Global Smile Foundation (GSF) is a nonprofit organization based in Norwood, Massachusetts, U.S.[1]

The mission of Global Smile Foundation

The mission of Global Smile Foundation (GSF) is to provide comprehensive cleft care for patients in underserved areas throughout the world and to advance the level of cleft care provided globally.

They return to the same locations annually and are thus able to provide individualized follow-up care for their patients and a continuity of care. Their approach enables them to facilitate the best health outcomes for their patients and gives them the opportunity to live full, productive lives without the burdens of cleft.

Comprehensive Cleft Care

Cleft care is more than one or two isolated surgeries; it is a multi-disciplinary treatment protocol that starts before birth and goes into adulthood. A comprehensive, or integrated, approach to care brings together all of the associated specialties:

  • Pre-surgical dental orthopedics
  • Feeding and nutrition counseling
  • Reconstructive surgeries
  • Dental and orthodontic treatment
  • Speech therapy
  • Psychosocial support

Outreach Medical Programs

Global Smile Foundation has active outreach medical program sites in:

  • San Salvador, El Salvador
  • Guayaquil, Ecuador
  • Trujillo, Peru
  • Beirut, Lebanon

History

Global Smile Foundation was founded in 2008 by Usama Hamdan.[2] It gives cleft care, cleft lip and cleft palate, to underserved communities.[3] Hamadan was recognized by the Social Security of Health, Peru in 2022 when they announced that they are establishing a fissured center to treat congenital facial deformities, named after him.[3][4]


In 2012, the Global Smile Foundation established a cleft center in Guayaquil, Ecuador, and Fundacion Global Smile-Ecuador at Leon Becerra Hospital.[5]

By 2014, the Global Smile Foundation was seeing 350 patients with congenital facial deformities and performing surgeries on over two hundred patients during a one-week mission.[6]

In 2015, the Global Smile Foundation surgeons worked with Peruvian surgeons virtually using an augmented reality technology called Proximie to perform a surgery on a cleft lip patient.[7][8]

Global Smile Foundation is active Ecuador, El Salvador, Lebanon,[9] and Peru.[10][11] In Peru, they have assisted more than four thousand children recover their smiles with the help of EsSalud.[3][12][13] In Lebanon, GSF started its work in 2014 by establishing a specialized association.[14] To further develop their work in Lebanon, they entered in a cooperation agreement with the Union of Relief and Development Association Lebanon in order to treat Syrian refugees’ children with cleft lip and palate.[15]

Comprehensive Cleft Care Workshops

The Comprehensive Cleft Care Workshop (CCCW), founded by Global Smile Foundation, is carefully designed to empower cleft care providers around the world to deliver the best patient outcomes in their own communities by offering simulation-based training and education that is led by experts in the cleft and craniofacial fields.

The first Comprehensive Cleft Care Workshop was in 2018 in Beirut, Lebanon. In total, there have been six CCCW conferences with the latest being held in Barcelona, Spain in 2023.
