Tekken 8 (Japanese: 鉄拳8) is an upcoming fighting game co-developed by Bandai Namco Studios and Arika and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment.[1] The eighth main and tenth overall installment in the Tekken series, the game is set to be released on January 26, 2024 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows.

Gameplay

According to director Katsuhiro Harada, the gameplay in Tekken 8 will focus on aggressivity, rewarding players, who are proactive as opposed to those who are defensive. In addition, Tekken 8 is set to introduce a new gameplay system, named "Heat". The Heat State grants not only chip damage and additional movesets, but also changes the properties of some characters' moves, such as a heavy guard break. These fighters may also dash cancel their designated moves into the Heat State. The Heat State's timer can be stopped if fighters' movesets are being used.[1] When guarding against a normal state's heavy attack, or Heat State characters, fighters will receive a chip damage that enables health bar regeneration. However, unlike the Tag mode-only health bar regeneration system from Tekken Tag Tournament games, fighters' recoverable health can only be recovered by attacking the opponent.[1] Furthermore, the Rage system from the preceding Tekken entry returns to Tekken 8, albeit with noteworthy changes. For instance, the Rage Drive has been separated and reworked as "Heat Smash", a "Heat" system move.

Tekken 7's "Screw" damage property was planned for return, but it was ultimately scrapped. The property was replaced with a juggle combo extender system dunned "Tornado". This system puts opponents into a ground-bound-like state upon falling to the ground quickly. This is similar to Tekken 6, and it applies regardless of if the combo extender is a launcher or a knockback.

In addition to technical changes, Tekken 8 has many other differences. For example, Tekken 8 aims to provide a more cinematic fighting environment; there will be a focus on stage destructions, as well as characters' reactions to these.[2] Moreover, rather than recycling content from past entries, all character models and voice lines are completely new. Tekken 8 will be powered by the next-generation Unreal Engine 5, making it the very first major fighting game to utilize this engine.

The online mode features a battle lobby known as "Arcade Quest", which covers arcade environments, regular online battles, and tournament matches. Arcade Quest allows users to customize avatars and will use a "Fight Money" currency.[3]

Premise

Set six months after the events of Tekken 7, the game will focus on the final confrontation between father and son Kazuya Mishima and Jin Kazama, the latter of whom wants to kill the former to end the chaos from their lineage.[2][4]

Characters

There are a total of 32 playable characters (including 1 palette swap and 1 Heat transformation exclusive form) announced for the base roster of the game. Currently, the first season of DLC pass will have four characters.[3]

New characters

  • Azucena Milagros Ortiz Castillo: A fearless happy-go-lucky Peruvian mixed martial artist and daughter of a coffee company owner.
  • Jack-8: The latest and upgraded Jack model, with a new voice and look.
  • Reina: A purple-clad Japanese teenager who studies at Mishima Polytechnic. She has mysterious connections to the Mishima clan, and practices Mishima Style Karate, in addition to Taidō.
  • Victor Chevalier: A legendary war veteran Admiral and United Nations super spy from a royal French knight lineage, and the founding grandmaster of Raven Unit with the codename of "Phantom Raven" but he chooses not to use it. He is a close quarters battler who wields both knife and karambit for his default combat, and a technology which grants him a teleportation ability, and enhances his weaponized pistol, grenades and sheathed katana.

Development

The teaser for a new mainline entry in the series was shown during Tekken 7's tournament at EVO 2022, before being formally announced on September 13, 2022, during Sony's State of Play presentation.[4] It is set for release on the PlayStation 5, Windows through Steam, and Xbox Series X/S platforms. As a continuation from the seventh mainline game, it will focus on a conclusion of Kazuya and Jin's enmity.[5] It was announced after Tekken World Cup 2022 finals that Arika will be handling the game's continued development aside from rollback netcode, including for the recent patch of Tekken 7.[1]

Bandai Namco announced its plan to conduct a closed network test in July 2023. The test aimed to assess various game aspects, including balance, matchmaking, and overall stability before its official release. This closed network test was made available to a limited number of players on a first-come, first-served basis.[6] A second network test was later conducted in October 2023.[7]

Bandai Namco released a demo of Tekken 8 on December 14, 2023 for the PlayStation 5, and December 21, 2023 for the Xbox Series X/S and Windows. It includes Chapter 1 of the Story Mode and Arcade Quest, Super Ghost Battle, Versus Mode, and Gallery. Four characters and three stages are available for selection. Additionally, Yohei Shimbori, who formerly work for Koei Tecmo's Team Ninja on most Dead or Alive series games was revealed to have join Bandai Namco as one of its co-producer and assistant manager.[8]

Controversy

Advocates for accessibility have reported that Tekken 8's options for colorblind or disabled audiences could result in moderate to severe health issues including vertigo and migraines. In a statement to Eurogamer, Harada responded to this report by saying "I have not 'misunderstood the accessibility options we are trying, or have only seen the video without actually trying them out in the demo play'. I understand very well, and have tried them in demo play. I'm trying to help you avoid harming players and provide a good experience."[9]

Music

The game's theme song "Mastery" will be performed by The Last Rockstars.[10]
