Francis Aldrich Libiran (born December 8, 1973) is a Filipino fashion designer and creative director of his eponymous brand known for his haute couture collections and creations in the Philippines. His signature works include art deco ensembles,[1][2] wearable architecture,[3][4] and embellished gowns with intricate beadwork.[5][6][7]
Hailed as the Philippine "designer to the stars" by several media outlets,[8][9][10] Libiran's works have been featured in several international fashion shows, weddings, galas, and pageants throughout the decades.[11][12] Some of his most notable pieces include the winning gowns of Miss World 2013 Megan Young and Miss International 2016 Kylie Verzosa,[13][14] the wedding dresses of Pauleen Luna and Hidilyn Diaz,[15][16] and the official barong parade uniforms of the Philippine athletes at the 2019 and 2021 Southeast Asian Games.[17][18] He headlined the Canada Philippine Fashion Week 2013 in Toronto, Canada and became the sole Filipino representative at the Sakura Collection 2013 in Tokyo, Japan.[19][20] He has since established a fashion house in Quezon City and a retail store in Makati City, among other ventures.[21]
Libiran married American businessman Christian Mark Jacobs in 2017, drawing support from advocates of same-sex marriage in the Philippines.[22][23] For his work, he was awarded as the Metrowear Icon 2013 by Metro Magazine for his contributions on promoting Philippine fashion globally.[24]
Life and career
1973–1997: Early life and education
Francis Aldrich Libiran was born on December 8, 1973,[25][26] to Francisco Libiran and Rebecca Libiran (née Ramos).[21] Libiran is one of six children and came from a conservative Christian family living in Ayala Alabang, Muntinlupa.[21] His maternal grandmother worked as a leather bag and furniture designer.[27] At the age of eight, Libiran discreetly gained interest in sketching long dresses and wedding gowns at the back of his notebook, picturing Hollywood artists wearing his creations.[26]
While his siblings pursued medical and allied professions, Libiran studied architecture at the University of Santo Tomas.[21][27] Two years after attaining his license degree, he took a course in Fashion Design at the Fashion Institute of the Philippines.[27] At age 20, after his father noticed the absence of Libiran's then-girlfriend for two years, he came out to his parents as gay.[21]
1998-2010: Njork to Francis Libiran™
With PHP 50,000 on hand, the money he saved from working as a draftsman in an architectural firm in Makati, Libiran launched his fashion business Njork at Scout Fernandez, Quezon City with business partners Arsi Baltazar and Miguel Leyva, renting the space from his grandmother.[21] Initially focusing on bespoke suits and polos, he was commissioned by his first three clients to make prom gowns.[21] He made a tri-color ruched gown in layers of chiffon costing PHP 10,000 each, eventually handing them over for a lesser price of PHP 3,000 per piece and charging it to experience.[21] On the same month, he produced his first wedding gown for one of his neighbors and cried during their ceremony, cementing his shift to focus on designing wedding dresses.[21][28] Through word-of-mouth, Libiran gained attention among the elite, specifically plus-size clients who were rejected by top designers with only model sizes.[21]
By 2005, Leyva had migrated to the United States permanently.[21] Libiran suggested to Baltazar a change on their company branding, renaming Njork into Francis Libiran™.[27][28] The revamp included upgrades to their office, showroom, logo, packaging, and services.[27]
Actress Kim Chiu approached Libiran to make three custom gowns for her debut celebration on April 26, 2008.[29] Aired on ABS-CBN the following month as the special feature "My Girl Turns 18", Libiran received praise for the gowns, specifically Chiu's pink ballgown with an embellished top for her grand entrance.[30]
2011-2016: America's Next Top Model, Miss World, and expansion
In 2011, producer Michael Carandang tasked Libiran to produce 12 couture gowns made of Hello Kitty merchandise for the 18th cycle of The CW's America's Next Top Model after having previously worked with Filipino designers Michael Cinco and Oliver Tolentino.[31] The ensembles took three months to assemble, challenging Libiran as the actual products were only shipped by Sanrio after his designs were approved. Aside the collection, Libiran collaborated with actress/host Anne Curtis and photographer Mark Nicdao for his featurette in the program.[32] The episode featuring the set pieces originally aired on April 25, 2012 to unanimous acclaim from the Philippine media.[33]
