovered everything about Vijay and sent her to him.

Vijay reveals that he had known earlier that she had been sent by someone and that he wanted to know the identity of the actual perpetrator. Later, Vijay learns from his grandfather Rajdheer that Abrar and his brothers are related to their family due to them being the grandsons of Rajdheer's late younger brother Shamsher Singh. Rajdheer had banished Shamsher from the family decades ago, due to the latter's involvement in shady dealings during his time with "Swastik Steels". Shamsher's son, Azim Haque (Asrar, Abid and Abrar's father), returned to India years later to ask for his share of the property, but Balbir refused to fulfill any of his demands. Shamsher torched himself to death soon after, which left Abrar heavily traumatized, rendering him mute. These incidents further served as catalysts for Asrar and his brothers to seek revenge on Balbir.

Vijay learns that Abrar has relocated to Scotland and converted to Islam. Vijay and his cousins barge into his house, where he kills Abrar's men and threatens Abrar's wives to reveal his whereabouts. Abrar's wives reveal that Abrar had escaped with Abid and plans to leave for another country in their private jet F69. Vijay and his men give chase to them on the runway, managing to stop their flight. A brutal fight ensues, where Vijay finally kills Abrar and returns to India. During their Diwali celebration, Balbir reveals to Vijay that he has terminal cancer and realizes that his upbringing is the reason behind Vijay's aggression. Balbir finally apologizes and reconciles with Vijay, who is overjoyed after finally receiving familial love and affection from his father.

In the post-credits scene, Azrar, Abid and Abrar's other younger brother Aziz, a professional assassin in Istanbul, learns that Vijay is responsible for killing Asrar and Abrar. After successfully undergoing plastic surgery to become Vijay's doppelgänger, Aziz and Abid set out to exact vengeance on Vijay and his family.

ETimes reported that Kapoor was "keen" to work on the film, however, will finalize only after hearing the final script, which was still progressing writing.[11]

In June 2020, however, it was reported that Vanga met Kapoor in January and narrated another script, which was reportedly titled Devil.[12] In late December, Anil Kapoor was reported to be part of the cast.[13] On 1 January 2021, the company's made an official public announcement of the venture, revealing also the title of the film and the crew.[14] In late April, Bobby Deol and Parineeti Chopra were cast, with the former playing lead antagonist role, while the latter plays lead actress role.[15]

The film had planned to premiere in North America on 30 November 2023, a day before its release.[35] In the United States, it will be screened in 888 theaters, marking the highest number for a Hindi film, surpassing the screen count of Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva (2022) and Jawan (2023).[36][37]

Reception

Critical response

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 29% of 21 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 4.7/10.[40]

Awarding the film 4.5/5 stars, Bollywood Hungama praised "Ranbir Kapoor’s outstanding performance, clap-worthy massy scenes, and interval block."[41] Sukanya Verma of Rediff gave 4/5 stars and wrote "Animal is relentless as a euphoric medley of feral rage and dance of the dysfunctional. The twists go on well until end credits as more blood is splattered our way."[42] Ganesh Aaglave of Firstpost gave 3.5/5 stars and wrote "Animal is an adrenaline experience which will have polarising views but you can't deny its entertaining quotient, breathtaking performances and storytelling."[43] Puja Awasthi of The Week rated the film 3.5 out of 5 stars and wrote, "Animal for all its blood and gore, is the story of a son’s aching desire for his father’s approval. Why even its ballads are less romance, more revenge. And its female characters for all their luminosity, are just props".[44]

Monika Rawal Kukreja of Hindustan Times found it "an absolute massy, entertaining and extremely violent thriller which doesn't believe in conforming to the norms", while adding that the extreme violence might be off-putting for some.[45] Titas Chowdhury of News18 gave 3.5/5 stars, labelled it "dark, loud and garish but also unapologetic", and thought that Ranbir Kapoor "breathes life into this undesirable character with a lot of charisma and swag".[46] Abhimanyu Mathur of DNA India rated the film 3.5/5 and opined, "Animal takes everything that was problematic and increases it several notches. It is downright the most violent Hindi film I have seen, and also one of the most inherently toxic and misogynist. The amazing part is that it is still very well made and entertaining, enhanced further by yet another great performance from Kapoor".[47]

Conversely, Renuka Vyavahare of The Times of India gave 2.5/5 stars and termed the film "all swag and no substance derailed family drama"; she was critical of "Vanga's take on women or violence" but praised Ranbir "raw sex appeal and unmatched intensity".[48] India Today's Anvita Singh gave 2/5 stars and wrote "Ranbir Kapoor is stellar in problematic, paper-thin film."[49] Nandini Ramnath of Scroll.in wrote, "Ranbir is on fire, inhabiting to a frightening degree Vijay’s delusional personal war. Reptile-eyed even at his smouldering best, Kapoor’s career-best performance makes Animal tough to stomach, but equally difficult to ignore".[50]

In a negative review, Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express expressed disappointment that the performances of Ranbir and Anil Kapoor had been "wasted in this pointless, vile tale".[51] Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV gave 1.5/5 stars and wrote "The sickeningly violent father-son action drama rarely pauses for breath."[52] Sowmya Rajendran of The News Minute gave 1.5/5 stars and wrote "Sandeep Reddy Vanga's movie has the kind of writing you'll find in BDSM erotica like Fifty Shades of Grey, but presented with the same earnestness of 'pure love' that we saw in Arjun Reddy."[53] Phuong Le of The Guardian awarded the film 1/5 stars and said "Animal sinks even further into regressive depths, resulting in one of the vilest protagonists to have graced the big screen."[54]

Box office

Animal had the fourth-biggest advance booking in Hindi cinema, and the third-highest for 2023 after Jawan and Pathaan.[55] On its opening day, the film collected a total India net of 638 million (US$7.5 million).[56] In the United States, the film was released alongside Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé, Silent Night, Godzilla Minus One, and The Shift, and made $6.1 million from 888 theatres in its opening weekend, finishing in seventh place, behind the second weekend totals of Wish and Napoleon.[57] Worldwide, it emerged as the No. 1 film on its opening weekend with $42.1 million, surpassing all the films globally.[58]

Sequel

The film ends with the announcement of sequel titled Animal Park.[59]
