The National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) is the Indian regulatory body for allied and healthcare professionals (AHP).[1] It covers all AHP who were not covered under National Medical Commission, Dental Council of India, Indian Nursing Council, Pharmacy Council of India etc till 2021 and groups all into ten categories with power to regulate education and professionals of all ten categories.[2]

Activities since introduction

Physiotherapy

On January 4th of 2024, the commission made the first draft curriculum, rules, and regulations for Physiotherapy available to the public through a circular from the Interim Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (ICAHP).

Changes regarding Physiotherapy in India

  1. The new draft curriculum mandates a medical entrance exam called NEET (National Eligibility Entrance Test).
  2. New institutions must be named 'College of Physiotherapy' and shall be in an NMC certified Medical College.
  3. Old institutions must after the notification of said regulations, establish a new building within the premises of an NMC certified Medical College, the area of which shall be not less than 35000 square feet and should consist all specialties and their departments.
  4. The duration of BPT (Undergraduate course) shall be of 5 years (including 1 year of mandatory rotatory clinical internship).
  5. Complete autonomy regarding diagnosis, investigation, examination, interpretation, prognosis and treatment of illnesses affection functionality of body or in particular, its movement.

The aim of the new Physiotherapy rules and regulations is to prepare a clinically competent, independent practitioner. The curriculum states that it should be the responsibility of the institution to train the students in "almost all" specialties of modern medicine and promote an evidence-based practice among Physiotherapists.
