Jan van Eerd (YAN) is a Dutch producer and musician. He studied vibraphone and percussion at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague.
Musical career
After completing his studies, Van Eerd began his musical career in 2004 with the band Spinvis as a vibraphonist, where he played for five years.[1][2] In addition to the vibraphone, he also played percussion and created samples for the band. He contributed to the albums 'Nieuwegein aan zee', 'Dagen van gras, Dagen van stro', 'Goochelaars en Geesten', and they played music under the poems of Simon Vinkenoog, which was released on the album 'Ja!'. The formation won the Popprijs in 2006[3]. For the album 'Dagen van Gras, Dagen van Stro', the musicians were awarded a gold record in 2009[4].
In 2009, he performed with Ellen Ten Damme as a vibraphonist and percussionist in the show 'Durf jij?''[5][6][7] which won a Golden Nutcracker.[8] In 2012, he also worked as a percussionist and vibraphonist on the show 'Spitz!', where he met bassist Thijs Lodewijk (Ludowic). They would later collaborate with Wende, both in performance and production..
As YAN, Van Eerd performs with a setup of instruments including vibraphone, synthesizers from the 70s and 80s, marimba, and percussion.[9][10] In 2021, he secured a record deal for this music project with Phillip Glass' label, Orange Mountain Music [11]. Minimalist composer Philip Glass requested the Amsterdam-based musician to rework some Glass compositions.[12] On the album 'Glass by Yan,' he released four original (partly electronic) versions of Glass pieces, including Opening, A Gentleman's Honor, Floe, and Etude no.9.[13]
Producer and composer
Starting in 2008, Van Eerd alternated between roles as a writer, producer, band member, musical director, and musical partner of Wende Snijders[14]. In 2008, Van Eerd and Snijders co-wrote the album 'no.9' [15], for which they received a both a gold record and a gouden harp prize[16]. In 2018, Thijs Lodewijk joined them, and together they produced the album 'Mens' which won an Edison pop award for the best Dutch-language album and for best album. He also co-produced the album 'Het regende zon' (2012) for Ellen ten Damme druing this time.[17]
As a producer, Van Eerd also works on theater, opera, ballet, and musical productions. He has composed and produced music for the Dutch national opera[18] toneelgroep Oostpool,[19][20] Toneelschuur en Het Nationale Theater.[21] Additionally, he created and performed music for theater shows such as 'Hade part one'[22] en 'Minis Plus' of Hadewych Minis[23] which toured at the Parade and played in Carré Minis played the bass guitar, while Van Eerd played the other instruments. They created rhythms together by dancing in flamenco shoes. The music that the duo created for this performance was released in 2013 on the album 'Hadewych Minis.''[24].
He himself co-wrote two theater pieces with Hans Dagelet, whom he knew from Spinvis, including R.I.P, [25], long with the accompanying LP, also titled 'R.I.P',[26][27] and the show 'Stervend Europa'[28] on the work of Ivan Goll.
