Nina Cortex (ニーナ コルテックス, Nīna Korutekkusu) is a fictional character in the Crash Bandicoot series of video games. She is Doctor Neo Cortex's niece, with mechanical arms that are used to grab on to things and punch enemies, and apparent goth mannerisms. She was developed for Crash Nitro Kart when it was being developed by Traveller's Tales, and then used in Crash Twinsanity as a playable character. She is also a playable character in Crash Tag Team Racing.
Nina is normally depicted as easily annoyed and has a pessimistic look on life, much like a stereotypical Goth. However, she is depicted quite differently in Crash Bandicoot Purple: Ripto's Rampage, having a childish speaking pattern, referring to herself in the third person, and calling Spyro a "purple puppy".[1] Nevertheless, she doesn't appear to notice the intense grudge Coco holds against her, let alone know that she exists.
Nina Cortex is known to reside in the Academy of Evil, where she was sent to after showing signs of a good heart and having her arms replaced with spring-loaded, steel-trap mechanical arms of death. However, she is occasionally seen with Cortex, so it can be assumed she shares a base of operations with her uncle.
Physical appearance
Nina is somewhat short, with partially spiked dark-blue hair, pale-blue skin, prominent buck teeth, and a metallic lowercase 'N' on her head. In most of her appearances, she is seen wearing a dark-blue sailor fuku, which is apparently the uniform of the Academy of Evil. Another notable feature is her large metallic arms, which have the ability to stretch the certain distances.
In Crash Tag Team Racing, her alternate costume is a pink and white drive-thru uniform, which she earns by getting a job as one of Von Clutch's employees. her robotic hands even changed color.
Appearances in video games
Template:Spoiler Nina made her first appearance in Crash Bandicoot Purple: Ripto's Rampage. She is seen having incredible running prowess, being able to keep up with Polar for a good length of time without showing signs of fatigue.
In Crash Twinsanity, Crash Bandicoot and Neo Cortex go to the Academy to find her so that she can help them save the world. After Cortex finds her she must make her way through the rooftops to get out of the school. During the game she is kidnapped by Crash's evil counterpart, named Evil Crash, in another dimension, but in the end she is able to help defeat the enemy. In contrast to her previous appearance, she does not display much personality, not speaking at all throughout the game (with the exception of a single "Huh?" in the final cutscene).
In Crash Tag Team Racing, Nina Cortex's personality is radically different from her portrayal in Ripto's Rampage. In this game, she is seen attempting to obliterate the Bandicoots with Doctor Cortex and Doctor N. Gin. Also, in the same game, Nina is disliked to the extreme by Coco Bandicoot, who has a rivalry against her. Nina, on the other hand, doesn't appear to hold anything specific against her female opposite. She looks the same way when she appeared in Twinsanity, except her height has changed, making her shorter. At one point in the game, Nina gets a part-time job in order to purchase the Angsterator car, going as far as to practically begging Crash to help her get the job.[2]
Trivia
- She drives three cars in CTTR: Organ Grinder, Angsterator, and Slave Driver.
- Nina was originally to be a playable character in Crash Nitro Kart when it was developed by Traveler's Tales Knutsford, and originally had red hair and wore a lab coat (like Neo Cortex).[1] She was also to be Cortex's daughter instead of his niece. This bit of trivia is referenced in Crash Twinsanity before the Rockslide Rumble level.[3]
- Although her official debut was supposed to be Crash: Twinsanity, after her role in Crash Nitro Kart was dropped, Nina made her first actual appearance in Crash Bandicoot Purple: Ripto's Rampage, much to the developers' surprise.
Voices
- She is voiced by Susan Silo in Crash Twinsanity
- Amy Gross provides her voice in Crash Tag Team Racing.
