Surya Kumar Yadav (born 14 September 1990) is an Indian international cricketer who represents the Indian cricket team in ODI & T20I Formats. He is the vice-captain of the Indian National Cricket Team in T20I, he is currently leading the team as captain in the ongoing T20I series.[3][4] Yadav has represented India in all three formats of the game. He plays for the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League and serves as the captain for Mumbai in Indian domestic cricket. Commonly termed as Mr. 360 for his playing style, SKY is currently the world no.1 T20I batter in ICC T20I Rankings.
Early and personal life
Yadav was born in Mumbai on the 14th of September, 1990, and was raised there. His parents are from Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh.[5][6] He started playing cricket under the coaching of his uncle, Vinod Kumar Yadav. He learned the game while playing on the streets of Chembur. At the age of 10, his father saw his inclination towards the game and enrolled him in a cricket camp in the BARC colony in Anushakti Nagar. He then went to Elf Vengsarkar Academy,[7] run by former international cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar, and played age-group cricket in Mumbai.[8] He was educated at Pillai College of Arts, Commerce and Science.[9]
In July 2017, Yadav married Devisha Shetty. The couple first met in 2010 at a college program. Shetty is a trained dancer and serves as a dance coach.[10]

Suryakumar Yadav played his club cricket in Mumbai, mostly for Parsi Gymkhana Cricket Club, along with teams including Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited team, Shivaji Park Gymkhana Club and Dadar Union Club.[11][1]
Yadav was one of the senior and regular members of the Mumbai Ranji team, and captained the Mumbai cricket team for brief period in the Ranji trophy. Amid 2014–15 Ranji Trophy season, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) removed him from captaincy and dropped him from the team in 2018-19 season. However, the MCA's selection committee later selected him and appointed him as captain for 2019-20 of the tournament.[12]
Suryakumar Yadav was again appointed the captain of Mumbai team during 2020–21 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.[13][14] In 2021, while playing for Parsi Gymkhana, Yadav scored 249 runs in final match against Payyade Sports Club in 'Police Shield' tournament at the Police Gymkhana ground, Mumbai, winning the "Best Batsman of the Final" award and helping Parsi Gymkhana to win the tournament for the first time since 1956, and became the first club to win historic back-to-back trophies in 3 different format in single season.[11][15]
In October 2018, Yadav was named in India C's squad for the 2018–19 Deodhar Trophy.[16] In October 2019, he was again named in the India C squad for the 2019–20 Deodhar Trophy.[17][14]
After scoring consistently in first-class and domestic cricket, Yadav finally received his First National call-up in February 2021, when he was named In India's T20I squad for 5 five-match T20I Series against England, which took place in March 2021. He has since been a regular feature in the playing XI in the T20 team, and while a string of low scores in 2022 limited the opportunities he got in ODI cricket, he found a place in India's 2023 World Cup squad, playing in the last seven games out of eleven with a top score of 49.
Indian Premier League
He received an IPL contract from Mumbai Indians (MI) for the 2012 season. However, he played just one match in the season and was dismissed without scoring.[18]
In the 2014 IPL auctions, he was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders. He made headlines in IPL 2015 when he hit a match-winning 20 ball 46 runs with five sixes against MI at Eden Gardens. He became the team's vice-captain and played regularly. in 2018 IPL auctions, he was bought by Mumbai Indians for a price of ₹3.2 crore (US$370,000).[19]
After a successful stint with the Mumbai Indians, he was retained by them ahead of the 2022 season mega auction for INR 8 Cr. However, he was ruled out from IPL 2022 due to an injury in his left forearm.[20]
Mumbai Indians retained Yadav for INR 8 Crore in IPL 2023. Being ranked as ICC No.1 T20 batsman and awarded the Men's Cricketer of the Year 2022,[21] he ended up being one of the most valuable players in IPL 2023. After Kieron Pollard's retirement, he was made the Vice Captain of Mumbai Indians in IPL 2023.[22]
He scored his maiden IPL century against Gujarat Titans on 12 May 2023.[23]
International career
In February 2021, he was named in India's Twenty20 International (T20I) squad for their series against England.[24] It was his maiden international call-up to the India cricket team.[25] He made his T20I debut for India on 14 March 2021, against England.[26] He then played the fourth game of the series on 18 March. He got his first opportunity to bat, and hit the first ball he faced in international cricket for a six, becoming the first Indian to do so in T20I Cricket, and went on to score a half-century.[27][28] The next day, he was named in India's One Day International (ODI) squad for their series against England.[29] His game changing performances at No. 3 led him to being described as an "X Factor" player by his captain.[30]
In June 2021, he was named in India's One Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 International (T20I) squads for their series against Sri Lanka.[31] He made his ODI debut on 18 July 2021, for India against Sri Lanka.[32] On 21 July 2021, Yadav scored his maiden ODI fifty against Sri Lanka.[33]
In July 2021, Yadav was called up as a replacement to India's Test squad for their series against England.[34] In September 2021, Yadav was named in India's squad for the 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup.[35] In November, he was added to India's Test squad for their series against New Zealand.[36]
In June 2022, he was named in India's squad for their T20I series against Ireland.[37]
In July 2022, Yadav scored his maiden T20I century against England at Trent Bridge in Nottingham, England scoring 117 off 55 balls.[38] He is only the 5th Indian player to record a century in T20I, and only the 2nd to reach the mark batting 4th or lower.[39] In October 2022, he became the fastest batsman to score 1000 runs in T20I's, reaching the mark in 573 balls against South Africa.[40]
On 30 October 2022, Yadav was ranked first in the ICC T20I rankings for batsmen.[41][42]
On 27 October 2022, Yadav scored the fourth fastest half-century by an Indian batsman at a T20 World Cup, and his first at a T20 World Cup,[43] reaching the mark in 25 balls against Netherlands at Sydney Cricket Ground.[44]
In November 2022, Yadav scored his second T20I century against New Zealand at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui, New Zealand, scoring 111 not out off 51 balls with the help of 11 fours and 7 sixes. He became the second Indian to score two centuries in T20Is in a calendar year and emulated Rohit Sharma's record.[45][46]
In January 2023, Yadav scored the second fastest century by an Indian batter in T20I, the third of his career, reaching the mark in 45 balls against Sri Lanka at Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot, India.[47] He broke KL Rahul's record of second fastest T20I century, who achieved this in 46 balls against West Indies.[47][48] Yadav Yadav also won the ICC T20I Player of the year Award for his brilliant performance in 2022.[49]
On 9 February 2023, he made his Test debut against Australia at Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, Nagpur.[50]
In March 2023, he registered 3 golden ducks in a 3 match ODI series, being the only Indian to do so.
In August 2023, Yadav was again selected for the India tour of West Indies in ODIs and was also selected as the vice-captain for Indian Cricket Team in T20Is.[51] In the 3rd T20i Match, he scored a 83 runs off of 44 balls, helping to win the game.[52]
He is also a part of 2023 Asia Cup winning squad of Team India.
Later he was selected for the Australia tour of India in Odis and also for India's World Cup squad.
In 1st and 2nd One day internationals with Australia, he made two consecutive half centuries.[citation needed]
After India lost the World Cup 2023 Finals, Surya served as interim captain of the T20I series against Australia.[53]
