Plot
Ranvijay "Vijay" Singh Balbir is the son of Balbir Singh, a Delhi-based business magnate who heads the generational steel company, "Swastik Steels". Vijay resides in a palatial mansion with Balbir, his mother Jyoti, and sisters Reet and Roop. Vijay adores Balbir from his childhood, but Balbir does not spend time with the family due to his busy schedule. One day, Reet gets bullied by her collegemates, and Vijay learns about this. He warns them with an AK-47 and chases them. Balbir learns about this and sends him away to a boarding school in the United States. Vijay returns to Delhi after completing his education, where he attends the engagement of his former schoolmate, Geetanjali.
Vijay had always had feelings for her and convinces her that she would be much better off with him as he says he is an alpha male, which leads to Geetanjali instantly falling for Vijay and breaking off her engagement. During Balbir’s 60th birthday, Vijay argues with Reet's husband Varun. One thing leads to another and Vijay is kicked out of the house. He immediately marries Geetanjali and moves to the United States. Geetanjali gives birth to two children and they all lead a peaceful life there. Eight years later, Vijay learns that Balbir was shot by unidentified assailants, prompting him to return to India and meet his father. Upon reuniting with Balbir and the family, Vijay takes charge and sets out to find the person responsible for the attempt on Balbir. Vijay goes to his native village in Punjab, asking for help from his extended family, apologising in the process for his father and his family for not having visited them in the past twenty years. His family accepts his apologies and processes his concerns, sending his cousins with him back to Delhi. Vijay sets up a doppelgänger, Kailash, for his father. Kailash is killed by the gunmen headed by Asrar Haque attempting to assassinate Balbir.
Vijay finds out during Kailash's funeral that Varun was involved in the assassination attempt. Vijay kills Varun in a meeting and goes to meet an arms dealer, Freddy at a hotel, where unknown assailants donning animal masks, headed by Asrar, arrive at the hotel to kill him. Vijay manages to vanquish them and sustains brutal injuries, going into a coma. Upon finally waking up two weeks later, Vijay learns about the severe damage his body has taken, requiring a heart transplant. Vijay finally finds a donor and successfully recovers. He learns that the donor is the fiancé of a woman named Zoya. He meets her and begins to spend time with her to ease her pain of losing her fiancé, leading to an extramarital affair.
Zoya falls in love with Vijay as he pampers her with time and gifts, and reveals that the donor is not her fiancé and that the attempt on Balbir's life was perpetrated by Abrar Haque, Asrar's brother. She tells him that she was sent by Abrar's brother to honey trap Vijay, so that they could kidnap Vijay and replace him with a doppelgänger who would then kill Balbir and his entire family, bearing the face of the man who loves them the most. Vijay reveals that he knew earlier that she was a mole and that he actually wanted to know the identity of the actual perpetrator, telling her that everything he did with her was a lie. Zoya breaks down, and Vijay instructs his band of cousins to let her leave at her will, and provide anything and everything she needs to start a fresh life. Later, Vijay learns from his grandfather, Rajdheer Singh, that Abrar and his brothers are their family; they are grandsons of Rajdheer's younger brother, making Vijay their cousin. Abrar planned the attempt on Balbir's life to avenge his father, who was denied a share of their property. Vijay and his cousins barge into Abrar's house in Scotland to kill him. He kills Abrar's men, and threatens Abrar's wives, to reveal his whereabouts. They initially deny knowledge, but when Vijay places his gun on the youngest wife's pregnant belly, not flinching even as he sees her water breaking, they reveal that Abrar had escaped with his brother Abid, and plans to leave for another country in their private jet.
Vijay and his men give chase to Abrar and Abid on the runway, managing to stop their flight. Vijay and Abrar engage in a brutal fistfight lasting over two hours. Vijay finally kills Abrar and returns to India. During their Diwali celebration, Balbir reveals to Vijay that he has terminal cancer. In a heart to heart conversation, Balbir realizes his failures as a father and finally apologizes to Vijay, and the two reconcile. Vijay then mourns his father's cancer diagnosis but finds joy and solace in the love of his own son, Abhay, while Geetanjali decides to leave him.
