Tony Hawk's American Wasteland is a video game that has been released for the PS2, Xbox, Xbox 360, Nintendo GameCube and PC. The game was developed by Neversoft and published by Activision. The PC version of the game was ported/published by Aspyr Media, Inc. Tony Hawk's American Wasteland is the first Tony Hawk game to support Xbox Live; online play was previously limited to the PlayStation 2 and PC.

American Wasteland is the sequel to Tony Hawk's Underground 2, one of the many in the popular Tony Hawk's Series. The game was released on October 18, 2005 for PS2, Xbox, and Nintendo GameCube. It was a launch title (of sorts) for the Xbox 360 and was released simultaneously with the console on November 22, 2005.

The Nintendo DS version of this game, Tony Hawk's American Sk8land, features Wi-Fi capabilities. It is the first third-party DS game to have online support.

Features

Tony Hawk's American Wasteland is the first game in the Tony Hawk franchise that allowed players to play in one large streaming level. In the September 2005 edition of Game Informer Magazine, a map was shown displaying THAW's Los Angeles with an insert of an overhead view of the Boston stage from Tony Hawk's Underground 2 for comparison. The Boston level appeared to be about three quarters the size of one THAW area, with the obvious exceptions of the "Vans Skatepark" and "Casino" areas. In addition, this map also revealed the locations in the game:

Also, the Classic Mode, which allows you to complete a series of goals in certain levels within a two-minute time limit, has returned, with the following levels:

  • Downtown Minneapolis from Tony Hawk's Pro Skater
  • Santa Cruz from Tony Hawk's Underground 2 Remix
  • Mall from Tony Hawk's Pro Skater
  • Chicago from Tony Hawk's Pro Skater
  • Kyoto from Tony Hawk's Underground 2 Remix
  • The Ruins from Tony Hawk's Underground 2 Remix
  • Atlanta from Tony Hawk's Underground 2 Remix (Collector's Edition)
  • Marseilles from Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 (Collector's Edition)

Story Mode

Tony Hawk's American Wasteland takes place in Los Angeles and runs through various other parts close to Los Angeles such as Santa Monica. Wasteland starts out with your skater getting on a bus where you are soon greeted and hugged by an over enthusiastic blond girl, who asks you why you're going to Los Angeles, her reason is to be an actress. She then asks you if your going to L.A. to see family. You say your going to get away from your family. You arrive in Los Angeles, only to be mugged by two skaters who steal your stuff. After you get back to your feet, you meet a girl named Mindy who decides to be friendly and help you out around the city. She tells you to get some new clothes as to not appear like a "country bumpkin" and to get a new hairstyle, your character arrives with just enough money to get what you need.

She later takes you to meet Boone, Murphy, and Useless Dave who are doubtful at first of your skating skills until you have the chance to show off. After you do this, they take you up to meet Iggy who introduces you to the "American Wasteland" which is, at that point, a barren garbage dump with only a few places to skate. You soon are asked to complete somewhat strange requests, such as take a dinosaur head off a building as an attack on protesters. Mindy then realizes that they should use the dinosaur head and that's where the story takes off. You then take various items from around Los Angeles and other areas and bring them to the Wasteland. You meet various pro skaters such as Tony Hawk and Tony Alva whom are supportive of your transforming the area since your skating skills live up beyond their expectations.

At the end of the game, the American Wasteland is complete with various items such as a snake run, a crane, and the world famous Hollywood sign reading "Wasteland" and your skater has the respect of all the pro skaters for creating an amazing place to skate.

Trivia

  • This is the first Tony Hawk game to mention previous titles like Tony Hawk Underground, Tony Hawk Underground 2 and Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3. [citation needed]
  • The character known as Iggy resembles Jay Adams. Some characters' names are references to real people, such as Ben Whofleck (Ben Affleck) and Ashlee Sampson (Ashlee Simpson).
  • Many of the names in the game are in reference to key heads of the punk movement of the 80's; Boone (D. Boone - The Minutemen), Ian (Ian Mackaye - Minor Threat), Iggy (Iggy Pop - The Stooges), Murphy (Emmet Jefferson "Patrick" Murphy III - Dinosaur Jr)
  • In the Oil Rig area, Mega has a pet shark named Fonzi, in reference to the term "jumping the shark." Happy Days introduced the term when Fonzie jumped over a shark.
  • Some of the pro skaters stances are incorrect, such as Tony Alva (Regular), Andrew Reynolds (Regular), Tony Trujillo (Regular), and Ryan Sheckler (Regular).
  • Skate Club and Project Wasteland are references to Fight Club and Project Mayhem in the book and movie Fight Club.
  • The soundtrack cover pays homage to The Clash's album cover for London Calling, which in turn is an homage to a self-titled Elvis Presley album. The American Wasteland Soundtrack cover is a young man smashing a skateboard against the ground, instead of a bass guitar in the London Calling cover.
  • It is the first Tony Hawk game in which you do not have a choice in Gender during Story Mode. You can only play as a male due to the ending scene; however in other modes you may play as a female.
  • In Santa Monica if you look around closely you will find a graffiti tag saying "Santa Monica" in side a cross this is a reference to the Dog Town and Z-boys graffiti which can be seen in the documentary featuring Tony Alva (Dogtown and Z-Boys) also there is another tag saying "locals only" this is another reference to the same documentary there is also a film based on this documentary Lords of Dogtown
  • The man who blows up the downtown entrance is a reference to the movie Falling Down starring Michael Douglas, in which he does the same thing.
  • The game makes many references to Homestar Runner cartoons in the Vans Skatepark. For example if you get electrocuted at the electricity box a message on the screen might say "Your Head Asplode!" Also, if you launch up into the rafters, you might get the message "Arrowed", "MSG'D", "Children'd", or "Late 360 Shove-It to boneless'd"
  • One of Daewon Song's special tricks, the Daewon Chop, shows Daewon going up a quarter pipe and Karate chopping the Neversoft eye.
  • The "Van Zant" last name could possibly be a homage to the former Lynyrd Skynyrd lead singer, Ronnie Van Zant.
  • This also marks the voice acting reunion of Will Friedle and Cree Summer, who previously worked on Batman Beyond as Terry McGinnis and Maxine "Max" Gibson, respectively.
  • Spat the tagger from Tony Hawk's Underground 2 makes an appearance as the guy who tags over the Black Widows' turf.
  • In Santa Monica, in the mission to knock down the stair set, the construction worker talks of a "Donkey Punch Brew House". This is an obscure reference to the video "Donkey Punch Crew", featuring Corey Duffel.
