Two anatomy issues

I wish that someone knowledgeable (backed up by reliable sources, of course) would clarify these two points:

  1. The germ grows into a new plant, and the endosperm feeds the germ. So what is the biological function of the bran? Is it just structural?
  2. According to this article, the bran consists of the aleurone and pericarp. But the Aleurone article suggests that aleurone is the outermost layer of the endosperm. Is aleurone in both endosperm and bran, or what?