In the mid-credits scene, Aziz (another one of Abrar's younger brothers) is revealed to have successfully become Vijay's doppelgänger as planned. Zoya is now pregnant, though it is unknown if the father is Aziz or Vijay. Aziz kills two of Vijay's cousins and sets out with Abid to exact vengeance on Vijay and his family.

Reception
Critical response
On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 30% of 23 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 4.4/10.[42]
Awarding the film 4.5/5 stars, Bollywood Hungama praised "Ranbir Kapoor’s outstanding performance, clap-worthy massy scenes, and interval block."[43] Sukanya Verma of Rediff gave 4/5 stars and wrote "Animal is relentless as a euphoric medley of feral rage and dance of the dysfunctional. The twists go on well until end credits as more blood is splattered our way."[44] Ganesh Aaglave of Firstpost gave 3.5/5 stars and wrote "Animal is an adrenaline experience which will have polarising views but you can't deny its entertaining quotient, breathtaking performances and storytelling."[45] Puja Awasthi of The Week rated the film 3.5 out of 5 stars and wrote, "Animal for all its blood and gore, is the story of a son’s aching desire for his father’s approval. Why even its ballads are less romance, more revenge. And its female characters for all their luminosity, are just props".[46]
Monika Rawal Kukreja of Hindustan Times found it "an absolute massy, entertaining and extremely violent thriller which doesn't believe in conforming to the norms", while adding that the extreme violence might be off-putting for some.[47] Titas Chowdhury of News18 gave 3.5/5 stars, labelled it "dark, loud and garish but also unapologetic", and thought that Ranbir Kapoor "breathes life into this undesirable character with a lot of charisma and swag".[48] Abhimanyu Mathur of DNA India rated the film 3.5/5 and opined, "Animal takes everything that was problematic and increases it several notches. It is downright the most violent Hindi film I have seen, and also one of the most inherently toxic and misogynist. The amazing part is that it is still very well made and entertaining, enhanced further by yet another great performance from Kapoor".[49]
Conversely, Renuka Vyavahare of The Times of India gave 2.5/5 stars and termed the film "all swag and no substance derailed family drama"; she was critical of "Vanga's take on women or violence" but praised Ranbir "raw sex appeal and unmatched intensity".[50] India Today's Anvita Singh gave 2/5 stars and wrote "Ranbir Kapoor is stellar in problematic, paper-thin film."[51] Nandini Ramnath of Scroll.in wrote, "Ranbir is on fire, inhabiting to a frightening degree Vijay’s delusional personal war. Reptile-eyed even at his smouldering best, Kapoor’s career-best performance makes Animal tough to stomach, but equally difficult to ignore".[52]
In a negative review, Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express expressed disappointment that the performances of Ranbir and Anil Kapoor had been "wasted in this pointless, vile tale".[53] Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV gave 1.5/5 stars and wrote "The sickeningly violent father-son action drama rarely pauses for breath."[54] Sowmya Rajendran of The News Minute gave 1.5/5 stars and wrote "Sandeep Reddy Vanga's movie has the kind of writing you'll find in BDSM erotica like Fifty Shades of Grey, but presented with the same earnestness of 'pure love' that we saw in Arjun Reddy."[55] Phuong Le of The Guardian awarded the film 1/5 stars and said "Animal sinks even further into regressive depths, resulting in one of the vilest protagonists to have graced the big screen."[56]
Box office
Animal had the fourth-biggest advance booking in Hindi cinema, and the third-highest for 2023 after Jawan and Pathaan.[57] On its opening day, the film collected a total India net of ₹638 million (US$7.5 million).[58] In the United States, the film was released alongside Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé, Silent Night, Godzilla Minus One, and The Shift, and made $6.1 million from 888 theatres in its opening weekend, finishing in seventh place, behind the second weekend totals of Wish and Napoleon.[59] Worldwide, it emerged as the No. 1 film on its opening weekend with $42.1 million, surpassing all the films globally.[60]
Sequel
Shortly after the film's release, Vanga confirmed his plans to make a sequel titled Animal Park.[61]
