Motivation?

What is the motivation for conformal anomalies theoretically?

The article suggests that conformal symmetry is broken by conformal anomalies, but does not attempt to explain why conformal symmetry might be desirable in physical laws, or why experiment might dictate a need to break this paradigm with anomalies.
