WikiCup 2023 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! A number of other such instances are reported here. You need to reword all of them.

You can cite one of the sources listed there as a justification for using that name in English. Please make sure to add the Chinese term to the article (see how it is done for example at Anti-bourgeois liberalization). After that, add WP:CATEGORIES (check which ones are used in the Chinese article and try to find similar ones in English) and interwiki link to connect your translation to the English article by using the "add interlanguage links" button on the right of the wiki screen.

Thank you, @Piotrus. I find myself having quite a bit to say regarding the draft:

I concur with Piotrus that we have to find an official or conventional translation of the phrase. When there is no official translation, we seek the most common occurrence in the English language. According to this principle, I recommend No haste, be patient. The Taipei Times uses it ([14], [15]), a Harvard paper draft uses it ([16]), and another paper uses it ([17]). Other translations I found include

"patience without haste" (see this EU report [18])
A contextual translation is "restraining hasty investment [in China]" (see this paper? [19] from National Dong Hwa University)
"restrain haste and exercise patience" (see this discussion paper from the University of Tokyo [20])

Because there exist so many different translations of the phrase, I recommend that Jiang should add a section right after the lede that explains the different translations of the phrase in English.
Forgive me for being strict, but we need to have a clear vision about the content of the article. Right now, I think the Chinese article of 戒急用忍 is named inappropriately: it uses the phrase as the title, but it focuses on Lee's policy which is named after the phrase. I recommend that the article be focused on the policy itself, which it is already. Then the article should be retitled to something like "No haste, be patient" policy, and the first sentence of the lede should read

The "No haste, be patient" policy (Chinese: ...) is a policy proposed by Lee Teng-hui on 14 September 1996 regarding ...

(the alternate option is that you can focus your article on the phrase. Then the article needs to focus on the history of the phrase, and it would need to be titled to No haste, be patient. But then you need to really look into the history of the phrase, which is extra work.)

From my understanding this article is be about Lee Teng-hui's policy, not the phrase, so I recommend the first option.

I don't see the importance of including an "apocryphal story" of the origin of the phrase in the article. Wikipedia is not a place for apocryphal stories. Furthermore, one of the sources in that section is from "Baidu Zhidao", which is user-generated and should not be regarded as a reliable source. Chinese Wikipedia, unfortunately, has a penchance of gathering hearsays and opinions, but that's another story...
Lastly, please check on and wikilinks. The principle is that "Generally, a link should appear only once in an article" by MOS:LINKONCE, so you need to remove some links to Chen Shui-bian.

Please note, however, that you should translate only good content. ko:생리적 미숙 may be declined because while it may be a faithful translation of the English article at Physiological prematurity, the English article is very poor (it is unreferenced). Per our syllabus and Wikipedia rules (WP:V), only referenced content should be added (or translated).

To answer your previous question

Actually I have just one article on my mind which has 13 language versions (Milene Domingues) so just needs two more to be qualiffied for next 2024 ranking of biographies. Would it be possible to your students translate it very right into ZHwiki and later into KOwiki? If they would be able to do it say week before 31 December 2023 (probably next update of pantheon.worlrd) then I would be happy. All the best for you and your students!
